Everything We Spotted in Blue Beetle's Electrifying New Trailer (Gizmodo)

Jaime Reyes is here to bring a new hero to the DC Universe, but his new movie trailer also has some interesting connections to Blue Beetle's comics past.

The trailer ends with a brief look at what appears to be the inside of Jaime’s eventual base of operations—seemingly taken over from somewhere inside Kord Industries, given that we see the costumes of the two prior Blue Beetles in the background for a moment. Early on in Jamie’s story, and seemingly in the movie as well, the Scarab often manifests the suit of its own volition, and it takes Jaime a while to actually control his newfound abilities. Given the shadow Kord Industries casts over this whole trailer, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing a lot of Ted’s time as the Blue Beetle even if Ted himself is not the star of the show in this movie. Inside the Big Belly Burger box is in fact not a Big Belly Burger—but the alien scarab that bonds with Jaime’s spine, transforming him into the Blue Beetle. Jaime is given a mysterious package to safeguard with his life in an innocuous hamburger box—which in and of itself is a DC Comics reference. While in most of its history Ted has directly led Kord Industries himself, most recently in the comics, and in the Blue Beetle movie, it’s managed by his sister, Victoria.

How the New 'Blue Beetle' Incorporates the Classic DC Hero (The Mary Sue)

While 'Blue Beetle' will focus on the Jaime Reyes iteration of the hero, it will also reference his predecessor, Ted Kord. Here's what we know.

The business Ted created, Kord Industries, will also play a big role in the film, as Victoria is now the CEO of her brother’s business. For reasons unknown, however, the scarab never bonded with Kord as it did with Garrett, and later, Reyes. As seen in the Blue Beetle trailer, Victoria (Susan Sarandon) will be the main villain of the film. In the comics, Ted was the second character to take on the mantle of the Blue Beetle. Meanwhile, a character named Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine) will appear in Blue Beetle Previously, a rumor suggested that Jason Sudeikis would play Ted in the film, but that theory has since been debunked, and there is no evidence of Kord appearing in Blue Beetle.

Why Ted Kord Never Used The Original Blue Beetle's Scarab (CBR)

Although the Blue Beetle seen in the DCU uses an alien scarab that gives him powers, his predecessor had no such advantage.

It would seem that the Blue Beetle movie is using a similar idea based on how horrifying it is when the Scarab bonds with Jaime Reyes. The fact that the item didn't work for Kord to begin with was a later retcon, as it was originally lost in the cave-in that killed Dan. This was later confirmed when it was shown as a weapon used by the alien Reach, who sought to conquer the universe through similar weapons. The first Blue Beetle was Dan Garrett, who was originally called Dan Garret (with one T) in the Golden Age. This was due to his tragic connection to the Blue Beetle legacy, which would go on to define his relationship with the heroes before and after him. [Blue Beetle](https://www.cbr.com/tag/blue-beetle/) has a history going back to the Golden Age of Comics, with the original hero to bear the title being Dan Garrett.

But we’re here to take a deeper dive into the origins of DC’s Blue Beetle and the generational legacy that stretches all the way to the How does that translate to the upcoming Blue Beetle film? In the DC version, it was actually presumed that Ted Kord lost the Scarab early in his crime-fighting career, but the truth is that he actually lost the Scarab on a visit to the Rock of Eternity, the home of the wizard Shazam. Fox Feature Syndicate, a subsidiary of Fox Publishing, went out of business, and Blue Beetle and several other characters were bought by Charlton Comics. Even when magic was used to expose Blue Beetle's communications, Scarab neutralized the effort and kept the power intact. The Scarab armor can also manipulate energy to create protective force fields, energy bubbles, and cocoons to insulate Blue Beetle and his allies from impending attacks. Moreover, Blue Beetle can also manipulate The Bleed's unique characteristics, such as instant teleportation, short-term time travel, and the ability to be in two places simultaneously. As such, Blue Beetle can only enter The Bleed three times in rapid succession before burning out. This allows Blue Beetle to sustain less damage than he ordinarily would on the battlefield.
