“When I’ve told people I am autistic, the response I’ve got most often is something along the lines of ‘Well everyone’s on the spectrum a bit’ – which, although it might be well-intentioned, is a pretty shit response to someone telling you they’re autistic,” she added. I do believe that autism COULD be a ‘gift’ IF the world we lived in was made accessible to neurodiverse people. Since then I’ve been slowly getting comfortable with explaining this to people I know, but I’ve been nervous to say anything on here about it because of how badly misunderstood autism in women is by most people,” she wrote on Instagram.

Autism May Be Linked to Different Perceptions of Movement in ... (Neuroscience News)

At the age of five months, children who are later diagnosed with autism show different activity in the visual cortex when viewing certain types of movement.

“Seeing this difference several years before the symptoms of autism develop is something completely new, and contributes to our understanding of what early development looks like in autism. “Autism cannot currently be diagnosed with good accuracy until around two to three years of age, but we hope that more knowledge about early development will enable us to make these assessments earlier in the future. “We can only guess at the infant’s subjective experience of visual motion. This suggests that the brains of autistic people process visual motion differently from early infancy. Summary: At the age of five months, children who are later diagnosed with autism show different activity in the visual cortex when viewing certain types of movement. However, research shows that autistic people also have a different perception of and reaction to various stimuli.

India needs a national programme on autism (The Hindu)

The overarching need of the hour is to develop a national programme on autism, to link researchers, clinicians, service providers to the end-users in the autism community in India. He is a Visiting Professor of Psychology at Ashoka University, India, and is Principal Research Adviser to the India Autism Center, Kolkata To this end, we recently conducted the first nationwide survey of research, intervention, and training priorities of the autism community in India. To this end, emerging lines of evidence suggest the feasibility of such an approach for both autism identification and intervention in an Indian context. While some of the more widely used tools have been translated and validated locally, recent years have seen a rise in the development of indigenous autism assessment tools. Two pillars for such an approach to succeed are the availability of a suitable non-specialist workforce (e.g. This difference is likely to be driven by a range of sociological factors, such as access to appropriate clinical expertise, the allowance of provisions for inclusion in mainstream schools, as well as availability of medical insurance coverage for autism interventions. Parallel efforts to widen the reach of diagnostic and intervention services through involving non-specialists, similar to a stepped-care model for psychological therapies, is required in order to bridge this chasm. We were looking for available records of the children who came to them, and were eventually given a diagnosis of autism. Instead of relying on existing medical records from hospitals, we translated and validated widely used autism assessment tools — and used these to estimate the prevalence of autism in nearly 12,000 schoolchildren. While biochemical pathways involved in core autism symptoms are unlikely to be different between cultures, there are notable cultural differences in who gets a clinical diagnosis of autism. Interestingly, none of the children who met the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum in our study had a prior clinical diagnosis.

J'can author pens children's book to boost autism awareness (Jamaica Gleaner)

A Jamaica-born author and illustrator of children's books wants more to be done to raise awareness about people living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ...

You are just being asked to show up as a human being and think about if you were on the spectrum or if your child was on the spectrum, what would you want to receive, and I think a lot of the times if we pause to put ourselves in those positions, then we’re better able to do our little bit in our corner, [which] triggers a chain reaction,” she said, adding that the awareness needed to be spread right throughout the year and not only in April. “I feel like teacher training should have a disability component to it - how to prepare their classrooms for someone who is on the spectrum, how to partner with their community - and ... “A couple months ago, I did a book signing ... “There was so much burden, you know. “My first job was in Massachusetts, where I worked with teenage boys that were autistic ... You’re not being asked to get formal education in ASD. There isn’t a nurturing environment that would allow them to understand [their disorder],” she said. It felt so good that I could have provided a space for her to unload because she [turned] to her son and said, ‘This [book] will help your dad and your grandmother to understand you more’,” Lowe said, noting that the challenges also exist at home with family members being out of touch with how to parent and manage children with ASD. Now I saw this lady in November of last year,” Lowe said. “The book was written in a way where I highlight things that you may see or may not see in a person on the spectrum, and with each highlight, I would give an explanation or make room for understanding why a child may behave that way and when you see this, this is what it may mean,” she explained. . I got into the space, and I fell in love with them to the point where I was like a momma bear when I had to take them in public, [but] people did not understand their social norms, and as a result, some persons would be rude,” she said. Some individuals may also overlook or disregard their disorder.
