Following Champions League success in the week, our Gunners have a huge WSL clash against Manchester City.
Little, on the other hand, is more of a doubt for the fixture as the medical team continues to assess her injury. Our spectacular win in the Champions League on Wednesday did take a toll on our squad, as captain Kim Little was forced off after only ten minutes and Katie McCabe was substituted following a collision. As our opponents proved in the away leg, it will be no mean feat to keep them at bay. We travelled up to Manchester for a WSL meeting only a few days later and this time, City had the upper hand. Man City’s win over Chelsea last weekend had huge ramifications for a league table that has been in constant flux for months, as our game-in-hand over City and Manchester United looms. As we enter the final two months of the WSL 22/23 season, every goal, save and performance is vital to keep our title dreams alive.

If fixture congestion is to play a part in the outcome of the title, then City have the advantage. The big news is that Katie McCabe starts at left-back for Arsenal after being on crutches and in a protective boot on Wednesday night but her foot injury was only a bruise. They need a win to draw level on points with league leaders Manchester United, who won their match on Saturday 4-0 at Brighton. Arsenal are not exactly fresh from their Champions League victory over Bayern Munich, with Kim Little and Katie McCabe likely to be joining the long-term injury list. Gareth Taylor’s team play Arsenal on Sunday after the Gunners’ gruelling midweek defeat of Bayern Munich that earned their place in the semi-finals. Jonas Eidevall on Katie McCabe’s recovery and Kim Little’s injury: “Katie made a very quick recovery. And having the – let us say – combative Katie McCabe back is a bonus. Still, this is no occasion to worry about the weather. Of course, there are doubts about whether Blackstenius will actually score on any given occasion, but usually others will step up, and sometimes Foord or Maanum will have a stunner of a game. This is toughgoing for the home team. Charles Antaki writes in: “No Kim Little, and of course, no Miedema or Mead; enough to give any Arsenal fan the collywobbles. Maanum, scorer of such a great goal v Bayern, tries a shot but this one is way off, catching the wind to fly miles behind.

It took until the 62nd minute for the first to arrive and the hosts made the most of it as Frida Maanum poked home from close range after the ball fortuitously fell to her after a spell of pinball inside our box. Often the architect of our fast-paced attacking play, Hasegawa allowed City to keep the ball and was unfortunate to be on the losing side. Kelly continued to cause her former employers problems and, from the left flank, shifted the ball onto her right foot and struck low from range - forcing D'Angelo to spring to her left and palm it away from finding the bottom corner, in what was the last action of the half. [Ellie Roebuck](https://www.mancity.com/players/ellie-roebuck) was quick off her line to smother and avert the danger. And she had her first sight of goal midway through the first half when she collected a pass behind our backline before The England international collected the ball on the right wing and found the head of Shaw, who had expertly lost her marker, with a whipped cross before the 26-year-old directed it into the far corner from close range.

However, Manchester City are not a team to be taken lightly, under any circumstances, and with only the WSL to play for (as Arsenal knocked them out of the Conti Cup and Aston Villa knocked them out of the Vitality FA Cup) they will be VERY hungry for silverware in the WSL. Arsenal climbed to second place in the Women's Super League table with a 2-1 comeback victory against top four rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
A goal to the good, City could have stretched their advantage against a tired-looking Arsenal team who were in midweek Champions League action. Shaw's 16th league goal of the season saw City open the scoring within five minutes at Meadow Park. On a 14-match unbeaten run in the league stretching back to September, City tried desperately to get back into the game with Shaw coming closest to an leveller when she forced a late fingertip save from D'Angelo.
Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw had open the scoring after just a few minutes, but a close-range finish from Frida Maanum and then a late screamer from Katie McCabe turned ...
AM: Frida Maanum - 9/10 - Stepped up the energy big time after half-time. Was much quieter in the second half. Far too quiet after the break and not her best day by a long shot. But she swapped to the wing and played a decisive role overall, including the stunning winner. Should have done better with a late free-kick that was hit straight into the wall. But it was from the resultant corner that McCabe popped up with a contender for goal of the season. Maanum in particular was suddenly alive after the equaliser and it needed a top save from Roebuck to deny the Norwegian a goal to put Arsenal ahead with a fierce strike. The Irish winger collected a short corner on the right, drove inside with the ball and unleashed an unstoppable strike that rifled into the far top corner. The visitors were made to rue those opportunities after the restart. Hemp did hit the target in first half stoppage time after good work by Shaw, seeing it saved by D’Angelo, while Yui Hasegawa only just missed with a screamer. The Arsenal defenders in the box were on their heels. With half an hour gone, City had another chance to extend their lead.

Arsenal face top of the table Manchester United next in what is likely to be a defining game toward the back end of the WSL season. Shaw was isolated in the second-half and Hemp was unable to create anything to help her teammate out. She defended astutely and fired home an absolute rocket to hand the Gunners all three points in the WSL title race.
