Authorities released graphic body camera footage showing the fatal confrontation between police and the shooter at the private religious school.

Surveillance footage shows Hale driving to the school in a Honda Fit and then shooting out the glass of a side door in order to enter the building. Graphic body camera footage released Tuesday shows multiple officers sweeping the school, as an alarm blares and gunshots are heard in the distance. At a vigil, Evelyn's sister cried as she said, "I don't want to be an only child." Hale also shot at responding officers through a second-story window, authorities said. Authorities initially identified Hale as a woman, but later clarified that Hale used he/him pronouns. The attacker, who police identified as 28-year-old Audrey Hale of the Nashville area, was a former student of the school.

We are focused on loving our students, our families, our faculty and staff and beginning the process of healing,” Covenant school said in a statement obtained by CNN affiliate We are grieving tremendous loss and are in shock coming out of the terror that shattered our school and church. At 10:13 a.m., police got a call of an active shooter inside Covenant school and rushed to the scene. We ask for privacy as our community grapples with this terrible tragedy – for our students, parents, faculty and staff,” the statement continued. Video showed the children holding hands and walking in a line out of the school, where there were community members embracing. Police have referred to Hale as the “female shooter” and at an evening press conference added that Hale was transgender. But experience has taught us that we need to be prepared because in this day and time it is the reality of where we are,” Nashville Metropolitan Councilman Russ Pulley told CNN. A search warrant executed at Hale’s home also resulted in the seizure of a sawed-off shotgun, a second shotgun and other evidence, according to police. “I was hoping this day would never ever come here in the city. With six victims, the shooting at Covenant is the deadliest school shooting since the attack in Uvalde, Texas, last May left 21 people dead. Investigators were expected to spend Tuesday processing the scene and gathering more details about what happened during the roughly 14 minutes of terror at the elementary school. The video goes on to show the suspect walking through the hallways, pointing an assault style weapon.

In a search of the shooter’s home, more weapons were recovered, in addition to the ones used in the attack, including a sawed-off shotgun and a second shotgun. On US media outlets, police experts have noted that the response in Nashville stands in stark contrast to police actions during the May 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. There, police say they recovered more weapons, as well as diagrams and other evidence that makes investigators believe the assault was well-planned. Soon after, the woman, who appears to be in communication with staff members inside, notes that "a bunch of kids" are upstairs. The officers then begin jogging down a hall, past a victim on the floor. The two officers have been identified as Rex Engelbert, a four-year veteran of the force, and Michael Collazo, a nine-year veteran. CCTV footage from inside the school depicts what happens next: glass doors shatter in a flurry of gunshots, allowing the heavily armed suspect to enter.
