Chelsea Women: 3 takeaways from deflating 2-0 defeat at ... (The Pride of London)

Behind to two quality first half strikes, Gareth Taylor and Manchester City shook up the WSL title race, leaving the Chelsea Women asking questions again.

With Bright potentially coming back from her knee injury in time for Thursday’s battle with Lyon, the memory of everyone at the club has to be short. Hayes and the rest of the club know that. Being a top side in European football means having to deal with the lack of recovery time. A victory at the Academy Stadium would have put the west London outfit in complete control of the title race. Seven matches remain for Chelsea Women in the 2022/23 WSL campaign. Hayes made just two changes from the mid-week clash in southeast France.

The second half showing could have given us some hope that the Blues would be able to learn from their mistakes of present and past and at least equalize. - Taking James off for Kaneryd, who has yet to show why we invested on her, was a really baffling decision from Emma. Changes were needed and manager Emma Hayes answered in the first half already, taking out Sophie Ingle and Lauren James for Niamh Charles and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd. It would be difficult for Chelsea to recover given the difference in energy levels itself. While Manchester City’s early bad form in the previous season made it so the Women’s Super League championship battle would boil down to Chelsea Women and Arsenal, this has not been the case for the Citizens this season. However Chelsea did get quite close to scoring thanks to Sam Kerr twice, who had a great chance wrongly deemed offside and then mishit her second attempt; followed by Sophie Ingle, forcing a good save from Ellie Roebuck.

A poor clearance from Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger paved the way for the opener in the 21st minute as Hemp found Angeldahl, who made the most of the space afforded to her by picking out the top corner for her first WSL goal. Nine minutes later it was two, Hemp this time applying the finishing touch with a volley lashed into the corner with the outside of her left foot after Chelsea failed to clear a cross. Fine finishes from Filippa Angeldahl and Lauren Hemp in the first half earned a well-deserved 2-0 victory for City as defending champions Chelsea offered little in front of goal.

The England winger wasted no time and arrowed a first-time strike into the corner of the goal to leave Chelsea shell-shocked. However, City defence was strongly marshalled by Houghton and Alex Greenwood as the visitors struggled to break through. Taking a touch, the Swede floated a magnificent strike beyond the keeper and into the top corner to give City the lead. They would be the best chances Chelsea had as City took a grip on the game and forced the visitors back into their own half. Although the blues were excellent in the first half, City didn’t have everything their own way and it was the visitors who had the better of the opening exchanges.
