Why The Whale ends up dehumanising us all (The Guardian)

Brief letters: Not watching The Whale | Rishi Sunak's pool | Morality of greed | Burying Marx and Spencer | Missing newspapers.

We read the paper online, but it means we can’t cut out the Martin Rawson cartoon and stick it on the kitchen wall. Now the wheels really have come off everything. But I was shocked to see the director’s implicit claim that the film “humanises” fat people.

[critic Robin Wood famously argued](https://www.cliffsnotes.com/tutors-problems/Writing/45763344-Film-critic-Robin-Wood-in-a-now-famous-essay-defined-the-true/) that “the true subject of the horror genre is the struggle for recognition of all that our civilization represses and oppresses.” [In a thin-obsessed culture](https://www.vox.com/22697168/body-positivity-image-millennials-gen-z-weight), fatness has become its own kind of monster. As he is dying, he levitates, at last free from the monstrous burden of flesh. Over the course of the film, he gradually degenerates into a disgusting creature nicknamed [Brundlefly](https://villains.fandom.com/wiki/Brundlefly). But the monster itself – fatness – lives on. He’s barely able to stand, and he loses the ability to perform the most basic of tasks, like picking up an object from the floor. These films are designed to gross out viewers, and the protagonist often becomes the monster of the story as their body becomes more and more repulsive. The fatness was the subject and the point. In some scenes, the camera rests on Charlie’s distended gut, his swollen calves or his sweat-soaked clothes, inviting the audience to be repulsed. And although not every transformed body horror character dies, many do. But what I didn’t know was that this film would make me cry.

My review of the film [here](https://awardsradar.com/2022/12/28/film-review-alice-darling-is-a-bold-showcase-for-anna-kendrick/) includes this bit: Paying thrilling homage to his mentor, martial-arts innovator Chang Cheh, Woo delivers both bravura swordplay set pieces and a bloodstained interrogation of the meaning of brotherhood and honor in a world in which loyalty is bought and sold.” The new drama Alice, Darling, puts you right in the midst of a young woman dealing with just such abuse. It’s such a well realized turn, regardless of your experience with this type of abuse, you’ll completely engage with what Kendrick is doing. Plus, my rave out of the Toronto International Film Festival ( [here](https://awardsradar.com/2022/09/15/tiff-film-review-the-whale-is-a-devastating-demand-for-empathy-with-a-career-crowning-performance-from-brendan-fraser/)) includes this bit: It’s the type of movie adults still love to go to see in theaters. So, it was kind of a small-scale delight to find out just how appealing A Man Called Otto turns out to be. Watching The Whale is about as tough an experience as it gets, even for a veteran and fan of Darren Aronofsky. I didn’t have that issue, but it’s a movie that will generate a range of reactions. It truly is the performance of a career, which Aronofsky accentuates at every turn. The Whale pairs well with Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, and The Wrestler, even if it looks very different. A Whale-Oiled Machine - 99% Invisible (99% Invisible)

Even though William Nye was chasing a fad when he got into the whale business, he stumbled upon selling a solution to a problem that would need solving until the end of time. Oil from sperm whales was a particularly good all-temperature lubricant — and sperm whales live everywhere from the equator all the way to the edge of the sea ice in both the Arctic and Antarctic.](https://99percentinvisible.org/app/uploads/2023/03/oil-can.jpg) It’s taken centuries of careful design and development to keep our machines running, from the seafaring age to the digital age. Around the time of the Jost report, Nye’s few remaining employees began tinkering with a new type of lubricant. The 1800s saw a wave of patents for new kinds of lubricant. Through decades of overfishing, New Bedford’s whalers had harpooned themselves in the foot. He sold the refined oil from sperm whales and some other species as a lubricant for timepieces, including chronometers. But in 1865, he found a new way to sell whales to the world. In the 1800’s, whaling transformed New Bedford from a sleepy fishing town into one of the wealthiest cities in the world. In the 1800s, whaling was a vast and brutal industry–sometimes as deadly for the sailors involved as it was for the whales. But the industrial revolution brought an explosion of new kinds of machinery. And the global epicenter of whaling could be found in New Bedford, MA.
