'Everything Everywhere All at Once' Is Big Winner at the Oscars (The New York Times)

The futuristic film from the studio A24 won seven awards, including for best picture, directing and in three of the four acting categories.

The Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund (“Triangle of Sadness”) and the British-born Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) were honored. “Top Gun: Maverick” collected $1.5 billion, and “Avatar: The Way of Water” took in $2.3 billion. In the days leading up to the Oscars, another in a series of rainstorms soaked Los Angeles, so much so that the academy sent an alert to the news media on Wednesday warning that it may “need to clear the carpet at a moment’s notice.” In the end, the weather cooperated, and it was a sunny 63 degrees. [any women](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/12/movies/female-directors-oscars.html) in the best director category. Jordan, the “Creed” star, and Pedro Pascal, who plays the title role in “The Mandalorian,” were prepared to intervene. This year, Sarah Polley (“Women Talking”) was left out even though her film was nominated for best picture. (The most-viewed Oscars telecast was in 1998, when 57.2 million people watched “Titanic” win the trophy for best picture.) Carter also won for “Black Panther” in 2019.) “Never give up.” She was the first Asian woman to receive the award. So did the little-seen art films “Triangle of Sadness,” “Women Talking” and “Tár.” Voters also made room for a musical (“Elvis”) and a memory piece (“The Fabelmans”). [95th Academy Awards](https://www.nytimes.com/news-event/awards-season), they may mark it as the start of a new New Hollywood. Curtis was also in tears by the time she reached the fiery conclusion of her acceptance speech.

In the end, it was an 'Everything Everywhere' night at the Oscars (NPR)

Best picture, best original screenplay, best director, best supporting actor and actress, best actress, and best editing — Everything Everywhere All at Once ...

This was a year in which they didn't try much in terms of change; in fact, the goal seemed to be the most normal Oscars possible. At the same time, it was a reminder that while only a few years ago, Netflix was trying to wedge itself into the Oscars, it's now established a home there. It was perhaps the most utterly traditional choice they could have made in every way except for the fact that it's a film that's not in English. The film perhaps sneaked up on people, but as Oscar night wore on and it started to rake in prizes, including for score, cinematography, production design and international feature, the fondness that Academy voters still have for epic war sequences became perfectly clear. Perhaps it's fitting that Avatar won for visual effects and Top Gun: Maverick for sound — the spectacles won awards that relate, in part, to their status as such. Some montages, a nice In Memoriam segment, an okay monologue, solid musical performances from Lady Gaga and Rihanna among others, and a return to theater seating after last year's cocktail tables and the train station set the year before. That theory might turn out to be right or it might be wrong, but if this year didn't do it, then nominating big movies isn't a solution to the ratings problem as has so often been speculated. [Ke Huy Quan](https://www.npr.org/2023/03/12/1160156811/ke-huy-quan-best-supporting-actor-oscar-everything-everywhere-all-at-once) once found himself shut out of Hollywood after a big start as a child actor in movies like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies. The awards for supporting actor and supporting actress went to two very, very different "newcomers." But it's also part of the Academy's effort to revive interest in the ceremony after years of hearing the theory that the ratings were dropping because blockbusters weren't being nominated. What's perhaps most surprising is how many films that once seemed like strong contenders for major awards wound up getting completely shut out: Tár, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans and Elvis all went home empty-handed. Of the 20 acting nominees across lead and supporting categories, 16 were first-time nominees.

The Oscars 2023 was a less scandalous affair than last year, and was defined by huge wins by crowd-favourite films.

In much of the commentary around the film, moral and aesthetic categories are being confused. The genuine emotion offered and elicited across all four categories were a refreshing rebuttal for an Oscars cynic, that the symbolic power of these awards can be put in service of expanding notions of prestige acting and celebrity. Was it actually the best picture of 2022? And this will excite the kinds of mega-corporations that produce indie cinema these days – they can simply recycle and combine material from their VHS collection. Despite its historical winnings at the Academy Awards, it is hard to say that Everything Everywhere All At Once has successfully managed to make new representations of Asian in the big screen. That said, I liked the simplicity of the setting for the song, the strong backlighting isolating her and her band in the space and making the large stage seem more intimate. Cast mainly by Asian actors and actresses, this strangely (sometimes even disturbingly) funny but also moving comedy won most of the major awards, including Best Leading Actress and Best Director. With his Oscar win for Best Actor for The Whale, Brendan Fraser simply proves something most of us have known all along – he’s a great performer. This is one of the first songs from song-rich Indian cinema to break through to the Oscars, but we can hope that it will pave the way for more. In fact it was a relatively wholesome ceremony, defined by great sweeps for films All Quiet On The Western Front and Everything Everywhere All At Once. I miss the days of the orchestra pit. Red (note the carpet was renamed champagne) got a solid look in with Melissa McCarthy, Anni Strenisko, and Cara Delavinge, who stunned in Elie Saab.

However, the race was still a tossup heading into Sunday’s ceremony, considering All Quiet on the Western Front won the BAFTA, which is often another strong predictor for which film will prevail at the Oscars. What 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' Showed Me About the ... (ChristianityToday.com)

Did Evelyn have anything to show for after a life in the laundromat? Did I as a homeschool mom? Wang Min-li| March 12, 2023.

Their having achieved “nothing” in life is not due to a lack of ability, but because they have decided to relinquish their personal dreams and goals for the sake of another human being. Evelyn’s choice to be Joy’s mother effectively means she has chosen to become “nothing.” Being a nobody is one of the most significant choices Evelyn makes. My choice to be a homeschool mother rests firmly on the unconditional love I have for my children. It is here that I cling on to the hope I have in Jesus. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. But occasionally, in the quiet of the night, I have wondered what my life would have been like if I was not married and if I had not become a mother. As Ecclesiastes 1:14 says: “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” This is the kind of parent that Evelyn slowly grows to become as the film progresses. On the surface, it appears that Evelyn's life has become so busy that she does not have the time and energy to listen to them. As she visits other parallel universes in which she is a successful actress or a skilled teppanyaki chef, she begins to see her current life as the result of a series of bad decisions. As Evelyn’s life reminds me, choosing to serve others by achieving “nothing” in a world that pursues upward mobility requires a deep love and a God-given calling. I enjoyed living with my husband around the world and savored every moment I spent with my children in homeschool.

How did Everything Everywhere All At Once sweep the Oscars? (The Guardian)

A combination of old fashioned star power and zeitgeisty marketing captured Oscar voters (and audiences) across the board.

By the autumn, it was clear the film had a real shot at the gongs, and A24 set about securing them. Such strategies encouraged the idea of a grassroots push for an underdog. But Tuesday was the last day of voting, and in a tight race, every little helps. It looks like a film from the future and relies for its pull on the past. Yeoh joined in too, and last Tuesday screenshotted an article on her personal account explicitly comparing the career prospects for herself and fellow nominee Cate Blanchett, should each of them prove triumphant. [declaring](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrDekTrJ13o) “Everything has led to this” - the campaign leant heavily on the zeitgeisty lingo which also defines its aesthetic. Gradually the film’s clout snowballed along with its box office, as more and more critics - as well as industry insiders - declared their love. It was almost everything, almost everywhere, over the course of almost four hours. “I cannot imagine a better audience and crowd for this movie,” said c0-director Daniel Kwan as they took to the stage to present it. Word of mouth began strongly from a crowd at fever-pitch excitement, on the opening night of their first in-person festival in years. [Everything Everywhere All At Once](https://www.theguardian.com/film/everything-everywhere-all-at-once) took the top prize this year, victory felt an inevitability. The strategy slowly began to shift.

How Everything Everywhere All at Once Won Best Picture (Vulture)

At this point in awards-season history, you don't want to be “The Fabelmans.” The Oscar race is above all an expectations game, and “Everything Everywhere ...

(This was when I knew the film could win.) Once the precursors began in earnest, they pitched a perfect game. In the old days, Best Picture was an award for Best Artistic Achievement. The film was a rare beacon of light during a dark spring for theatrical moviegoing, [breaking A24’s box-office record](https://www.vulture.com/2022/05/everything-everywhere-all-at-once-beat-uncut-gems-a24-box-office-record.html) and inspiring a rabid cult following who saw it over and over and over again. One of the film’s biggest weaknesses was the fact that its fans were, well, a little annoying. The rest of the night was a coronation. The EEAAO campaign proved equally effective at meeting the demands of the day. It was simply too strange not to feel like an underdog, even when it started racking up the nominations befitting a major contender. [To Leslie](https://www.vulture.com/article/andrea-riseborough-to-leslie-oscar-buzz-timeline.html), we’ve spent the past few months debating over the true meaning of “grassroots” campaigns. But there was also the cast, which — Curtis aside — was almost entirely Asian or Asian American, and almost entirely made up of actors who were either unknown The Oscars race is above all an expectations game, and Everything Everywhere benefited all season long from the sense that it was playing with house money. That’s two different Oscar records broken: the most trophies won by a Best Picture winner since the category expanded in 2009, and the most awards a film has ever won in the above-the-line categories. (The film also tied A Streetcar Named Desire and Network as the only films to win three acting trophies.) It was the kind of old-fashioned Oscars sweep I didn’t think we’d see again, to go along with

And so that is a success story very much in itself. I certainly hope so, because I feel safer in a movie theater. Do you think — I mean, all your criticisms aside, the points that you're making aside, do you think that this night does change the way movies get made going forward? But I think that's a shame because that is very — seven Oscars for one movie, and for that movie, to be "Everything Everywhere," is disproportionate. I mean, that is — there's something remarkable about that. What do you make of "Everything Everywhere All at Once" sweeping so much gold last night? It was a big night for indie films overall. But best original song went to Naatu Naatu from the film "RRR." Quan won for best supporting actor. We are all descendants of something and someone. We are all products of our context. He most recently presided over the 2018 event. This is the American dream. Interestingly, Halle Berry has also been invited to present. "They say Hollywood is running out of ideas. At the Oscars, the World War One epic is the bookies' second favourite to take the top prize, followed by The Banshees of Inisherin. At this point, Everything Everywhere All at Once is the clear frontrunner, having won nearly every major precursor it needed to - with the notable exception of Bafta. Thank you so much for welcoming me back." Later in the ceremony, Everywhere All at Once is the favourite to win best picture after success on this year's awards' circuit.

Is It Woke?: 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' (Decider)

There's another layer to the, too, and that's the Daniels saluting the legendary career of Michelle Yeoh, an actor of unusual strength, humor, and dignity.

Everything Everywhere All At Once is about accepting people for who they are and keeping your commitments. Everything Everywhere All At Once is physically, emotionally, and spiritually graceful. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone, is my point. The image of Evelyn wearing a googly eye on her forehead is absurd at first sight but deeply powerful in context. It is unsurprising because their performances were superb, and the Academy Awards is “woke,” like the Super Bowl. The movie is a parade of vibes; sometimes, those vibes don’t always… Yeoh’s Evelyn Wang is a fifty-something woman smothered by responsibilities and disappointments. [The Goonies](https://decider.com/movie/the-goonies/) and [Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom](https://decider.com/movie/indiana-jones-and-the-temple-of-doom/). I’ll bet some folks who cringe at anything they’re told is “woke” probably aren’t interested in watching a movie about a Chinese family and would have preferred one of the movie’s villains, played by the great Jamie Lee Curtis, to have played the lead instead of Michelle Yeoh. The Daniels, as EEAAO’s collaborators are cheekily known, serve up an experience that is the exact opposite of Woody Allen’s joke about two diners complaining about the terrible food and the small portions. I would imagine the anti-woke crowd would also be uncomfortable with the indie blockbuster’s view that queerness is eternal and inevitable and exists in every dimension. It is a movie that asks its audience to sit back, relax, and truly, deeply imagine living life through the eyes of someone different, to embrace another’s unique challenges while celebrating what makes them different from you and vice versa.

“In the cycle of science it remains at the hypothesis stage and needs to become a robust proposition before we can truly understand the consequences.” In the “many-worlds interpretation,” every time an experiment takes place, the universe branches into a number of new realities that contain all the possible outcomes of the experiment. In the film, characters tap into the minds and experiences of other versions of themselves by performing some weird and random action, like eating chapstick or peeing in their pants. In doing so, they take on the abilities of their other selves. The movie’s not just about traveling between universes, though. (Though, Everything Everywhere All At Once is the only one with a parallel universe in which people have hot dog-like fingers, or where people’s consciousnesses are trapped inside rocks with googly eyes.) This theory means that all events could have parallel outcomes in other universes. In it, Evelyn learns early on that—to prevent a multiversal apocalypse—she must connect with different versions of herself from parallel dimensions. Evelyn “verse jumps” into the mind of another Evelyn who works as a sign spinner outside a pizza store, for example, then uses those spinning talents in her own universe to twirl a riot shield and ward off interdimensional attackers.
