In this extract from the official match programme, Manchester United Women forward Rachel Williams looks forward to facing her hometown team Leicester City ...
I always start by wanting to compete for the league – picking up anything individual on the way is a bonus – and I want to win the FA Cup. Every year, I’m like “I want one!” and I remember a couple of times last year I’d missed out to [then Tottenham team-mate] Ashleigh Neville, and rightly so she’s a great player, but when I heard I was up for Goal of the Month I was thinking, ‘could this be when I’m going to get a little blue trophy?!’ I’ve scored a lot of goals over the years but I think the significance of that goal and what it meant to us, the late drama of it all... I kind of shot and spun, and saw it go in as the keeper just stood in the centre of the goal. It got to about 82 minutes and I thought I wasn’t going to get on, but then all of a sudden it was like, “Rach, get ready.” The atmosphere was already tense, you could see everyone was getting a bit stressed as it was getting to 90 minutes. I just remember me and Jon, we were cleaning up in the changing rooms afterwards and we just fell about laughing – we couldn’t believe how it worked!” I’ve won it already with Birmingham [in 2012] and I was at the FA Cup final for both the men and women last year and I just remember thinking, ‘I’m going to be in this final next year’, so it’s a little target I’ve set myself that I want to win it again.

Kristiansen’s absence meant Ricardo Pereira played 90 minutes for City at Southampton, despite Rodgers previously saying the Portuguese’s game-time would have to be managed as he returns from an Achilles rupture. “It looks like he’s twisted his ankle in the challenge with James Ward-Prowse,” Rodgers said of Barnes. We didn’t think it was so bad and then he came on Friday and his ankle had swollen. He struggled through to the interval before being replaced by Dennis Praet. Leicester came out a much stronger side at the start of the second half, and got a goal back just three minutes after the restart. The striker made no mistake to restore the Reds' two-goal advantage and complete her hat-trick. The attack would not end there, however, as Thomas kept the ball in the area and found our no.23, who fired the ball into the back of the net. Meanwhile, United continued to press the opposition half, and made it 2-0 on 36 minutes. United looked totally dominant in the first half, and opened the scoring early on when Russo smashed the ball past Janina Leitzig with 15 minutes on the clock. Moments later, Ella Toone made a darting run into the box, sliding the ball to Galton.

Often picked up space on the left and on the edge of the box and was able to carve out dangerous opportunities. Ona Batlle - Fantastic ball in for Russo to head home for the second goal of the first half. Mary Earps - Quick off her line when she needed to be and was alert to a Leicester free-kick that appeared to be creeping into the top corner.

Leicester trying to attack and pull one back led to them leaving themselves exposed at the back and Garcia proved crucial to exploiting that. Just when Leicester could have tried to push on to get an equaliser, United came back into the game quickly. The United stopper was left rooted to the spot. United had a firm vice grip over the game from quite early on and a flurry of chances in the 15th minute led to Russo finally putting it into the net and finding a way past Janina Leitzig. Toone, while having the ball in midfield, played a perfect through ball to pick out Batlle’s run on the right and the Spaniard hung up a perfect cross for Russo to finish at the back post. United being poor in possession while playing out from the back had led to a couple of half-chances for the Foxes, but Skinner’s side were unharmed.

It was a thankless task as she saw so little of the ball. Moved to the right after a half-time reshuffle of thr back four. The ball was worked from a corner, with Toone’s cross flicked on by Russo and Galton there to sweep home. United had a flurry of chances to extend the lead. Later made full use of his bench with a huge game next week and was rewarded by impact from those substitues. Scored her sixth WSL goal of the season. With the Red Devils constantly looking for overloads on the flanks, the ball was worked well from left to right, with Toone declining an opportunity to shoot on the edge of the box to instead find Ona Batlle with a reverse pass. An inviting Russo volley palmed wide by Leitzig would have been a spectacular way to get her hat-trick, but it still came from the resultant corner. Leicester were quicker out of the blocks when the game restarted and a sluggish United were punished when Siemsen controlled Josie Green’s hopeful through ball, cut inside Le Tissier and guided it past Mary Earps. The Foxes did have a couple of half chances when Hannah Cain lashed wide from a good position and Siemsen threatened to take it round Mary Earps until her angle closed. But as the ball dropped to Russo a second time, the England striker made no mistake to give United their early lead. But second half strikes from Leah Galton and Lucia Garcia either side of Russo’s hat-trick strike ensured it would be a comfortable victory in the end.
