Another game against Chelsea, another hurtful result.Once again, we are left ruing the missed chances, the lack of composure in front of goal.
Winning or losing, at this level, is often a matter of small margins and we don’t look well-equipped enough to consistently make the right choices when it matters, to consistently pick the right options, offensively and defensively. Most importantly, we don’t have someone upfront who is able to bail us out when we need it, like Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema used to do. Not strengthening our attacking unit will probably make the difference between a successful season and a disappointing one, simply because neither one of Caitlin Foord, Katie McCabe or Stina Blackstenius can step up their game enough to palliate for the lack of goals. Perhaps it was intentional, perhaps it was something that Jonas Eidevall prepared but it looked like we couldn’t create anything in that area and it was independent from who was playing there, between Caitlin Foord and Katie McCabe. The Norwegian midfielder is, at the moment, the brightest spark in this team and one of the very few players capable of making things happen. We started well, we could have gone one up very early, we conceded against the run of play and then got punished again while manufacturing the best chances of the second half.

In defence, a back three of Leah Williamson, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Rafaelle Souza has been the preference. The absence of Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema has put a significant dent in Arsenal's title hopes this season. It begins with a match-up in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, and from there on the games keep coming. So far, Charles has been shoehorned in on the right. Hayes and Eidevall have both echoed that sentiment plenty of times. On the left, the Eriksson saga provides more cause for concern. But for all her niftiness, the 23-year-old lacks a certain finesse. Hayes has made that clear through her management of players with more complex injuries. Expect similar shifts in midfield across the next month. Eriksson fills in the most unorthodox role as a makeshift left-back. The back three turns into a four, with Eve Perisset replacing Niamh Charles. Made some brilliant runs to create great chances for her teammates and causing havoc for the Chelsea defence. Really seeing her talent shine through despite being unable to finish, she's one for fans to watch on the front line along with Foord. Blackstenius - Huge opportunity just before the 20 minute mark as she was played clean through, but was unable to keep her shot down. Missed a blinder after great play from Foord and Blackstenius but couldn’t get on the end of Blackstenius’ cross. Maanum - Forced an early save from Berger in the opening few minutes. 7

The Chelsea goalkeeper leaps to palm it away. That feels like the end of Arsenal's chances of creating a tense finish. It wasn't a sparkling performance from the hosts, who were helped by Arsenal's wastefulness. Our rest defence wasn't good in the first half. I thought the game would be won and lost in transitions. "But tactically they carried out everything I asked from them. That was intentional." look at the players out there. We work on that all the time, in the classroom and on the pitch. We knew we had to strengthen for the most important period of the season and we didn't." Foord, Maanum, Blackstenius and McCabe all had chances in the first half but couldn't find the back of the net. It's obvious Arsenal are missing their star strikers Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema, but Swedish international Blackstenius is looking to prove herself in the squad. Made her mark in the game from the get go with a foul on Catley then an assist for Sophie Ingle's goal. Coming back to club football after making her international debut for England in the Arnold Clark Cup, her confidence seethed onto the pitch for Chelsea. Within 10 minutes of the restart, the hosts showed their quality again. They could have been ahead within minutes but for the brilliance of Ann-Katrin Berger, who tipped over a Frida Maanum effort. “Well done to the players, because that is a bit of a slog,” she said.
