It finds that the parties articulated moderately divergent emphases while remaining largely consonant on the contentious economic questions of the period. While insecurity appears likely to contribute to the trend of declining voter turnouts observed in previous elections, the apparent increase in political interest, particularly among young voters, as reflected in the spike in the collection of voters cards ahead of the election might mark a countervailing trend. Nigerians will go to the polls on February 25 to elect a new president and members of the National Assembly.

But on the whole, what INEC has done with making online the accreditation of journalists is one example that the INEC under the Mahmoud Yakubu is serious about getting its act right. Journalists seeking to cover the 2023 Presidential and Governorship Elections were expected to produce several documentations – ID cards, evidence of their work either in the areas of elections or otherwise. And that step would be for INEC to empower journalists on the field to produce reports from their experiences on the field, apart from their regular press reports. Mostly because governance systems within the media is governed by anathema aka beats, the paddy–paddy and hunhunhun, only those in favour of the chap in charge of either the chapel or otherwise will get the nod whether they are fit or not. We have observed over the years that our people are hardly interested in any other processes that precede the elections or those that come after it, except perhaps to participate in riots if a preferred candidate has not won. Yes, voting is one of our responsibilities as stakeholders but certainly not the only one of them.

Second, 2023 will mark the first time in a quarter of a century that the leading candidate in a Nigerian presidential election is not a soldier and the first in two decades in which Muhammadu Buhari will not be on the ballot. This on its own could be challenging for the country and one question to be answered in this election could be whether the country has the imagination and resilience to find pathways beyond these traditional fissures. With underlying insecurity, the promise of the B-VAS as the cure-all solution to election malpractice in Nigeria may be more bluster than believable. Of the soldiers who were on the scene in 1966, Buhari is the last to leave the public stage at the end of nearly six decades of unbroken dominance of Nigeria’s public space. Muhammadu Buhari, a retired two-star general, who is term-limited, will be in May 2023, bringing the curtains down on a long and chequered line of soldiers at the highest levels of politics and state-craft in Nigeria. A six-year-long hiatus ensued at the end of which the country returned eventually to government founded on electoral legitimacy in 1979.

2023 Presidential Election, How the Candidates Stand - (The News)

By Tunji Light Ariyomo This is the second presidential election since 2003 whereby I have played no role. Other than my occasional biased group chats […]

By Saturday this week, the ball shall be in the court of Nigerians. If the presidential election contest was based solely on the merit of preparation or a referendum on the most prepared and the most hardworking, he probably would simply await coronation or be rivaled only by Atiku who share a similar pedigree. Hopefully, by mid-day on Sunday, we should have an idea of who is forming the next government. Yet, it must be said that Dr.Kwankwanso is beloved by a massive talakawa base in the North with a corresponding presence in Sabos across the country. But he knows this is his best chance, especially with a politician of the status of Muhamadu Buhari off the ballot. The man Peter Obi, warts and all, captured the imagination of the ordinary Nigerian better than any other candidate in this election. If he was from Northern Nigeria, he would unlikely be confronting the present level of intense resistance. We have had an extraordinary experience wherein the public speeches of the principal political actors in a government formed by the ruling party, have strongly supported the candidate of the ruling party -whereas their body language and faux pas have been precariously against that candidate. He has polled better with ordinary Nigerians in many parts of Southern Nigeria and the North Central where he currently enjoys fever-pitch support among the mekunus. So, in realistic terms, this is his only chance, his last chance, and his best chance. Other than my occasional biased group chats and Facebook posts, by commission or omission, neither myself nor anyone from my camp was involved for or against any of the candidates in the current election cycle. For instance, how does triggering intense public anger and hatred against the ruling party weeks and days before an election translate to a popular vote for that party? They have simply been removing specks from the candidate’s eyes with fingers smeared with pepper paste!

How the 2023 elections will be conducted - Daily Trust (Daily Trust)

The moment Nigerians and members of the international community have been waiting for, with bated breath, has arrived: the conduct of the 2023 General.

By the same token, for a candidate to emerge victorious in a governorship race, he/she must score the highest votes in such an election and win at least 25 per cent of the votes in two-thirds of the local government areas of the state. At the level of the commission, the conduct of the elections shall be monitored through its Situation Room and Collation Centre. In this capacity, he shall be assisted by a number of national commissioners and other technical staff, who input the results as they are forwarded and presented from the states by the respective Returning Officers. The commission’s social media handles (Website: www.inecnigeria.org; Twitter: @inecnigeria; Facebook: www.facebook.com/inecnigeria) and telephone lines (070-CALL-INEC(0700-2255-4632, etc) are open to Nigerians to send in complaints, which are then responded to, real time, by a team of dedicated and ICT-savvy staff. The results shall be inputted into the result sheets, the Form EC8A and the Form 60E. Apart from the army of staff deployed to conduct the elections, thousands of supervisors will be deployed at the ward, local government and state levels. The remit of these supervisors is to report and escalate, timeously, any untoward event(s) to the Situation Room for further and immediate remedy. The Form EC8A and the list of accredited voters shall further be uploaded on the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV). The fact that the results are transmitted and collated in the full glare of eagle-eyed agents, observers and journalists confers integrity and transparency to the process. What is key is that all the candidates shall be represented by their agents up to the presidential collation stage. Thereafter, the voter shall be verified and authenticated, using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) device. This is one of the largest deployments of men and materials in peace time.

Preparing for elections ought not to be a risky business (Businessday.ng)

Some of the polls have predicted a runoff of the presidential election which has never happened since 1999 when Nigeria...

As Nigerians file out to elect a new president in a couple of days, it is necessary to remind the electorate that a country’s future and destiny are shaped by the choice of the personality they elect. Of importance is the failure to punish perpetrators of violence in the past elections which has sustained a climate of impunity that is visibly seen in 2023. It is strongly believed that the mitigating measures, if any, that INEC has in place would allay the fears of stakeholders and citizens that the elections will take place peacefully without any major hitches. The outcome of results during the elections on February 25, and March 11, 2023 will provide the answers to the question. We need to change this narrative as we prepare for the next elections starting in a couple of day from now. “Among other innovations, the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is expected to improve the transparency of election results and increase public confidence in electoral outcomes in recent elections.” Will the technological innovations to be used in the 2023 elections be the game changer? The implementation of the Naira redesign policy has not done much to inspire the confidence of the people. There are emerging threats to democracy such as rising insecurity, corruption, lack of economic mobility and new digital surveillance technologies which the country must focus on before the forthcoming elections. The INEC boss requested the CBN to address the concerns of the people related to cash withdrawal policy because many of INEC’s service providers have no bank accounts. But many public intellectuals and political pundits have questioned whether the results of such polls irrespective of the methodologies and platforms used in conducting the exercise, can ever truly reflect the will of ordinary Nigerians. But it’s not just voter polls; governments both at national and sub-national levels are not paying closer attention to the feelings of the people. Gabon, Liberia, DR Congo, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Zimbabwe and Nigeria are some of the countries that will have elections at various times during the year.

The default response in the circumstance is for the Nigerian state to call out soldiers, and in fact the military has also been overheard saying that they are ready for Nigeria’s elections. To vote in this election, the Nigerian voter needs a PVC, the only means of voting identification and verification that is recognized by law and the much-acclaimed deus ex machina to Nigeria’s electoral problems called the BVAS – Bio-modal Voter Accreditation System. Nigerians no doubt want to be given the opportunity to make a free choice in the 2023 elections and that they would be given a fair playing ground to do so. Despite the scarcity of the national currency, the CBN says it stands firm by the INEC to ensure that any cash that is required for logistics and other payments is made available to guarantee successful polls. The situation in Nigeria is further compounded, days to the election, by the scarcity of fuel, even if that is easing off. The only rabbit that has not yet been pulled out of the hat is some dubious persons going to court to secure a midnight, black market court injunction as was done in the past, to try to stop the election. One other major positive factor as Nigeria goes to the polls is the confidence with which the electoral umpire, INEC, continues to reassure Nigerians that it is indeed ready for the polls, regardless of whatever challenges may have been thrown up in the course of preparations. In many of these states though, the re-designed old notes have lost both street credibility and legitimacy as the people opt to err on the side of caution. The new re-designed notes are not in circulation in the desired quantities, the return of old denominations of N200, N500, and N1,000 notes has been problematic, and on top of it all, depositors cannot have access to their money. While the CBN claims that it has released new notes into circulation and that an otherwise necessary policy is being sabotaged by the political class looking for cash to buy votes and voters; opponents of the CBN’s policy question the timing of the policy and the difficulties imposed on the people. On the eve of a general election, both the poor and the rich are lamenting that they can’t have access to money. Nigeria goes to the polls this week, tottering on the edge of the cliff.
