Tour du Rwanda 2023: British Rider Vernon Wins First Stage (KT Press)

The 22-year old rider who races for Soudal – Quick-Step Devo Team, sprinted to the finish line ahead of JEANNIÈRE Emilien of Total Energies and Mulubrhan Henok ...

Nsengimana (wearing no.12) led the break away pack alongside Dutch rider Fouché, 24 with whom he traded places several times. “The plan to win was there but the first day was hard but tomorrow we wish to win stages,” At 2.9kms there was no Rwandan in the lead pack but the Moroccans showed a power game to bring down the European riders (Total Energies) who had a good peloton lead throughout the stage. Fouché was seen struggling to catch up with the Nsengimana at the Ntunga to stand a chance to win the stage but the Rwandan refused to give way. After the Ntunga section (44.1km to the finish line) Fouché managed to pass Nsengimana and maintained the lead up to Rwamagana town but the Rwandan rider closed in shoulder- to-shoulder, tire- to- tire as the peloton was also closing in fast. As the riders approached Musha, with 49.6 kilometers left to the finish line, Nsengimana left Fouché with a wide range of about half a kilometer distance.

Simon Hupperetz is a Belgian language teacher based in Kigali who is helping to build the base ahead of the historic African road worlds.

Clubs are flourishing, and the Africa Rising Centre, home of the national team, opened in Musanze. Coaches, teachers and educators are part of the success of the entire project,” Hupperetz said. In 2006, the Tour of Rwanda moved up to a UCI 2.1 category race. “All of them are part of the same and fragile ecosystem. “Our main focus is on youth development, one of the biggest missing links in cycling in Rwanda,” said Hupperetz. “They care for and shape athletes until others take over. Every racer needs support, and it’s about building the cycling community from its base. He’s worked closely with the UCI as a coach, educator, and consultant since 2013. Another of their strengths is their power to weight ratio which often means they are strong climbers.” “Rwanda is a beautiful country,” Hupperetz said.
