Nick Pope's Carabao Cup final ban is cruel – for Newcastle, it is ... (The Athletic)

Nick Pope's red card against Liverpool has ruled him out of the League Cup final and brought back some bad memories for Newcastle United.

[Loris Karius](https://theathletic.com/football/player/loris-karius-AA3C9jGfh6K68O04/) and [Mark Gillespie](https://theathletic.com/football/player/mark-gillespie-q0yp8Z7Wff8gmKYo/), third- and fourth-choice keepers respectively, have not played first-team football this season. Newcastle would go on to open the scoring through [Joelinton](https://theathletic.com/football/player/joelinton-PoFBCNiMPFwgTqrb/) moments later. The average distance from the goal during those actions (18.7m) is only second to [Alisson](https://theathletic.com/football/player/alisson-tnsx3VLvny2hiY7b/) (19.8m). [Martin Dubravka](https://theathletic.com/football/player/martin-dubravka-h4Z99nUEVOv2Z2rg/), who came on to replace him, cannot play after representing [Manchester United](https://theathletic.com/football/team/manchester-united/), their opponents, earlier in the competition. Five days after the 3-1 defeat, doctors said he suffered a concussion during the game. It was a bad day for the Pope family. He played well in the early stages, linking up well with the irrepressible Saint-Maximin, but was asked to make way for replacement keeper Dubravka. The Egyptian failed to gather it initially but Pope still needed to address the danger. Either way, when Pope stooped to head it into touch, he realised the ball was lower than he anticipated. Pope backpedals incredibly quickly, and when Adams is forced into a shot by the covering defence, makes the stop with his feet. “We always wanted him to be in a position where if there were balls coming through, he could come and impact it,” Billy Mercer, Pope’s goalkeeper coach at Burnley, tells The Athletic. [Nick Pope](https://theathletic.com/football/player/nick-pope-4ObCyTd1SVJaW4Kn/)’s blood-rush red card means Newcastle will be without their brilliant goalkeeper for the Carabao Cup final next weekend.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope should not be suspended for the Carabao Cup final after receiving a red card against Liverpool, according to Gary Lineker.

So then it comes down to Loris Karius, who hasn't played a game for two years [or Mark Gillespie] who's never played in the Premier League." "It's a big blow for Newcastle. "If he'd have got another yellow he would have missed two games but not the Carabao Cup final. Let him play in the cup final. "Wasn't Joelinton on nine yellows?" However, suspensions for straight red cards apply to all domestic competitions.

I think the referee could have easily given a yellow card in that situation.” For me it was a harsh reaction but I understand if it’s in the rules." I'm of the view I think that was harsh, personally. I think he just probably slightly misjudged the ball. Football rules state a goalkeeper can be sent off for a handball offence if he was deemed to have denied a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity through the handball. Mohamed Salah would have been through on goal had Pope not handled the ball but Newcastle defender Sean Longstaff was also in the picture as he raced back towards his own goal.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope will serve his one-match ban in next week's Carabao Cup final.

"It's a big blow for Newcastle. "If he'd have got another yellow he would have missed two games but not the Carabao Cup final. It's the right thing to do." So then it comes down to Loris Karius, who hasn't played a game for two years [or Mark Gillespie] who's never played in the Premier League." The rules were changed on suspensions from accumulating yellow cards only being applied for that specific competition. Referee Anthony Taylor wasted little time in brandishing a red card, meaning he would miss next week's Carabao Cup final.

CRAIG HOPE: Nick Pope was left picking grass from his teeth. When he did finally look up after falling to the ground and handling outside of his penalty ...

He was not even on the bench, and in the two months since he has not made a matchday squad. Newcastle may have lost an important match to Liverpool on Saturday, but it also felt like they went a goal down in the cup final, such is the weight of Pope’s loss. Supporters will travel with more confidence than that given their faith in Howe, but you cannot ignore a run of one win in seven in the Premier League and the failure to score more than one goal in a game since Boxing Day. ‘It’s the worst timing that it could possibly be,’ he said of Pope’s suspension. As he chatted to us that night in Riyadh, there was hope of him making his Newcastle debut the following week at home against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup. In being what they thought was fair to understudies Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow, by allowing them some stage time elsewhere, they have ended up with a stand-in last seen fluffing his lines in the grandest theatre of all, the Champions League final. Newcastle played well there-after, but they did not score. When he did finally look up after falling to the ground and handling outside of his penalty area, he was met with another whack in the mouth — a red card to rule him out of Sunday’s final against [Manchester United](/sport/teampages/manchester-united.html) at Wembley. Darlow was keen to head out on loan too and joined Hull City on deadline day. That is how long the German has been out of circulation. But that is only half the story. Even Karius, still only 29, had just about forgotten he was a footballer.
