Inquiry blames UEFA for Paris final fiasco nd credits Liverpool fans ... (Metro)

The findings of the 158-page report reveal that senior figures at UEFA were aware that the organisation was ignoring its own safety and security policies.

Furthermore, there was ‘no evidence’ to support the ‘reprehensible’ claims made by UEFA and the French authorities in the aftermath that masses of ticketless Liverpool fans attempting to gain illegal entry to the match were at fault. 21 recommendations have been made to UEFA by the panel in order to ensure that a similar, or worse, fiasco cannot happen again in future. Worryingly, the panel concluded that it is ‘concerned that there remains a misconception [among the French authorities] about what actually happened and a complacency regarding what needs to change. ‘Senior officials at the top of UEFA allowed this to happen, even though the shortcomings of its model were widely known at senior management level.’ ‘That inexplicable misconception resulted in a policing approach that lacked capacity for engagement, and which actively failed.’ It self-evidently did not.’

Liverpool FC slam leak of report report over Champions League ... (Liverpool Echo)

Liverpool Football Club has slammed a leaked report into the disgusting treatment of Liverpool fans at the Champions League Final in Paris.

A spokesperson from Liverpool FC said: "It’s hugely disappointing that a report of such significance, such importance to football supporters’ lives and future safety, should be leaked and published in this way. UEFA, as event owner, is said to be assigned "primary responsibility", but it's understood some commission members disagreed with the conclusion. The group has now finalised its conclusions, with the 158-page report being leaked to a number of media organisations. It's also understood French authorities will be criticised for deflecting responsibility, particularly after false claims about a mass of fans without tickets or fake ones. Fans outside the Stade de France were tear gassed by riot police, crushed when trying to enter the stadium and mugged by armed gangs of locals. The report is set to find the failings "almost led to a disaster" after faults by European football's governing body, UEFA, and the lack of a venue risk assessment by French authorities.

And that, in a nutshell, is the problem Matip poses at the moment. It was the error of a man massively short on confidence. And that was all before the 10-minute mark. While the official party line is that nobody wants to see it, in truth it put the icing on the cake. The ultimate purveyor of the dark arts, even it has not helped Everton much this season, he reacted angrily to the incident. In truth, though, that was a rare opening for Everton, and Liverpool seemed to systematically crank up the heat on the visitors. Prior to the match, The new signing has come into unfortunate circumstances, to say the least. But as he rushed on through, he saw fit to kick the ball away from Pickford. Bajčetić did actually control it very well, even getting it on target, but it would have gone down as one of the best ever goals in this storied fixture. He got through the whole game without having committed a foul, but having won the ball back numerous times, repeatedly snuffing out counter-attacking threats and putting Liverpool on the attack. A much-improved performance was a low bar, but Liverpool cleared it with room to spare.
