<em>You</em> season 4 part 1 recap: Joe finds a spot of bother in ... (EW.com)

'You' season 4 finds Joe's solitary new life in London disrupted by a murder and a new pack of acquaintances. Read EW's recap of episodes 1 through 5.

Rhys expects him to be grateful that Roald's trussed and ready to be posthumously framed for all the murders. He conks Joe in the head with a rifle, and Joe wakes up chained in Hampsie's dungeon. Kate tells them all to back off, and everyone's cruelly amused that Joe doesn't know the truth about her: she'd be first to the guillotine in a revolution. Kate takes the opportunity to come clean to Joe: her father's one of the most powerful and most evil men on the planet. Phoebe bursts into Kate's room and perches like a queen on the trunk with the body, and Joe and Kate try to hold it together as she tells them that she caught Adam with a servant. You texts again, and at first Joe wants to lash out at this upending of his life, but he holds back, realizing that what you wants is a kindred spirit. Roald tells Kate to quit playing with boys and to claim her place in the world. Joe saves the day with his observation skills, leading Kate to the vandal thanks to the hostel key he saw sticking out of her pocket. Joe has no memory of doing a murder, and he curses the whole time he's dragging the body to the boot of his borrowed car. Adam warns Joe that Malcolm's a blackmailer, and Joe realizes this honestly makes it unlikely that Adam's the murderer. To avoid the paparazzi, Joe slips in through the back with a woman who knows the door code. Phoebe invites him to Simon's gallery opening and orders him to select a suit from the closet of freebies she gets from designers.

In 'You' Season 4, Joe Goldberg Is No Longer in Control (The New York Times)

The Netflix thriller's latest episodes have its antihero, played by Penn Badgley, on the back foot as he navigates the world of London's ultrarich.

In London, “not only are there people who have a ridiculous amount of money and have no idea what’s going on in the world, but they have titles,” Gamble said. “We never felt any responsibility to reform Joe, to give him a particularly happy ending,” Gamble said. It’s an evolution that Badgley is also keenly aware of: Joe is now “managing to grow emotionally, while not growing at all,” he said in a recent video interview. In Joe’s twisted mind, “he seems to actually respect her more,” he added. The stories he told himself with previous love interests, like Beck in Season 1 or Love, “stopped in those scenes with Marienne,” Gamble said. Setting the fourth season in London was, in part, a practical one: Paris would have been more complicated in terms of language and logistics. The season sees Joe “walking himself closer and closer to a self-awareness that he really won’t know what to do with,” Gamble said. Ahead of each new season, the production team ask themselves, “what kind of thriller we’re going to put him in,” Gamble said. His plans, however, are quickly scuppered when members of the ultrarich group of friends he resentfully joins start getting killed, and Joe must find the murderer before he’s framed for their crimes. (“In a more just society, we would all see Joe as problematic and not be interested in the show, but that’s not the society we live in,” Badgley [told The New York Times in 2019](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/24/arts/television/penn-badgley-you-netflix.html).) Not only is it set in London, but we soon find Joe on the back foot, being manipulated by a mysterious enemy who may be an even more accomplished killer. Marienne fled to Paris with her daughter — and Joe vowed to find her.

'You' Season 4 Episode 1 Recap: The Teacher Becomes the Student (Collider.com)

Season 4 of You is finally available on Netflix, bringing Penn Badgley back as the charming serial killer Joe Goldberg. And since no season of You can be ...

Although he doesn’t appreciate the company, Joe shares the evening with Malcolm and his rich friends, drinking to the point of total blackout. But seeing how Joe disposed of the body, the real killer is now intrigued and wants to know more about the professor. Joe didn’t kill Malcolm, and the culprit is probably one of the wealthy people Joe met the night before since the killer followed them after the party. To show how grateful he is to Jonathan for saving Kate from the robbers, Malcolm drags his colleague to Sundry House, a nightclub for the wealthy. After the assault, Joe asks Kate not to mention him to the police since his working visa is shaky. Bored by his mundane life, Joe is attracted to Kate and gives into his obsession by researching more about the woman. Due to his white knight complex, Joe intervenes and saves Kate from the criminals. Also, Joe is asked to get rid of Marienne, the only person that knows he’s alive. That’s because, for Season 4, Joe uses the identity of Jonathan Moore to score a job as a literature professor in a college in London. Freed from his marital ties, Joe decides to go to Europe, where Marienne goes with her daughter Juliette (Dallas Skye) to escape the killer after learning about his true nature. After staging his death, Joe goes to Paris to search for Marianne. And since no season of You can be like the previous one, the series is once again taking us to uncharted territories by giving Joe a new identity and carrying him across the ocean.

Joe manages to run away, but Roald catches up to him, and they fight. At the party, Malcolm urges Joe to let loose and try to enjoy the night. Joe hobbles back into Kate’s room to find her staring at Gemma dead on the floor. 'You' Season 4 Cast and Character Guide: Who Are the New ... (Collider.com)

Here's who'll be joining Penn Badgley's Joe Goldberg in Season 4 of Netflix's hit series You, which takes the serial killer to the streets of England.

Although he is close to the rest of the aristocratic group, his past will often draw a barrier between his perspective and that of his peers when it comes to money. Sophie is Simon's sister and the daughter of a tech entrepreneur. Malcolm is Kate's boyfriend, and he is the life of the party. Before playing Joe's friend turned rival, he also participated in the first seasons of Euphoria and The White Lotus. Simon is also an artist, and he is working with Kate to organize his art exhibition. With another setting as the backdrop to this insane storyline, [there comes the need for fresh faces](https://collider.com/you-season-4-new-characters-explained/) that will be a part of the serial killer's social circle in that location. Marienne was first introduced in Season 3 as Joe's librarian co-worker and the last person that the character was obsessed with. Different from her boyfriend, the character does perceive her wealth as all fun and games. The actor also appeared in two coming-of-age classics: Easy A and John Tucker Must Die. Despite his urge to prove that he is a good person, the serial killer returns to his old habits when his close contacts, a.k.a the UK elite, are taken down one by one. After his partner in crime, [Love (Victoria Pedretti), was killed at the end of Season 3](https://collider.com/you-season-4-love/), nothing can prevent him from pursuing a new target. You Season 4 Part 1 Ending Explained: Who is Joe's Stalker? (Den of Geek)

Joe Goldberg returns for another rousing game of cat-and-mouse on You Season 4 — only this time, he's the mouse.

Eventually, Joe is shocked to find that Rhys is both his stalker as well as the killer. That’s not going away anytime soon.) And now that Rhys has his number, he’s ready to deliver a dose of Joe Goldberg justice. Once he’s back in London, the news is aflutter with the news of the latest killing … There’s never been such a disconnect in the way that Joe presents himself to the outside world and what he’s really thinking in the innermost reaches of his devious brain. Thanks to his star pupil Nadia, Joe has already read “Good Man, Cruel World,” Rhys’s captivating memoir of how he went from rags to riches, pulling himself out of a childhood of trauma and poverty and ending up in the company of high society. Under the principle of Chekov’s gun — a gun in the first act will resurface by the third — it seems that Marianne will somehow come into play later in the season. Why the detective accepted a simple image of a locket as proof of her murder is perplexing, but whatever. The first half of the season establishes the cat-and-mouse game between Joe and his stalker, even revealing the man behind the shady, disappearing texts in the final few moments of the Part 1 finale. Joe’s focus immediately shifts as he scrambles to try and figure out who is stalking him, why, and what they have planned for him in the long run. When we first check in with Joe, he’s living a pretty normal life, working as a professor of literature and spending his nights curled up with a book and a cuppa in his fancy flat. It’s a delightful twist that upends the typical You narrative, putting Joe Goldberg on the defensive instead of the offensive. [You](https://www.denofgeek.com/you/), Joe (Penn Badgley) finds himself on the other side of the Atlantic.

So, Rhys is trying to make Joe more comfortable with the idea of taking Roald’s life, especially after the Oxford circle showed their true colors during their weekend getaway. Season 4 is all about how rich people are just the worst, and the location Rhys chooses to play his mind games with Joe underlines this theme. From the first episode of You Season 4, we learn that a serial killer is on the loose in London. Unfortunately, the real Eat-the-Rich Killer is nearby, knocks Joe down, and drags him into a nightmarish trap. In the case of Season 4 of You, it’s only in Episode 5 that we see the story transform from a murder mystery into something darker. [You](https://collider.com/tag/you/) work as a psychological thriller in which we see the world through the eyes of an obsessive killer, every season has a turning point where Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) finds himself in the middle of a horror movie.

Evan is the culture editor for Men’s Health, with bylines in The New York Times, MTV News, Brooklyn Magazine, and VICE. This reference to open the season is, actually, a fairly perfect encapsulation of Joe Goldberg as a character, and sets up his primary internal struggle of both the season and the series as a whole. Joe is aware enough to understand this, but, as in the rest of the Season 4 Part 1 Episodes, and, really, everything we've seen to this point, he has one major blind spot: again, himself. Is he really? Joe is an incredibly thoughtful, and, for the most part, self-aware person. Is he better? Charlotte Ritchie is brilliantly sharp and wry as Alison, the friend who tries to lure the other two away from the game to actually participate in the real world every now and then, and there are also excellent guest appearances from the likes of Starstruck’s Rose Matafeo. For a certain generation, Charlotte Ritchie will always be Oregon, the naive, hopeless student trying to hide her privileged background from her rebellious new best friend Vod in hit university-based comedy-drama Fresh Meat. Her character Alison is the glue that holds the entire concept together: her accident in episode one means she’s the only human who can see and interact with the hilarious family of ghosts that inhabit Button House, her newly inherited home. Charlotte Ritchie joined the cast in Series 7 last year as Bonnie, a widow who becomes one of the vicar’s love interests, beginning a tempestuous romance which is a pleasing distraction from the fact that this tiny Cambridgeshire village seems to attract a wildly disproportionate number of murders. If you’re new to You, it’s the story of bookshop manager Joe Goldberg, who has a pathological tendency to develop dangerous infatuations with women, which usually end in lots of bloodshed and/or a prolonged stay in a plexiglass book vault. And in Season 4, Charlotte Ritchie gets the unenviable honour of playing the latest obsession of creepy-yet-handsome, ‘I just can’t help falling in love with (and then probably killing) you’ Joe, aka Penn Badgley. This award-winning Channel 4/Netflix comedy drama is a semi-autobiographical work by Mae Martin, who stars as themself, alongside Charlotte Ritchie as their girlfriend George.

Ed Speleers on His 'You' Alter-Ego Rhys Montrose and Playing the ... (Collider.com)

Netflix's psychological thriller You has had audiences in a chokehold since 2018, and the highly anticipated fourth season is bound to send everyone down ...

So that took a bit of time to get my head around and that took some time later on in life to get my head around. I feel that comes from, you just need a little bit of a core understanding to start with. It means a lot when someone is genuinely very encouraging, so I really appreciate you taking the time to do that. I loved it, I loved the book series, and I love the movie. I feel that many actors at that age, they get the chance to try themselves out on smaller things and dip their toe in and get a bit of experience under their belt, allowing themselves to learn and make mistakes, but I feel that mine was very big and very exposed. I feel there [were] a lot of tough scenes because we're having to tread the line so very carefully to what's going on and what's not going on throughout the whole season. And if it was the scene with Joe and the zip ties and the garage, I do not want to know. It was very fun to watch, and I cannot wait for audiences to see it. I think the overall challenge with Rhys was piecing him together and trying to understand how he operated. But in order to do that, you have to understand their mindset, and you have to get on board with the idea that they're making decisions because they think this is the best thing. I actually have in my notes that you have a couple of really fantastic lines, particularly towards the second half of the season, that I would've been tongue-tied if I was trying to say them. Collider: There is so much duplicity built into your character of Rhys that I just love to watch.

“You” has survived its fourth season, but that rope now looks seriously frayed. Yet while the fourth season begins in characteristically twisty fashion, before it’s over the Netflix hit feels dangerously close to jumping the shark, having become a bit too cute for its (or Your, if You prefer) own good. It’s during the second half, alas, when the story begins going off the rails, as the writers unleash developments that undermine the tantalizing place where the midseason break leaves off.

Who Is the “Eat the Rich Killer” in You Season 4? (Seventeen.com)

The "Eat the Rich" Killer is revealed in the final episode of Part 1 of "You" season 4. Find out who the murderer is here.

Before leaving, Rhys kicks an open-flame lantern and sets the creepy cellar up in flames, but Joe and Roald manage to escape and return to London with the others. We can guess that the reason Rhys is killing his “friends” is because he legitimately *hates* them, but his true motive is undisclosed. Joe stops him but is then knocked out and chained in a medieval-style dungeon by Rhys Montrose — author, potential London mayoral candidate, and the true “Eat the Rich” killer. [Desperate to let go of his past](https://www.seventeen.com/celebrity/movies-tv/a42733183/how-beck-died-you-netflix/) and avoid the (many) mistakes he made, Joe — sorry, Jonathan — tries to have a “quiet European holiday.” But then he meets his coworker, Malcolm, and begrudgingly falls in with a group of super-wealthy friends from Oxford who now dominate London’s social scene. Rhys wants Joe to kill Roald, so he can frame him for the murders of Malcolm, Simon, and Gemma. Naturally (because this is You we’re talking about) Malcolm ends up dead, knife straight through the heart, in the premiere episode of season 4, part 1.
