How to celebrate Lunar New Year like an Emperor (CNN)

At the Hong Kong Palace Museum, an exhibition of treasures from the Qing Dynasty shows how the art-loving Qianlong Emperor celebrated Lunar New Year.

Lunar New Year feasts were particularly special for the Emperor because it would be one of the very few occasions he was allowed to eat in the same room as family and friends. "(He) never commissioned (only) a single piece of clothing," said Wang. Everywhere you look at the Palace Museum exhibition, the emperor's penchant for luxury is on show, from hanging panels featuring jade floral motifs to a pair of golden gourd decorations. The $450-million building opened last summer and has a rotating collection of more than 900 treasures on loan from Beijing's Forbidden City, from rare ceramics to delicate scroll paintings. “I do feel worried for myself and the community, said Zou, 34. Earlier this month, an Indiana University student was [stabbed on a bus](https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/01/15/indiana-university-student-stabbed-bus-asian/?itid=lk_inline_manual_18) by an assailant who allegedly told police she did it because the victim was “Chinese.” “It makes me upset.” So she tempered her mourning with visits to a Buddhist temple and NASA’s Johnson Space Center while seeing loved ones in Houston. After attending a Lunar New Year event in Queens, Rep. On Instagram, an account run by Citadel Outlets, an outlet mall near Monterey Park, made an abrupt shift from celebratory videos to canceling the mall’s Lunar New Year celebration after Saturday night’s events. Asian Americans across the United States woke up to the horrific news out of California for the first day of Lunar New Year, reviving fears about hate crimes and reigniting questions about whether to venture into the public. “Even though it may not be hate-motivated, what we saw is our community members were targeted,” said Manjusha Kulkarni, co-founder of the Stop AAPI Hate advocacy group and executive director of AAPI Equity Alliance in Los Angeles. But the mass violence left a sense of shock hanging over many gatherings. There were no threats, but a Fairfax County police spokesman, Lt. The 10 victims, who have not yet been identified, were “probably” all of Asian descent, police officials said. You can’t live in fear.”

A study by Peking University released earlier in January estimated that nearly 900 million people had contracted COVID by 11 January, which amounts to 64 per cent of the population, SCMP reported. What is the current situation in the country? This year, as China abandons its zero-COVID policy, it expects two billion people to take trips. Will this lead to a further surge in cases? Last week, Xi Jinping also acknowledged concerns about a COVID-19 spike in rural China Wu said on Saturday that the “wave of epidemic has already infected about 80 per cent of the people” in China which has a population of 1.4 billion. “Medical facilities are relatively weak in rural areas, thus prevention is difficult and the task is arduous,” Xi said while stressing on the need to prioritise the health and safety of the elderly, according to Al Jazeera. Acknowledging the concern about the transmission in rural areas driven by the Lunar New Year travel, President Xi Jinping said last week that he was “primarily concerned about rural areas and rural residents”. It is expected that the Lunar New Year holiday travel rush – known as Chunyun – can drive a new wave of infections in China, especially in its vulnerable countryside. China rang in Lunar New Year on Sunday (22 January) with large gatherings and movement of people across the country.

5 things to know about Lunar New Year and the Year of the Rabbit (Terrace Standard)

Why is it the Year of the Rabbit? The Year of the Tiger has now come to a close as the lunar calendar moves on to its fourth year in the Chinese zodiac cycle — ...

Lion dances are a form of traditional dance in China and other Asian countries — often performed at Lunar New Year celebrations — in which performers in a lion costume mimic the animal’s movements. Many celebrate the first day of the Lunar New Year at home with family, but parades and other public celebrations are popular options this year. Another popular Lunar New Year tradition is when parents, married couples and older family members hand out red envelopes containing crisp money and treats to unmarried youth and younger children. Those born in the Year of the Rabbit — including 2023, 2011, 1999, 1987 and every 12-year cycle before that — are associated with qualities like calm, empathy, patience and ingenuity. Each year is named after one of the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac in a repeating cycle. The Chinese zodiac is made up of 12 animals, starting with the rat and running through the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

News: Watford FC Celebrate Lunar New Year (Watford FC)

Everyone at Watford FC is delighted to be celebrating the Lunar New Year. As part of our celebrations, we invited Hornets' supporters group to share details ...

For a number of years, the Watford Chinese Association, in partnership with the Watford Palace Theatre, have hosted the Chinese New Year Culture Show. By 2013, with an increasing number of elderly members, it became apparent that there was a need to develop a centre for social activities for the older members and other elderly folks from the local and neighbouring community who are interested in Chinese culture and tradition. In 1998, headed by Mrs Hutchinson, the Watford Chinese (Sunday) School was founded to teach the Chinese language. The Watford Chinese Association was initially established in 1996 with the support of Watford Borough Council. This is beautifully highlighted by The Frank Soo Foundation Communities Youth Football project in partnership with the Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust. With initiatives like the 'We Campaign' and this Lunar New Year celebration, everyone at ESEA Hornets has been made to feel so welcome at Vicarage Road and we hope this encourages even more people from our communities to become Watford supporters. Widely known as the Spring Festival, the Chinese Lunar New Year is an important festival that marks the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season. Watford FC has always had links with East and South East Asia, with its tours to China in 1983, and Thailand in 1985. In December 2013, when China successfully landed a spacecraft carrying a robotic rover on the surface of the moon, they named the lunar rover Jade Rabbit. For over 2,000 years, the Chinese zodiac has played an integral role in Chinese culture. Some of you may also know Lunar New Year as Chinese New Year, but the festivity is commonly celebrated across various ESEA communities. All at Watford FC are delighted to be celebrating the Lunar New Year.

What Is Lunar New Year And How Do Lunar Calendars Work? (IFLScience)

The month of Ramadan is the ninth in the Islamic calendar and it lasts from the first sight of the crescent Moon to the next. Others are still in use today such as the Hebrew calendar, the calendar from the Hindu calendar family, and calendars descendent or influenced by the traditional Chinese calendar. The standard lunar year comes short of the solar year with 354 days and a handful of hours. With Chinese New Year yesterday, China has just entered the Year of the Rabbit, according to the lunar calendar. The Islamic Hijiri calendar has months that last either 29 or 30 days with each month, beginning at the first sight of our natural satellite following the new Moon. Since at least the neolithic, humans have been creating calendars to keep track of the changing seasons.
