Three talking points ahead of Athletic Club vs Real Madrid (Madrid Universal)

Real Madrid will face the grind in their upcoming games as they play Athletic Club, Atletico Madrid, and Real Sociedad in a span of nine days.

Toni Kroos and Luka Modric will look to use their experience against the veteran double pivot of Dani Garcia and Mikel Vesga, who tormented Real Madrid in their last meeting. The Ballon d’Or winner will thus look to be the protagonist tomorrow and look to lace up his goalscoring boots. Despite being harsh on Eduardo Camavinga in terms of controlling his minutes and taking him off prematurely, Carlo Ancelotti maintains that the youngster is untouchable at the club. Luckily for him, the duo are beginning to strike up a good partnership and will hope to keep a clean sheet on the night. Both Lucas Vazquez and Dani Carvajal are unavailable for the game at San Mames, putting Ancelotti in a tough spot like in the previous game. The hosts had a whopping 15 shots on target including eight blocked shots as opposed to Real Madrid’s seven and four respectively. What followed in the next ninety minutes is a story no Real Madrid player would wish to recall. Three points separate Real Madrid and Barcelona at the apex of the La Liga standings. The Catalans have taken down both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in their last four games and slammed five past AD Ceuta earlier this week. Having dropped seven points in a span of just five games, they have shot themselves in the foot. Three difficult fixtures lie ahead on the ‘ calendar, and it will be vital for them to maintain a winning streak. Even in their most desperate attempt to come out of the vicious cycle, they were trapped in, Los Blancos were staring down at a two-goal deficit in just 45 minutes.

La Liga Odds: Athletic vs. Real Madrid prediction, pick, how to watch ... (ClutchPoints)

Check our analysis on the La Liga odds series, which features our prediction and pick on the Athletic-Real Madrid game.

On the defensive side of things, Real Madrid has been providing serious headaches to Carlo Ancelotti. Real Madrid currently sits second in the La Liga table, and a win for Carlo Ancelotti’s side might just make their chase for the La Liga title with Barcelona much more exciting. Add Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, and Dani Ceballos to the mix as creative midfielders and Real Madrid might be getting their groove on. Real Madrid might be missing the contributions of David Alaba, Aurelien Tchouameni, Lucas Vasquez, and Daniel Carvajal. Although they enjoy a safe mid-table placement at eighth at the moment, they will need to see more wins if they want to catch up on Spain’s top clubs for a chance at the La Liga trophy and a spot for the Champions League. Athletic Club Bilbao looks to start a series of wins, following a 1-0 victory against Espanyol in the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid hope to revive their La Liga title chase as they travel to eighth placed Athletic Club on Sunday for a top tier showdown.

The biggest issue for Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti in this match is the continued absence of midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni who is missing for another few weeks with a calf injury. First Athletic play on the counter through Inaki Williams and win a corner but it comes to nothing. It's a dicey one for sure, and Berchiche will need to be careful, but there's probably not quite enough in that for VAR to overturn the call. 39th min: Athletic begin to ramp up the pressure in the attacking half, and win their fourth corner of the match. The referee only gives a yellow and VAR doesn't give it a look, but he'll certainly want to reign that kind of play in moving forward. The first is blocked but the second is on frame, and Unai Simon makes a great save! Athletic are in the clear ascendancy now, and Real Madrid are hanging on by a thread. The ball drops to him with nobody in the same zip code, and somehow he misses the target completely! On a corner, it's cleared but only to Yuri Berchiche who rips on frame from the top of the penalty area. The hosts have the ball in the back of the net, but it's disallowed! Gorka Guruzeta had a good scoring streak earlier in the season, but even things for him have dried up, and while he looked decent off the bench in this match, it wasn't enough to break Madrid hearts. Real Madrid keep pace with Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table after the Blaugrana managed a drab 1-0 win over Girona earlier in the day.

5 4 Benzema may have had the World Cup injury setback but he is back to get his groove on as he and the team target more silverware. One they'd rather have not had to, but it was a win that must surely have helped in terms of confidence after their previous 1-3 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final. and the city of Bilbao an utter joy. There's little surprise who leads the way when it comes to the net filling for Madrid. The 'mixing it up' saw Valverde pop a gentle cross to the back post and as the ball fell from Asensio's stretched header, almost behind the Frenchman, he swivelled and struck. A quick switch out wide to Asensio, into Benzema and shot! Penalty shout from Asensio on the back of the last corner. He stepped into the space between his markers, and then rearranged his body to allow for a gloriously controlled volley to be possible. But as that last break just showed, they have to be careful. Valverde getting on the ball again and letting fly from distance.

Player Ratings: Athletic Bilbao 0 - 2 Real Madrid; 2023 La Liga (Managing Madrid)

Camavinga was spectacular in deeper midfield role while Nacho continues to impress at right back.

Fede Valverde—7: Was involved in both goals — the cross to Asensio for Benzema’s acrobatic finish and the link-up with Rodrygo prior to Kroos inch-perfect shot. He was a constant in Real Madrid’s build up through the left and central sides of the pitch. He was the all around midfielder and put in a great shift. Eduardo Camavinga—9.5: MOTM - playing as the lone pivot or defensive midfielder in a midfield of three, Camavinga was outstanding. Eder normally comes out on top and did today as well — was aggressive with his step-outs and looked just as fast as Inaki whenever placed in a footrace. The Belgian and Madrid defense kept Athletic off the score-sheet, despite an xG of 1.16.
