John Brooks' move to Portuguese club Benfica provided the veteran defender with a new opportunity abroad, but after limited playing time over the past five.

Benfica leads the Primeira Liga table with 44 points and has advanced to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. Brooksโ€™ lack of playing time in Portugal has not helped his cause to get back into the USMNT picture over recent months. Brooks was a mainstay for Bundesliga club Wolfsburg over the past five seasons, totaling seven goals and five assists in 146 appearances in Germany.

Referee shows white card during Sporting Lisbon vs Benfica (SportsJOE.ie)

Sporting Lisbon and Benfica were both shown a white card during their fierce derby match after a new rule in Portugal was introduced.

Although not a common practice yet, the white card is part of a series of new introductions in football. White cards have been introduced as part of a new initiative for officials to recognise and praise clubs for fair play during games and was introduced to improve ethical values in the sport. After the issue, the referee was seen brandishing a white card to both sets of medical staff, which was met with cheers from the crowd in Lisbon.
