The Mystery Behind Friday The 13th (Guardian)

A day that has been long associated with bad luck and superstition. For some people today is the creepiest day on the calendar.

The real Friday the 13th panic started in the 20th century. On the other hand, the connection between the 13th and Friday bringing misfortune still needs to be made more evident. Even the number 13 itself has always been associated with bad luck since the dawn of time.

Paraskevidekatriaphobia refers to the specific fear of Friday the 13th, not just the number 13. The 13th person at the dinner is considered to have been Judas, who betrayed Jesus. Another popular explanation for Friday the 13th’s unluckiness is the narrative of Jesus’ last supper and crucifixion. There are several theories as to why Friday the 13th is considered unlucky. So where does the superstition come from and how many Friday the 13ths are there in 2023? Some hotel buildings have gone to considerable lengths to get rid of the 13th floor and would skip straight to the 14th floor while some hotels do not have “room 13” altogether.

Friday the 13th: Why is the date associated with horror and bad luck? (The Indian Express)

The day is often mentioned to create a sense of spookiness or fear or to maintain caution, because something bad can happen.

In Japanese and other languages having common roots, the digit’s pronunciation, “Shi”, is the same as that of the word for death. Thirteen is often seen as unlucky because 12 is considered complete in itself: there are 12 Greek Gods, 12 signs of the Zodiac, 12 months in a year, and so on. The dictionary entry “triskaidekaphobia” — a composite of the Greek word for 13, ‘treiskadeka’ and ‘phobia’ (fear of) — describes “an irrational or disproportionate fear of the number 13”. There was a Friday, the 13th each in 2021 and 2022 as well. In fact, a very large number of films have “Friday the 13th” in their titles. The first January-October Friday the 13th year in the 21st century (2001 to 2100) occurred in 2006, which is two years after a leap year. So we can keep on going to find 10 January-October Friday the 13th years for the 25th century (2401 to 2500). The days and dates of any leap year match up again in periods of 28 years. Any leap year starting on a Sunday has three Friday the 13ths which fall in January, April and July. So this year, in 2023, we’ll have a Friday the 13th in January and October. Then in the 24th century (2301 to 2400), the cycle is again perturbed. The last time we had only one Friday the 13th in a calendar year was in Therefore, if our twofold Friday the 13th year comes three years after a leap year, as it does in 2023, the days and dates will match up again in 11, 22 and 28 years. This marked the first time in the 21st century (2001 to 2100) that New Year’s Day started on a Sunday. Friday has always gotten a bad rap regardless of its number in the month. Then the sole Friday the 13th of 2025 falls on June 13, 2025, exactly 26 weeks (2 x 13 weeks) after the December 2024 Friday the 13th. And it’s the first of two Friday the 13ths in 2023.

Every Friday the 13th movie, ranked (The Week Magazine)

It's Friday the 13th once again, and you know what that means: It's time to revisit the highs and lows of one of horror's most iconic franchises.

But for pure entertainment value, and a showcase of why horror fans still obsess over Friday the 13th to this day, you can't do better than Jason Lives. A big deal is made of the fact that Jason is seemingly back, in contrast to the previous chapter, in which barely anybody seemed to care about his apparent return. This injects much-needed forward momentum into a series that, at its worst, can leave us just waiting around for the kills and for the characters to figure out that Jason is on a murder spree. The attempt to move on from Jason with a copycat killer in A New Beginning was widely rejected, so with the follow-up, the franchise throws up its hands in defeat by flat-out resurrecting him. Still, it was important to the development of the slasher genre in that it helped cement many of its tropes, and it relies much more on gore — as we now come to expect from the genre — compared to the more subtle Halloween. The deaths also start getting more enjoyably gratuitous and comedic here; one involving a man in a wheelchair is downright mean, but darkly funny, a combination that would come to define the series. The result is a mash-up of the best of a Freddy movie and the best of a Jason movie, including the dream sequences of the former and real-world slashings of the latter. But since Jason literally went to space in the installment before this one, it was important for the pendulum to swing back in the other direction, reminding audiences why the character isn't (always) a joke. It's a distraction in what is otherwise a crucial sequel, as this is the first to introduce Jason wearing his iconic hockey mask. But even regular human Jason turns in some of the series' all-time great kills — the highlight involving a shirtless man unlucky enough to be walking on his hands before Jason arrives — and one of its most memorable final showdowns, set in a barn. Jason X looks and feels like a SyFy original movie despite receiving a theatrical release, from its visual effects that look right out of a PlayStation game to some of the most wooden performances of the series. It's Friday the 13th once again, and you know what that means: It's time to revisit the highs and lows of one of horror's most iconic franchises.

In Jason’s ending—which interestingly noted that Jason and Scorpion are the same species of undead—Liu Kang noticed how good Jason was as a killer and thought to recruit him. Jason still kind of fell into the background for that series and its follow-up Freddy vs. When she throws Jason his machete in the end, there is a feeling of a connection with the way he stares at her. It was also decided that Jason was not going to be a damn superhero. In some of the early script treatments, Jason would even blatantly be on the teens’ side! He is driven by revenge over his dead mother, who was driven herself by revenge for Jason being teased and allowed to die as a child due to negligence. Sometimes they even gave Jason the climactic moment of getting to talk. Just like it was satisfying to see Jason thrown around by a psychic teen girl, people would love to see Jason shut Freddy up by giving him the mauling he so richly deserves. While it was very messy and all over the place (and not in the fun blood and guts way), the final seconds did make a major hint that we would be seeing Jason take on Freddy Krueger… What these treatments all basically agreed on was that at the end of the day, countless victims or not, Jason Voorhees was always going to be the good guy when faced off against someone like Freddy Krueger. Due to her telekinesis and life of trauma, the conflict was supposed to invoke the concept of Jason vs. Over the course of the

At least Whitney's brother Clay ( [Jared Padalecki](https://collider.com/tag/jared-padalecki/)) finds and frees her, and the two stop Jason and dump him into the lake. The film knows how ridiculous the whole premise is, poking fun at itself and the series in general, and the poster mirrors that, with regular Jason on one side and Uber Jason on the other side of a large knife (and the screaming victim's reflection in the knife... The poster isn't bad, with the "Jason Lives" gravestone and Jason's mask behind it, like a full-moon (which the Jason Takes Manhattan poster should have gone with), the lights glowing through the holes a tease of the supernatural element the film initiates with Jason. Picking up after the events of the previous film, Jason (Richard Brooker), injured and maskless, picks up a change of clothes at a store near Crystal Lake, but having left his wallet in his other pants he just kills the store owner and his wife. Kill, kill, chainsaw kill, and the [iconic sleeping bag kill](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed8T-GzBcIY), leaving Tina to unleash her powers on Jason. Jason Lives is one of the highest rated films in the franchise, bringing with it degrees of humor, fourth-wall breaking, and action (and a killer (no pun intended) Alice Cooper song, "The Man Behind The Mask"). So someone is killing the counselors of Camp Crystal Lake, and while it's believed to be Jason Voorhees, a boy who drowned in 1957 because counselors were to busy doing the nasty and not supervising, it turns out to be (SPOILER) his mother, Pamela! Final girl Alice stops her, decapitating Pamela with a machete, and falls asleep in a canoe, only for (ANOTHER SPOILER) the decomposing corpse of Jason (Ari Lehman) to rise out of the water and attack her. The poster for the film is a rehash of the one for the first film, with only the picture inside the silhouette and the fact it says "Part 2" the only thing that separates it. Five years after that, a school for camp counselors is opened on the shore of Crystal Lake, where leader Paul Holt (John Furey) assures the group that the legend of Jason living in the woods is just that - legend. It turns out Jason isn't Jason at all, but paramedic Roy Burns (Dick Wieand), Joey's dad, who goes a little off the tracks after the death of his son.

As much as superstition is part of Friday the 13th, so are the bevy of deals available at tattoo parlors across the nation as many look to deter the "bad ...

"Once I got my first Friday the 13th tattoo, it oddly became a tradition," said Andrew Luna, another patron. The belief comes from a passed down tale of a sailor who once got the number 13 tattooed on himself so that if bad luck ever approached him, it would pass him by. "For us, it turned into kind of a good luck, something fun to do."
