Abubakar's Endgame (Council on Foreign Relations)

For Nigeria's serial presidential candidate, familiarity is both strength and disadvantage. Former Nigeria Vice President Atiku Abubakar ...

A favorable reading of Abubakar’s ideological flexibility is that his desperation to offer his leadership to the country is such that he is not unwilling to forge common cause with the strangest of bedfellows. Nor, just like every other member of the political class, did he anticipate what was to follow after Peter Obi, seeing the handwriting on the wall, decamped from the PDP less than three days to its presidential primary. Furthermore, and not unlike Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate with whom he is most often compared, Abubakar is a man of means; although, again similar to Tinubu, the source of his wealth is a subject of controversy. At the same time, and unsurprisingly, his reneging on the existing North-South ethno-regional entente has not come without a cost. That he has, somehow, not been able to construct a distinct lineage, at least not in the manner of Tinubu, is one of the key differences between the two. More crucially, he is a known quantity to the political elite, among whom he is openly extolled for his generosity and unswerving loyalty to friends and political associates. For a card-carrying member of a deeply conservative northern Nigerian elite, he has probably done more than anyone in living memory to denounce its unearned religious-based indulgences. Having run and failed so many times, Abubakar has struggled to persuade many previously loyal but now fatigued stalwarts that this time is different. Over the years, he has called for urgent attention to the lives of the northern poor too many times to recall. Judging by media reports, his spectacular [falling out](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2006/12/24/sacked-nigerian-deputy-defiant) with his former boss (a relationship that, to his credit, he has tried many times to salvage) was mainly due to his desperation to push the latter out of office at the conclusion of their first term in 2003. Since he set his sights on the office more than three decades ago, Abubakar has either [running](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-61611081) for the Nigerian presidency since 1993, and there is no presidential race in which he has not been in the mix since he concluded two terms of office as vice president to Olusegun Obasanjo in 2007.

PT State of the Race: Is it still a four-horse race? (Premium Times)

After four months of watching the candidates on the hustings, does this presidential election still look like a four-horse race?

By 2018, he had returned to the PDP and again ran unsuccessfully for the ticket of the party. Even in Kano, some of those who joined the NNPP with or because of him have retraced their steps to their old parties. This is because Mr Buhari, who since his first entrance to the race in 2003 has garnered the bulk of northern votes, is not a candidate in this election. After a few days of so-called million-man marches in a few cities when the campaigns opened in September, the excitement appeared to have quickly petered out and Mr Obi has been making better headlines from visiting IDP camps. Mr Kwankwaso ran for the APC ticket in 2014, shortly after defecting with other PDP governors to the then-new party. Mr Obi has also been accorded rock star reception in churches and Christian gatherings, where he has sometimes been allowed to speak from the pulpit. Mr Wike has since managed to rally four other governors and their antics have been receiving as much space in the media as has the Atiku campaign efforts. At the flag-off of the reelection campaign of one of them in Ibadan, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, party members chanted Atiku’s name to mock a suggestion by the G5 that they would be told to work for a different candidate. While he has played no direct role in that government, many have said he bears vicarious responsibility as a co-founder and leader of the APC and for his role in the nomination and eventual election of President Buhari. Mr Tinubu appears to have weathered the storm over his same-faith ticket and also appears to enjoy strong support in the North. Mr Tinubu has been perhaps the busiest of all the candidates in the campaign circuit. But a dispute with his closest rival in the primary, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, has overshadowed news from his well-attended campaign stops.
