STEPHEN McGOWAN: For Michael Beale the challenges of managing Rangers are multiple. Few are as pressing or critical as ensuring Alfredo Morelos is fit and ...
Making his first appearance for the first team since a late cameo in the Champions League defeat to Ajax in November, young midfielder Alex Lowry was a middle man in the move which saw Barisic swing in a cross for Morelos to peel off and bury the first goal with his head. A third goal was pretty much in the post. Showing signs of having his hunger and mojo back Morelos might have made it 3-0 before half-time when a through ball was brilliantly backheeled into the path of the opening goalscorer by Malik Tillman. In contrast, the replacement of Morelos moments later was unplanned and, with Celtic up next, untimely. Connor Shields, leading the line in the absence of the under-the-weather Kevin van Veen, won the break of the ball against Ben Davies on the the halfway line and got to the ball ahead of Allan McGregor as the Rangers keeper raced from his line. After a spell of treatment and Colombian’s fifth goal of the season in only his fourth league start, Rangers supporters must hope it’s nothing serious. It was to be sure which defender the ball came off last. There were times when the Scotland man looked like a nervous trialist, lacking his normal assurance. Morelos scored against Hibs in Beale’s first game in charge and repeated the feat here before limping gingerly from the fray after treatment with 19 minutes to play. Rangers defenders prevented a clean strike at goal from the scrambling striker and, minutes later, Ibrox held its breath once more when Malik Tillman was booked for a trip on Stuart McKinstrey dangerously close to the 18 yard line. For Michael Beale the challenges of managing Rangers are multiple. It’s been some months since the Colombian felt like a figurehead around Ibrox.
The Ibrox side registered a 3-0 victory at Ibrox with goals from Alfredo Morelos, Connor Goldson and Malik Tillman.
His side started well, managing to keep their hosts away from the final third for longer than they would've liked, in the first period. Goldson's second, headed in from a corner, appeared to take the shackles off and, for a spell, there was a glimpse of what Beale's Rangers could be all about on a more consistent basis. The pair were heavily involved in the opening goal, with Lowry holding his position and then helping the ball on for Barisic to deliver directly onto Morelos’ head. If Beale is to turn Rangers into a formidable attacking force once more, the American will almost certainly be his key man. Beale's comments pre-match about how there should only three points between the teams caused a predictable stir, but the general thrust of his point was Rangers have not been consistent enough. A fourth win on the trot under their new manager means Rangers welcome their city rivals to Ibrox apply some real pressure.
Alfredo Morelos limped off after scoring in a 3-0 defeat of Motherwell while Aaron Mooy scored his first goals for Celtic in win at Hibernian.
Just seconds after Saints captain Mark O’Hara was sent off for a second booking Cristian Montano fired Livingston in front in the 56th minute. Daizen Maeda missed a sitter before scoring a glorious effort in the 36th minute and Hibs missed two good chances before Mooy scored a penalty just before the hour. The home team lost Scott Pittman to a straight red card for a challenge on Keanu Baccus in the 24th minute.

Hammell has been firefighting since coming in as boss at the start of the season with injuries hampering his efforts with a thin squad at his disposal, and he'll be hoping a couple of fresh faces can help alleviate the stress on his lot. Against Motherwell, they still had moments of concern at the back and with the odd slack pass, but Borna Barisic and Connor Goldson provided a fairly solid base, while Alfredo Morelos is starting to click once more. While Michael Beale described his team as a work in progress pre-match, the man who once stood on the Ibrox touchline next to Steven Gerrard has stabilised the Rangers ship and garnered momentum going into Monday's meeting with Celtic.
Plus, the Rangers have four young starters that don't, at least for now, have a spot in the rotation — Glenn Otto, Dane Dunning, Spencer Howard and Cole Ragans.
The standard is starting to shift, subtly. The five-man rotation has been the standard now for decades. If the Rangers had attempted to employ a sixth starter last season, it might have been a pitcher like Taylor Hearn, who struggled in that role but later exceled after he was moved to the bullpen. The Astros’ rotation led all teams in rotation fWAR (12.9) and innings (684 1/3), ranked second in ERA (3.10) and fourth in WPA (6.2). The Padres’ rotation ranked second in innings (667), third in K/9 (9.2), seventh in fWAR (10.5) and 10th in ERA (3.78). Four-man rotations persisted into the 1970s, even as most teams shifted to the five-man rotation. In the Rangers’ case, it could be someone like Eovaldi, who was an All-Star just a season ago. Of course, winning is the ultimate trend-setter, and the Houston Astros used a six-man rotation during their World Series run last season. The Rangers currently use it in their minor league system. deGrom, Odorrizi, Heaney and Gray each spent at least two months on the injured list. Plus, there’s a significant amount of talent in the minors, led by Jack Leiter, Kumar Rocker, Cole Winn and Owen White. Eovaldi spent more than a month on the injured list.

Worryingly, the Colombian striker was stopped soon after. As a result, Rangers remain nine points behind Celtic, while Motherwell slips to tenth.
Rangers have hardly proved rocksteady on their feet as they have racked up four straight victories under Michael Beale.
A sweeping move in which Kent sashayed to feed Alex Lowry, led to the opening before the ball was shuttled to Borna Barisic. As with Ryan Kent, the Colombian cuts a more potent figure under a coach whose trust in him stretches back years, to Beale’s influence in the Steven Gerrard era. Beale said as much himself pre-match as he lamented the slip-ups prior to his Ibrox return that have allowed Celtic to have the plumpest of nine-point cushions at the cinch Premiership summit.

Rangers enjoyed their most comfortable win yet under Michael Beale with a 3-0 victory over Motherwell to set up nicely an Old Firm showdown.
Then came a clutch of substitutes for both sides but it was earlier Well replacement Van Veen who had the ball in the Rangers net only for VAR to confirm offside. Five minutes after the interval a toe-poke from Lowry after Kelly had failed to deal with a Barisic corner was cleared off the line by Callum Slattery. Just before the break a sweeping Gers moved ended with Tillman setting up Morelos but Kelly made a fine save from the low drive from 16 yards.
Revitalised Rangers maintain Michael Beale's 100% start going into the Old Firm derby as Motherwell's worrying run in the Scottish Premiership continues.

We got into some great areas but weren't clinical enough. Motherwell manager Steven Hammell: "It was a tough game for us. The defender outjumped Lamie, and a combination of the two somehow skewed the ball over Kelly and it skidded in off the underside of the bar. Borna Barisic was afforded acres of space to swing in a ball from the left on 13 minutes. A flurry of corners also offered early hope. I think everybody can see that," said Beale afterwards when asked if a gap exists between both Old Firm clubs.
The Rangers manager is setting high standards at Ibrox and knows his new team have some way to go to match them.
[Aberdeen](https://theathletic.com/football/team/aberdeen-fc/) also found too much joy when it came to robbing Rangers of possession and being able to run at the heart of the defence. “The team I left (last November) had lost one in 52 in the league and they have lost one in 48 at home. [James Tavernier](https://theathletic.com/football/player/james-tavernier-33XzVeplAvaEkpvz/) then let the ball go under his foot and out for a throw, Davies scuffed several passes and [Malik Tillman](https://theathletic.com/football/player/malik-tillman-9MtrN2gY99U0MrgV/) miscontrolled an easy pass which saw him given a yellow card for taking down [Connor Shields](https://theathletic.com/football/player/connor-shields-ko6pAjViHS7IPcNQ/) on the edge of the box. With so many players high and wide to create room in the centre of the pitch, Aberdeen have three players inside Rangers’ shape ahead of the ball. Everything aside, we needed to win the four games and we have won them. to the other team or out of play so we’re mot getting the rhythm we need. We need to work on it as it isn’t the kind of thing I expected us to do. “The fans want that too and I can feel that in them as well. “We open up like we used to but we’re turning the ball over really sloppily. Right now I would take results over performances but I know, over time, that we surely have to play better. “It wasn’t free-flowing, it wasn’t what I wanted it to be but I don’t think it’s an effort thing. That’s the concern as it is leaving us vulnerable when we turn the ball over.
There was surely something else at work beyond refreshing honesty in the Rangers manager's critical appraisal of his team in their 3-0 win at home to ...
Beale is certainly not prepared to see the efforts of a team he has turned into a winning one over the past three weeks through rose-tinted spectacles. Quite the charge sheet only five days out from a derby when the degree of difficulty for his scrabbling-through team is ramped up to the max. It was arresting to hear Michael Beale’s candour over Rangers’ myriad deficiencies in the wake of a bringing up a quartet of league successes across his Ibrox tenure.
Eovaldi is the last piece in a five-man rotation built entirely on the free-agent market. Jacob deGrom, Jon Gray, Martin Perez, Andrew Heaney and Eovaldi were ...
The point here is this: If you don’t draft and develop solid pitching, you will pay a high price. Stroman, worth 2.6 last season, has a shot to finish as the best investment. Led by Lester and Yu Darvish, the other 13 signed deals worth a combined $590.5 million over 38 seasons. The results were poor, with Jon Lester and John Lackey as notable exceptions to the rule. But even Lester delivered an average of only 2.1 WAR over the course of his six-year, $155 million deal. The high-risk investment in pitching is what a team does when it does a miserable job of identifying, acquiring and developing pitching. Jacob deGrom, Jon Gray, Martin Perez, Andrew Heaney and Eovaldi were acquired with $323.65 million in commitments from the ownership group that a year ago signed two shortstops (Corey Seager and Marcus Semien) for a combined $510 million. But the Cubs have produced only four pitchers delivering 1.0 WAR seasons for them since Epstein replaced Jim Hendry as the top baseball man. expense of $15.9 million per every 1.0 WAR. Those four (Justin Steele, Keegan Thompson, Brandon Hughes and Adbert Alzolay) should all play roles in 2023. Think about that for a minute. As much as the unwillingness of ownership to pay market prices to extend cornerstone players, it was the failure to draft and develop pitchers that led to the decision to rebuild a team that had gone to the postseason five times in six seasons.
Earlier the Rangers opened the vault for free-agent Jacob deGrom, who joined Jon Gray, Andrew Heaney, Martín Pérez and Jake Odorizzi in a potentially formidabe ...
I think he's going to set a great example for a lot of our young guys that are going to be coming along with the other pitchers that we have on staff.” That ranked in the second percentile among all pitchers and Kluber ranked 136th in fastball velocity out of the 140 pitchers with at least 100 innings. I think that he really fits all the criteria that we look for that we want our pitchers to be. That’s both a lot to juggle and a necessary assemblage of depth, considering the health records of the team's top starters. Eovaldi, though, came out ahead on park-adjusted figures, and his underlying metrics (notably, his strikeout rate) point to a stronger pitcher closer to the level of Chris Bassitt, who signed for $21 million per year. But I think that we're prepared to deal with that based on the depth that we have in our rotation.” Yet it appears to have been enough to give the Redbirds a strong offseason grade, as the roster looks solid. It's the only move that as of now figures to impact the big league depth chart in a significant way. [ESPN.com](http://ESPN.com): “The Cardinals are rarely aggressive when it comes to a quantity of moves to add players from outside the organization. Yes, if you do the math, that's four new starting pitchers to go alongside Perez and Jon Gray -- for a rotation that ranked 25th in the majors in 2022 with a 4.63 ERA -- worse than the Tigers or Pirates. So we're confident in understanding the player, the person, to make up the injury history so that we can put each player on a program that's going to give them the best chance to stay healthy. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy isn’t a fan of the six-man rotation, but all of those starters have injury histories.

The likes of Tom Lawrence, Ianis Hagi and Filip Helander have all endured stints in the treatment room, as Beale looks to mount a title charge with a half-fit squad. Across his two spells with the club, Davis has Of course, Beale is no stranger to success at Ibrox, having been a part of Steven Gerrard’s coaching team when Rangers lifted their 55th league title in 2020/21. An injury crisis has plagued Beale’s start as Rangers boss, with 11 first-team players absent for December’s victory over Ross County. Wins against Hibernian, Motherwell, Ross County and Aberdeen have provided Beale with a 100% start, as the 42-year-old plots a second-half-of-the-season revival at Ibrox. Big performances throughout the centre of the team will be key if Michael Beale is to emerge victorious.
The Colombian has not played well for the majority of the season, and lost his place to Colak until injury afforded him another chance. McGregor returned for the visit of the Steelmen on Wednesday night, and he also kept the opposition out in a comfortable win. The quality of strikers he and his defensive colleagues will be tasked with keeping shackled will take a big jump now, however. Jon McLaughlin wore the gloves in Dingwall and helped his side to a first clean sheet under Beale. [McGregor](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/all-about/allan-mcgregor) missed the win at Ross County last week through illness, just a few days after he didn’t cover himself in glory for Aberdeen’s equaliser at Pittodrie. This isn't the first time Gerard Gallant has tried to send a message to Alexis Lafrenière.
“If it’s going to be a guy that is strong down low and take pucks to the net then that’s what he has to do consistently. “He has to decide what type of player he is going to be,” the pro scout said. There could be a decision on Lafrenière, but if things continue along the current path, it may be a decision of whether or not to keep the former No. Lafrenière had every right to expect more opportunity when he came in as a heralded top pick and also every right to feel disillusioned that those opportunities haven’t presented themselves through two-plus years. Even as the Senators have bumbled their way through Stützle’s first two-plus NHL seasons, he’s established himself as a go-to player in Ottawa and a big part of the Sens’ future — the team signed him to an eight-year extension worth $8.35-million per that kicks in next season. The Rangers obviously still believe that Lafrenière can be the player who was a no-doubt No. Lafrenière has 17 points in 36 games while playing 15:01 a game and getting scraps of power play time. Not saying he’s going to be there tomorrow. There have been fits and starts of that player, but nothing consistent. Coming into the final season of his entry-level deal in 2022-23 and coming off an impactful playoff run, the “He doesn’t seem to accomplish much out there with or without the puck,” said one NHL scout whose coverage area includes the Rangers. Lafrenière had 11 goals over his last 35 games and then the sort of postseason that reminded everyone why he was the top pick two years earlier.
Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant confirmed the decision on Thursday morning. Sammy Blais will dress in Lafreniere's place.
