Alchemy of Souls – Season 2 Episode 5 Recap & Review (The Review Geek)

Episode 5 of Alchemy of Souls season 2 starts with Yul desperate to know what's inside his body. He speaks to So-yi and demands the truth.

Instead, Ho-gyeong blasts her with energy and tells the others to keep her to the annex. And as the pair end up kissing together inside, Dang-gu and the other soldiers – who had earlier shown up and noticed a second pair of shoes outside – happen to be listening and immediately start cheering and applauding. Likewise, it would seem that Dang-gu and Cho-yeon are making amends now, while the situation with Yul looks like it’s going to take a turn for the worst before this season is done. So-Yi speaks to Ho-gyeong and tries to find a solution to her blood parasite situation. He wants to use the ice stone and even offers to grant her desperate wish in the process. While they do, we find out that Jin-mu is actually the one who has been messing about with the wells and in charge of causing droughts. However, no one else knows that he has the blood parasite and he asks her to keep it a secret while he tries to find a solution. Jang-uk and Bu-yeon next come face to face with the Queen in a planned meeting. After complaining to those in the palace of a headache, she goes missing, sending the whole place into raptures to try and find her, led by Maidservant Kim. Given he doesn’t know much about her, he’s drawing a blank and deliberates over whether to go to Jinyowon. She admits that he has a blood parasite inside him and the medicine was supposed to be keeping him safe. Only, he didn’t take that because he was convinced she was trying to play him.

Concurrently, the Crown Prince wishes to end his working relationship with Jin Mu when realising the Gwanju still covets the ice stone, and wants to go as far as taking the fire bird for himself. As a bloodied So-i devilishly laughs, wanting Ho-gyeong to ask others if they know Bu-yeon is really Naksu, Jang Uk walks alongside his partner. Still, the monster hunter’s discontent wavers when Bu-yeon explains she was just trying to comfort her husband, and see if he had “space” for her in his heart. The swindler had asked for information on how to get rid of the blood parasite given by U-tak in exchange for the truth about Bu-yeon’s identity, but Jinyowon’s leader wanted none of it. While Maidservant Kim shouts at Jang Uk for rejecting the chance to reconcile with Ho-gyeong, So-i finds herself locked in the annex for overstepping the mark. Lee Cheol isn’t concerned by the monster hunter’s rebuttal, however, knowing his disinterest in getting involved with Jin family affairs is irrelevant when he’s “walking the same path of faith” alongside Bu-yeon. Concurrently, Bu-yeon belatedly thanks Jang Uk for removing her tracking thread, vows to never return home, and promises to stay by his side at a suitable distance. Thus, Jang Uk gets frustrated, confronting his partner to the point he suggests she can be used simply as a “substitute” for his true love. After Dang-gu tenderly patches things up with Cho-yeon, who accepts the gift of diamonds and shows Songrim’s leader that she has kept hold of the charm that “helps two become lovers” for the past three years, we watch as Park Jin tries to convince Ho-gyeong of the protective relationship her daughter has with Jang Uk. Next, Jang Uk goes looking for Bu-yeon, who is said to be missing and ill. Still, Seo Yul isn’t too fussed about this so long as his blood parasite secret is safe, and is insistent he has only returned to “settle things one last time.” As So-i nervously confesses that Seo Yul has a blood parasite inside him, wanting to take it back for herself, the genius mage reveals it’s eating away at the core of his energy.

Elsewhere, Jang Uk and Bu-yeon are making their way to Jinyowon when her words once again put Jang Uk in a daze as he is reminded of Mu-deok. He threatens him by revealing the truth to Jang Uk and Go Won is unable to do anything against him. Meanwhile, Jang Uk puts forth his wish to stay the night at the Jin household and later asks for Bu-yeon’s help to enter Jinyowon to confirm the firebird’s presence. But facing her rejection of her request, she asks her to bring Jang Uk with her to Jinyowon for a visit. Bu-yeon then leaves but comes across Jang Uk who refuses to go to Jinyowon thinking that it is the same as what master Lee had told him about. Meanwhile, Bu-yeon thanks him for getting rid of the tracking thread for her and promises to stay by his side at a certain distance while clasping their hands together. He then leaves and finds Bu-yeon playing with the turtle that the crown prince asked to have moved. Jang Uk signals Bu-yeon to leave and her way of leaving amuses him while only adding fuel to the queen’s anger. The topic then shifts to Jang Uk and Bu-yeon and he can’t help but wonder about the fate of these two. As he puts forth his wish to protect both Bu-yeon and Jinyowon, the queen gets furious by this and mocks him for trying to get his hands on everything good. He then changes to the topic of finally getting a peaceful sleep after a long time when Bu-yeon reveals to him that it is because her powers have driven the wraiths away which is why he has been filled with warmth. This shocks So Yi as she asks him to go to Jinyowon for help, while Seo Yul confirms that Jin Mu had spread the rumours about Naksu’s return.

Similarly, it looks like Dang-gu and Cho-yeon are making amends now, while the situation with Yul looks like it’s going to get worse before this season ends. As we know, Cheongbugwan (and specifically Jin-Mu) are also looking for the ice stone. The standout bits here largely come from the supporting characters rather than Jang-uk and Bu-yeon, who continue to drag their heels with this whole amnesia plot. Instead, Ho-gyeong throws her energetically and tells the others to keep her in her annex. So-Yi talks to Ho-gyeong and tries to find a solution to her blood parasite situation. Laughing in disbelief, he informs her that he was the one who nursed her back to health. He is conflicted and continues to ponder what this all means. Oh, and she is told that she will pass that message on to those she is intriguing with herself as well. Jang-uk and Bu-yeon then come face to face with the Queen at a planned meeting. She realizes that she wanted to use Jinyowon to summon Naksu and hinder him. After complaining to those in the palace about a headache, she disappears, causing the entire place to get excited to try and find her, led by the servant Kim. Only he didn’t take that because he was convinced that she was trying to play him.

The rogue asks for information on how to get rid of the blood virus that U-tak is giving him in order to find the truth about Bu-yeon’s identity, but the Jinyowon leader wants nothing to do with it. Once again, the monster hunter’s unease is shaken when Bu-yeon reveals that he is just trying to comfort her husband and see if he has “room” for her in her heart.
