In the piece, Luck explained what he had previously only privately admitted to himself and a handful of others: the problem with being an N.F.L. And yet, set against that, are the sports themselves: the display of skills, of physical and mental mastery, of the satisfactions of coöperation and competition, of joy, pure and simple. The explanations for the phenomenon are murky and manifold: a reflection of better opportunities for some and impossible burdens for others. The effects of social media, the [Carlos Alcaraz](https://www.newyorker.com/sports/sporting-scene/what-makes-carlos-alcaraz-so-good), the new No. game in the fall of 2022 would look similar to a picture of a game in the fall of 2019; it can appear as though nothing has changed. In the end, Shaw made the decision to leave. Stanford’s defense, formerly one of the best in the country, became one of the worst, ranked outside the top hundred. Shaw’s father, Willie, had been a coach at Stanford, and David had been a wide receiver there, in the nineteen-nineties; he was also on the basketball and track teams.

Looking Back on the Year of Sportswashing (Sports Illustrated)

With the Winter Olympics in Beijing, the World Cup in Qatar and the emergence of LIV Golf, 2022 was the year of reputation laundering through sports.

The next World Cup is here in the U.S. I'm just not sure that people watching the World Cup are saying yes, this is a place I would like to go on my next vacation. I think the expected revenue from this World Cup is $7 billion. The 2014 Winter Olympics were also in Russia. And so the amount of money it would need to bring in through the tourism side door would need to be a lot. The Winter Olympics earlier this year were in Beijing. JW: $220 billion to build the infrastructure for this World Cup. I don't think this was done for the 300,000 citizens. So when I look at that, I think: Why did you have to go for the World Cup? [NBA]’s media rights will hit the open market, and the league will find a ton of interest from traditional media companies like Fox and NBC, and digital players like Apple and Amazon. The College Football Playoff expands from four to 12 teams in 2024-25, but ESPN holds the rights to the semis and championship through 2026. Look, also, for the NBA to court younger fans with a short-form digital or social media deal where, say, [YouTube]gets close-to-live highlight rights and the rights to sell the fourth quarter of games on a pay-per-view basis. But circuit executives will decide that a digital deal would put too much pressure on team sponsors that need the biggest audience available. Discovery Sports’ exclusive window runs to the end of the year, which means the NBA will have to wait until 2024 to get a deal done. That will create an opening for [Amazon], which already has a taste of the NFL’s popularity through “Thursday Night Football.” Amazon will complete a deal by the Super Bowl that does not include a stake in the league’s media assets. But the business still will see a lot of activity.
