James Cameron's Avatar was one of the highest-grossing films of all time, and the much-awaited sequel of the film is finally here.
In addition to the original version, dubbed versions, including Malayalam, Telegu, Hindi, and others, are also available. The film also won three Oscars for cinematography, visual effects, and art direction. James Cameron’s Avatar 2, Avatar: The Way of Water, finally hit the theatres on Friday, 16th December, but as soon as that happened, the film’s pirated version also started being available online.
Avatar The Way Of Water movie review: Avatar 2 is just stunning in the parts it skims along the water, dives deep, rolls around joyously, keeping up with ...
Cameron adds a heady dose of tribalism in ‘Avatar 2’s’ mix of saving the environment and the rapaciousness of humans, leading us to ask questions about identity and belonging. In between moving everything along briskly, is a touching thread belonging to the younger Na’vi boy and his relationship with a gentle giant of the deep, called the Tulkun: in the way the two support each other against a formidable foe, the boy comes of age, and the creature, cast outside his clan, finds redemption. The importance of the family unit is also emphasised over and over, with a bit of teenage angst thrown in, safely unsexualised, because Cameron is clearly making a family first movie for families all over the world. ‘Avatar 2’ is just stunning in the parts it skims along the water, dives and rolls around joyously, keeping up with the incredible creatures who live in the deep: the Na’vi family learns that the way of the water is to become one with it. As one of the Metkayina people (Kate Winslett has a small part as the Metkayina chief ‘s wife, who takes her time to embrace the outsiders) tells the Na’vi family, as they begin finding their sea-legs: the way of the water has no beginning and no end, water connects everything. Apart from the big themes of environmentalism and colonisation, ‘Avatar’ also sounded the gong for how each of us are connected to the other, whether we live on the land, or the sea.

Their work remains the core of this epic sci-fi feature, which transforms the computer-generated world into a hyper-realistic one. The ace actor adds charm to the screen with her performance. He has penned the story with a talented team of writers, including Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. The new underwater motion capture system adds to the technological advancement this time. Trust me, the 3-hour-long journey showers something new with an abundance of visual treats from Cameron’s directorial Avatar 2. The more explored universe of Cameron’s creative vision this time takes us on an underwater journey.

Avatar: The Way of Water needs to make $1.49 billion to clinch the top spot for 2022, and it There are a multitude of reasons why it cost so much money and took so much time to make the second Avatar movie. That puts it ahead of early projections for Top Gun: Maverick, which currently ranks as the most successful movie this year. Reviews aside, it remains to be seen how the movie will perform and if it will reach the heights of its predecessor. “For the sequels, Cameron wanted to use the same motion capture tech for actors while they were submerged underwater, an unheard-of feat that required years to engineer a solution.” Cameron also decided to film the second and third movies together, which took three years to complete. This, on top of the time it took for post-production, all adds up to the 13-year wait. But if its current rating of 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes is any indication, a majority ultimately did enjoy the sequel for the visual spectacle that it is. Domestic box office projections are strong and reviews sway positive in general, but the coming days will offer a better sense of whether it’s on track to meet its lofty ambitions.

After 13 years, the sequel to James Cameron's epic has finally arrived in cinemas.
Spider also drags Quaritch to the surface, but although he has saved him he refuses to stick with him and abandons his father in favour of returning to the Sullys. There is certainly a lot more to explore regarding the mysteries of Kiri, while Quaritch remains at large and seems unlikely to give up on his antagonistic tendencies towards the Na'vi any time soon. Lo'ak goes to warn Payakan of the impending threat and his siblings follow him, after which they have an argument and end up coming under attack from Quaritch and his men. Anyway, Quaritch has been continuing his attempts to hunt down Jake and has teamed up with a captain called Mick Scoresby who is hunting the tulkun so he can extract a very valuable substance that apparently stops humans from ageing. The film begins with the news that the sky people, made up of recombinant Quaritch and his army, are back on Pandora with a dual mission. Amongst the ensuing havoc, Tuk is carried away by a current on the now flooding ship, and Neytiri and Kiri pursue her. Instead, she plays a Na'vi teenager called Kiri – who it is revealed very early on in the film is the biological daughter of Grace's avatar. Although this is put down to epilepsy by medical experts, it seems to be something a little more significant. [subscribe now](http://radiotimes.com/magazine-subscription?utm_term=evergreen-article). But once again, this does not mean that James Cameron has decided to retcon previous events. On the one hand, they want to make the moon a new home for humans – what with Earth dying and all – but in order to do so they first need to track down and kill the leader of the Na'vi insurgency, Jake Sully. Weaver actually does also make a few appearances as Grace in the film – in both a couple of flashback scenes and in one sequence in which Kiri visits a Spirit Tree which allows her to communicate with her ancestors.

He’s the most nondescript of the three, with turquoise skin and short, curly hair. A lot of The Way of Water focuses on the younger generation beyond the Sully kiddos. He’s cocky and definitely plays the role of the bully. The last notable reef clan kid isn’t explicitly related to Reya and Aonung, though he does hang out with them a lot. She’s a bit of a dreamer, which causes some of the reef clan teens to make fun of her. Kiri is the only one of the Sully siblings who does not keep her hair in braids. Most of Lo’ak’s arc revolves around how he feels like an outsider in his own family, which is exacerbated by how much he feels like an outsider around the reef-dwelling Na’vi his family visits. He’s had a smattering of small roles in movies and TV, including a very tiny role as “Kid on Bike” in Avengers: Endgame. The two of them have a whole brood of kids, plus a human tagalong. It’s all fun and family bonding until about halfway through the movie, when you realize the names of all the kids blurred by at the beginning of the movie, and it’s hard to tell who’s who after that. [Avatar: The Way of Water](https://www.polygon.com/reviews/23506051/avatar-2-way-water-review-james-cameron), is full of blue cat-alien people known as the Na’vi. "Avatar: The Way of Water" lives up to box office expectations, already closing in on $100 million worldwide as it heads into opening weekend.
We can look back at The Terminator, at Aliens, at Titanic, at Avatar, and now at Avatar: The Way of Water and see the same mistaken assessments and the same eagerness to see Cameron and his films collapse amid a pile of hubris and humiliation, and every time the films rose to the occasion and exceeded expectations. And this all raises a big important point: all of the years of talk about Avatar lacking social footprint, lacking staying power, lacking public awareness or interest, and not having much to justify its existence on merit are washed away as easily as sand on a beach. The core audience who will revisit the film over and over in theaters are now gearing up to arrive. Avatar: The Way of Water is still on course for a $180-200 million domestic opening, and a massive $500-600 million global bow. In an interesting side note, even the World Cup and the arrival of Avatar 2 didn’t suppress Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s ability to hold well as it heads into the weekend. James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to 2009’s chart-topping Avatar has arrived, and early numbers point to another major box office result and widespread acclaim for Avatar: The Way of Water.

Avatar: The Way of Water introduces Sigourney Weaver's new Na'vi character Kiri, but leaves a major question about her unsolved by the end.
Could it be that Eywa is actually behind the birth of Kiri, using her as a way of keeping Grace alive? However, the Metkayina clan believe it's down to something more spiritual and is a result of Kiri's connection to Eywa. What is clear is that Kiri does have a strong connection to Eywa, saying that she can hear and feel her. It's unclear if Grace's avatar was pregnant with Kiri at the time of the failed procedure and we actually don't even know who Kiri's father is. Before her death, she did tell Jake she saw Eywa who is the guiding force of life on Pandora with the Na'vi believing that Eywa keeps the ecosystem in perfect balance. She's the biological daughter of the avatar Dr Grace Augustine, Sigourney Weaver's character in the first movie.
One of the most intriguing characters in Avatar: The Way of Water is Kiri, the adopted Na'vi daughter of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña).
In Weaver’s interview, she also talks about her adopted family and the “mother” of sorts that she has in Dr. So she’s the best of Grace, without the smoking.” But even more interesting in Weaver’s answer is that Cameron and the team have filmed Avatar 3 and parts of Avatar 4, meaning that we probably won’t get answers about Kiri’s conception and potentially who her father is, until Avatar 5. While there are some answers given about Kiri’s existence in Avatar: The Way of Water, there are some things about Kiri that even Weaver doesn’t know about yet. 'Avatar: The Way of Water' jumps in after Jake Sully and Neytiri build their family. Here's who you need to know.
Regardless of their composition, Jake and Neytiri are willing to do whatever it takes to keep them safe. The biggest change is that Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) have settled down and started a family, who will become key contributors to the sequel's plot. Now, his stewardship of Pandora is personal. He’s protecting his biological children, the child of one of his closest friends from his human days, and a human who’s found a home with the Na’vi, just like he did. Regardless, Kiri is mysterious and possibly has special powers, and considering she’s also played by Sigourney Weaver, her mother’s memory is alive throughout the film. Your guess is as good as ours.

By the end of The Way of Water, and especially with the death of his brother Neteyam, it’s pretty clear that Lo’ak, middle son of Jake and Neytiri, has a huge role to play in the future of this franchise. By the end of all of this, we’d imagine he’s going to either be the one in charge, or the one who ruins it all. He was the first of his family to befriend a Tulkun and has proven himself to be brave and worthy. Thankfully, it doesn’t come to that, and Quaritch lets Kiri go, but there is obvious tension between Spider and the Sullys later. Spider then goes back to the Sullys and Quaritch goes back to—we don’t know where—but you have to think that he’s now a changed man. Spider reciprocates by taking his father’s body out of the water and saving his life. A huge moment in The Way of Water is when Na’vi Quaritch reveals his true feelings for his human son, Spider. Arguably the most heartbreaking scene in a film filled with heartbreaking scenes is the capture and poaching of one of the Tulkun, the whale-like creatures who have a symbiotic relationship with the Metkayina. Since that does not happen in The Way of Water, we’d imagine it’s a big storyline in the upcoming films. Another huge revelation in The Way of Water is that not only are the humans back on Pandora, but they’re also more ambitious this time around. Arguably the biggest mystery in The Way of Water that’s mentioned but not addressed is Kiri’s father. [Avatar: The Way of Water](https://gizmodo.com/avatar-2-movie-review-the-way-of-water-james-cameron-1849876980) is the rare film where we know, without a doubt, there will be at least one sequel.

I tweaked the new version that Austin Kleon came up with that replaced the fourth image of the man sitting up with a smile in his face (#4) with the man sitting back in his chair expressionless (#3). But then I would have had to watch it again to pen this review, and that would be . Ultimately, Avatar: The Way Of Water is just not all that good or cerebral or exciting. I would have loved it if this were an adventure movie, with Jake and his family heading out into the wide, wild world and facing struggles that had nothing to do with the human colonizers. But the bad guys are coming with their guns and their bombs and their bombs and their guns. But even if that is how kids in the US talk in 2022—it isn’t, not to this degree—it makes no sense on an alien planet. And the Navi—a crude analog for the indigenous people of our own world—remain the Noble Savage trope they were in the last film, only less interesting now. It’s a retread of the first film. I didn’t see Avatar: The Way Of Water on an IMAX 3D screen because the nearest IMAX to where I live is at the Grand Canyon and they don’t show this kind of movie on that screen (even if they did it’s being renovated until next Spring). It’s arrogant and self-indulgent and I think the novelty that made that okay in the first film has worn off for audiences, or at least it has for me. Some of the fights—while too long—were exciting and action-packed and had cool special effects. - That’s the best way I can describe Way Of Water.

Avatar 2 is perfectly enjoyable without the context of the first film, and there are clearly, as you can see above, some questions you might have that even the first film doesn’t answer. In The Way of Water, she oversees RDA activity on Pandora, activity she blames Sully for hindering; it’s she who calls for his execution. In the comic, Socorro dies during battle and, after the Na’vi defeat the humans, Miles is too small to return to earth in a cryopod, so he is left behind and raised alongside the few human stragglers and the Na’vi on Pandora. Edie Falco, who plays General Frances Ardmore, was not in the first film, but was introduced in the comics. Miles “Spider” Socorro (Jack Champion) is a retconned character who was first seen in the comic Though he wasn’t in the first film, the comic explains that Spider was born on the RDA colony base to Quaritch and Paz Socorro, an RDA pilot who never appears in Avatar 1. And if she died, how did the circumstances allow her to give birth to her 14-year-old daughter, Kiri (also played by Sigourney Weaver), in Avatar 2? In the first movie, Jake Sully was a paraplegic former Marine who agreed to join the Avatar Program, part of the Resources Development Administration (RDA), an incredibly powerful non-governmental human organization that wanted to mine Pandora for “unobtanium”—an energy-conducting mineral that had become highly valuable, given the depletion of Earth’s natural resources. Though avatars are remotely controlled by humans, it is possible—with the help of the Na’vi who can channel their deity, Eywa, through the Tree of Souls—for a human to transfer their consciousness permanently into an avatar body. Avatars are used to help humans explore Pandora (a moon in the Alpha Centauri star system) without breathing equipment, as the atmosphere on Pandora is toxic to humans.

“He’s a rebel, sort of a guy who gets in trouble and a screw-up in that way,” Dalton Filip Geljo plays Aonung, a young male hunter and free diver of the Metkayina who happens to be Tonowari and Ronal’s son. “She does not see herself as the youngest,” the actor told Variety. “The family might be protective of her, but she sees that as underestimation. “Even in the face of grave danger, and with an unborn baby on board, she still joins her people and fights for what she holds most dear: her family and their home.” “To get to see yourself in the film… “But we were really led by a terrific team of professionals who were with us every step of the way, making sure that we were as safe as one can possibly be when one is doing a knife fight 25 feet below the surface. James Cameron makes the grand finale of Avatar: The Way of Water into a visually dazzling victory lap full of easter eggs and homages…
When the rest of the Sullys go down with the ship, with the parents resigning themselves to a watery grave just as Ed Harris did in The Abyss, an almost otherworldly force of nature is summoned and a glowing sentience is manifested by Kiri. For in both True Lies and Avatar 2, it all comes down to the baddie kidnapping the hero’s little girl. The one to embody this in Avatar: The Way of Water is unsurprisingly Neytiri. However, what they find at the bottom of the ocean is something altogether more powerful: a sentient godlike race of aliens that the film’s scientists call NTIs (non-terrestrial intelligence). As bitter as it is losing Neteyam, it’s a bit of a gift for Saldaña who was mostly relegated to the background of Avatar 2 as the next generation of Na’vi took centerstage. The reason Jake and Neytiri, and for that matter the remainder of their biological children, are alive at the very end though is more of a nod to another movie: The Abyss (1989). Of course the most obvious easter egg in the Avatar 2 finale is how so much of it resembles Titanic. Before Jake and Neytiri learn of Kiri’s kidnapping, they have already entered the deepest shadow of grief; they have suffered the death of a child. Quaritch (Stephen Lang) has slaughtered the gentle whale-like creatures of Pandora’s deep seas in order to bring the coastal Na’vi out for a fight—and to lure Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) to his death. Because don’t be fooled, the ending of Avatar: The Way of Water is a visceral callback to nearly every other movie Cameron ever made. Perhaps more importantly to the industry, too, they were all magnificent hits with Titanic and Avatar each spending a minimum of nine consecutive years at the top of the “Highest Grossing Movies of All Time” list. Now, it's time to strap your 3-D glasses on, hold your breath, and plunge into the wet and wild world of Avatar: The Way of Water. Of course, the next-best solution is to ship a bunch of military personnel out to a foreign planet to forcibly steal their natural resources. They all have tails and long hair, which can be used to connect to animals and the neural network of the entire planet’s biosphere. It allows humans to neuralink to Avatar alien bodies and use them to interact with the Na’vi on Pandora. Pandora is a big blue planet from director James Cameron's imagination, where everything looks like a much-better version of the best tropical vacation you’ve ever taken—except the atmosphere will kill you if you try to raw dog it without an oxygen mask. If you have blocked out a lot of memories from back then—including, maybe, some key Avatar plot points—all you need to do is trust me and read a quick refresher. Would you even recognize yourself if you saw the 2009 version of yourself again? Young and naive, blissfully unaware of all the things that were to come.

In earlier interviews promoting the sequel, Cameron indicated it would need to gross in the $2 billion range to be considered a success. The groundbreaking film went on to become the top-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office with $2.92 billion-plus in ticket sales. Another major challenge: The film’s running time is a hefty three hours and 12 minutes, resulting in fewer showtimes (at the same time, it faces almost no competition). Avatar 2 star Stephen Lang discusses the return of Miles Quaritch and why he agreed to become the thing he hated most via the RDA's Recom program.
What he has learned is that he cannot shape that world according to his desires, the way he wants to do things. If he had survived, would you have had the same faith in him or is it a different situation? Avatar: The Way of Water is playing in theaters nationwide now. He was in a tough spot, just spiritually, it seems to me, at that point. But also, what is something you wanted to do to make us believe that, yes, they are the same people, but he's also not, he's his own being in a sense? He was so big and bad in the first one, and the death seemed so definitive. But obviously, there are changes, and those changes are somewhat mysterious because [of] what it is; it's the DNA, it's the way of water [that] has entered into him, as well. Because he would essentially be agreeing to become the thing that he despised most, so did you ever figure out what his reaction might have been to that? During their conversation, Lang walked us through original Quaritch's likely response to first being asked to participate in the Recom program and if he thinks Recom Quaritch is redeemable. In celebration of The Way of Water’s December 16th theatrical release, Collider’s Perri Nemiroff spoke with Lang about bringing Quaritch, or a version of him, back to the big screen. Given the target on his back, Jake determines it's best for the Sully family to flee the forest of the Omaticaya clan and find safety elsewhere. One of the RDA’s new tactics is to use an elite team of soldiers known as Recombinants, deceased RDA soldiers in avatar bodies.
Avatar 2 sees the return of Colonel Miles Quaritch as a villain reborn - how does he come back in The Way of Water & what is a recombinant?
Recombinants are capable of everything the Na’vi can do: they can bond with the moon’s creatures, and climb and run just as fast. “I think that only adds to his ammunition, to his toolbox. A recombinant is an RDA soldier reborn as an Avatar following their death. He causes all sorts of chaos before watching a video recorded by Quaritch before his original death, explaining what’s happened and why he needs to execute Jake. He has no memory of his death.” So, his memories and DNA were condensed into a tube and sent back to Earth, where his own Avatar was grown and ready to go.

By the time you're in the water, you need to leave that MF in the trailer." It's similar to how the characters themselves describe it in the film: breathing deeply to take control of your heart rate before diving under. Jake Sully (Worthington), now a prime target, flees with Neytiri (Saldana) and the rest of his family to seek refuge with the Metkayina, a tribe of Na'vi whose bodies have adapted to ocean life. James Cameron's long-awaited "Avatar 2" is taking flight at the box office, with competitors projecting a $127 million opening weekend.
Searchlight Pictures’ “The Menu” will round out the top five, projecting a $1.5 million haul in its fifth weekend of release. With very little competition throughout the holidays, “The Way of Water” hopes to mount a similar word-of-mouth driven blockbuster run. It’s also a good deal higher than the $26.7 million opening day that the first “Avatar” landed in 2009, though the sequel arrives with the benefit of Thursday previews and years of anticipation. It’s all eyes on “The Way of Water” as it hopes to mount a bountiful box office run; it isn’t every weekend that theaters receive a sequel to the highest-grossing film ever. Total domestic gross now stands at a solid $30 million for “Violent Night.” Disney and 20th Century Studios’ “The Way of Water” took flight at the box office with a solid $53 million gross from 4,202 locations in its opening day, a figure that includes $17 million in Thursday previews.
A dangerous pandemic surge in China and post-opening weekend advance ticket sales in other markets are changing the course of "Avatar 2," but will it hurt ...
It’s still way too early to say for sure, but my initial gut reaction is that even with long legs and strong holds, the situation in China and threat of that situation spreading even worse infection surges around the globe point to an Avatar 2 finish somewhere between $1.5 billion and $2+/- billion. But the results of ending those efforts at controlling the pandemic spread is an explosion of new cases burning through major cities, which raises the specter of new variants and surges spreading worldwide. Those large numbers of post-opening advance ticket sales position the film for small weekly declines for weeks to come, including a Christmas surge that should also help a few other films like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The USA and other nations are already in the grip of a new pandemic surge, made worse by rising flu infections and other diseases like RSV. In particular, nearly a quarter of advance ticket sales in North America were for post-opening weekend screenings, meaning audiences are aware screenings will be packed in early days and so viewers are choosing to wait in order to secure the best seats and premium theater options. So it’s not at all impossible it could still climb toward $500 million, although it’s a bit of a harder climb at this point.

You may forget that the original Avatar opened with only $77 million, which was hardly all that eye-popping, but what it had was longevity through word of mouth, resulting in wild occurrences like just a 1.8% drop between its first and second weekend. Adjusted for inflation it falls much further down the list to #15, but that elevates another Cameron film, 1997’s Titanic, to #5. While 3D became a fad in the wake of Avatar doing huge box office returns with the tech, no one ever did it as good as that movie, until this new one, of course. As ever, the praise is mainly focused on the visuals, which are out-of-this-world incredible, similar to the first movie which used 3D tech that really has not been seen in the 13 years since. Now, that tech has advanced even further and once again James Cameron makes the argument for 3D movies in theaters. So, when previously fans and critics agreed almost exactly about the film, critics dropped a tiny bit from last time, while audiences seem to like it even more.
