“But...I was able to see how charismatic he was and how easy it was to be drawn in. In one instance he left a job over misconduct allegations when an elderly woman complained that he was not the nurse assigned to her but was continually entering her room to give her injections. The autopsy revealed a lethal level of digoxin in his system. In December 2003, Loughren asked Cullen to meet her at a restaurant and wore a wire. He enlisted in the the Navy shortly after. She was approached by detectives Tim Braun and Danny Baldwin, who were investigating the deaths of a few patients who had high levels of a drug called digoxin, which affects the heart, in their systems. The list was long, sometimes half a dozen in a night. Then, time and time again, Charlie ordered a restock from the pharmacy. After Cullen's arrest, he eventually confessed to 40 murders in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She and Cullen were actually fairly close, working many night shifts in the intensive care unit together, which can be a bonding experience. How much of what is portrayed in the film really happened? Based on a true crime book of the same name by journalist Charles Graeber, the drama stars Eddie Redmayne as Cullen and Jessica Chastain as his co-worker Amy Loughren, who wore a wire to gain evidence that took Cullen down.

Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who wrote the new thriller, on the real-life events that inspired it.

We were walking out, and I said, ‘This is hard,’ and she was like, ‘This isn’t even the hardest things I’ve done this week.’ I said, ‘Well, you did catch a serial killer that one time,’ and she told me, ‘That’s not even the hardest thing I did. “Because you're hamstrung by what actually happened, that makes you have to be more inventive, more creative, and it makes you have to really double down into the essential,” the screenwriter says. “When we were about to go on stage at the Toronto International Film Festival, Amy and I were a bit nervous; it was the first time an audience had watched the film. “She was the person who used her humanity to awaken his,” she says. In The Good Nurse, Redmayne takes a chilling turn as Cullen, while Chastain plays Amy Loughren, another hospital nurse who befriends Cullen before realizing that something is terribly wrong and sets out to stop it. The Good Nurse, the new drama streaming now on Netflix, has all the makings of a classic thriller: There’s a seemingly unstoppable villain, a heroine forced to display incredible bravery, and stakes as high as they can possibly be.

'The Good Nurse' Ending Explained: Friendship Elicits a Deadly ... (Collider.com)

The Good Nurse, starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne, is a haunting drama that ends with a cold, dark conclusion.

Amy goes to lunch with Charlie and wears a wire, but doesn’t manage to get a confession. A slight date error was enough to be considered a breach of contract, and Charlie was terminated. Before the credits roll, we’re given updates on the real-life Amy Loughren and Charles Cullen. Amy agrees to meet with him and requests his handcuffs be removed. Fortunately, Amy is about to get some help on the job, as the hospital hired a man with “tons of experience” and “great recommendations.” This, of course, is none other than Charles Cullen. This minor breach of contract was a convenient way for the hospital (who was withholding information from authorities that would further confirm Charlie's guilt) to get Charlie off their backs. Amy explains to the detectives that a double medication error is incredibly rare, and that she doesn’t believe Charlie has anything to do with it for several reasons. The detectives discover that in 1995 during his time at a hospital in Pennsylvania, Charles was charged with criminal trespassing and harassment for slashing a co-worker’s tires post-breakup. It was also hard for her to believe that someone so loyal and genuinely caring could be capable of such a crime. Amy tells the detectives what she discovered and pleads with them not to reveal her name as the source of the new information because she will get fired. The film’s opening scene thrusts the audience into the unpredictable reality of working in a hospital. In the movie, Chastain plays Amy Loughren, a nurse and single mother, secretly dealing with some very serious health issues. When Charlie Cullen (Redmayne) ...

According to the publication, Cullen would go on to estimate "he had been responsible for the deaths of 30 to 40 patients at hospitals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania." I just think that the only thing I can say is that I felt overwhelmed at the time." Cullen was also known to contaminate IV bags of saline with additional drugs to induce death, as referenced in the movie, and reported by NJ.com. In larger amounts, it can cause what's called complete heart block, and then the heart is very irregular, and you know, it can cause death – it does cause death – in large amounts." Netflix's version of The Good Nurse deviates from the real story in some ways, but according to those involved, it still features a lot of truth. However, the serial killer attempted to offer an explanation for his actions during an interview with 60 Minutes in 2013. Per The New York Times, Cullen was also linked to multiple overdoses and deaths caused by the administration of insulin. And just like in the film, the real Cullen was found to have accessed the drugs on Pyxis, the hospital's computerized dispensing system, shortly before some patients died. As shown in the movie while at his final job, Cullen was found to be administering lethal doses of the heart medication digoxin to patients who hadn't been prescribed it, per The New York Times. The Good Nurse is, in fact, based on a horrifying true story. [Los Angeles Times](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2022-10-26/the-good-nurse-netflix-charles-cullen-fact-fiction), "For 16 years, an American nurse named Charles Cullen murdered patients, seemingly without motive." The Good Nurse is a strong crime drama that excels, yet it falls short as a crime thriller. Although we are aware that the movie is based on a serial killer, after watching the trailer, one can’t help but think that they reveal far too much in it. Cullen is really a byproduct of organizational cancer, according to the movie’s perspective. The title of any movie is essential, but “The Good Nurse”, which is rooted in the horrifying serial killings of several patients by a not-so-good nurse who inserted lethal poisons into IV bags, has a profound meaning. Eddie Redmayne’s character Cullen attempts to explain himself, but Lindholm drowns him out with the sound of a police siren and lamenting melodies. However, she must use every resource at her disposal to uncover the truth when he is labeled as a key suspect in a string of ambiguous patient deaths.
