Callum Wilson reveals what Manchester United player told him after ... (Manchester Evening News)

The Newcastle United forward opened up on a conversation he had with a Man United player on the pitch after his penalty appeal.

They’re trying to say I was trying to go through a gap that wasn’t there, I was one-v-one in the box and Varane steps across me. [The Footballer's Football Podcast](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0d7tp0p), Wilson said: "It’s actually getting embarrassing [the decisions] because I was waiting for a goal kick in our game, and I don’t even want to get started on the decisions in our game. I say to the ref ‘what are you saying?’ and he says it’s never a penalty. [Raphael Varane](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/raphael-varane) appeared to bring down Wilson in the box after 15 minutes had been played. Despite numerous United players surrounding Pawson and asking him to have a further look, decision failed to go the way of Ten Hag's team once again. [Erik ten Hag's](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/erik-ten-hag) side failed to find a way past Nick Pope in goal.

Callum Wilson 'wowed' by what Man Utd star said to him in ... (Football365.com)

Players on both sides were angered by several decisions in the stalemate, with each team denied strong penalty claims.

“Then I go to him, ‘ref, what you saying?’ He was like, ‘it’s never a penalty’. They were basically trying to say I was going through a gap that wasn’t there.” When you explain, it has to be quite soon.” It’s quite clear and we have to know our role. My view is, quite quickly, you have to accept the ref’s decision and move on. “I don’t even want to get started on the decisions in our game but I was waiting for a goal kick and one of the United players says to me, ‘what’s happened to the standard of referees in this country?’

Newcastle vs Everton live: Score, updates, stream link, lineups (NBC Sports)

Newcastle United looks to continue its early-season push for a top-four place when it hosts improving Everton at St. James' Park on Wednesday.

Armel Bella-Kotchap injured his shoulder against West Ham and had to come off, so Duje Caleta-Car comes in at center back in Saints’ only change. David Brooks and Lloyd Kelly are still working their way back from injury, while Ben Pearson is on the bench. Bournemouth head to West Ham on Monday, Oct. 24, while Saints host Arsenal on Sunday, Oct. Bournemouth went with a back three which was unexpected and some of their defenders seemed to be leaving it to one another and were confused positionally. Saints started with their trademark 4-2-2-2 system and they looked much more comfortable, especially defensively, with Maitland-Niles and Ward-Prowse sat in front of the back four. Pulisic was bright, daring, and did not lack for confidence in almost certainly raising Potter’s eyebrows moving forward. The USMNT winger did enough to get an assist but fellow sub Carney Chukwuemeka and his mates couldn’t supply the dagger. Newcastle had been buzzing along in attack until last week, when the scoreless draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford showed the strength of its defense. This will be controversial in some circles (Liverpool circles, really), but Kieran Trippier is playing better than any healthy English fullback in the Premier League right now. That Guimares bought into the project at all is impressive, but Newcastle will find it difficult to resist overtures for the Brazilian international if they can’t fast-forward their European ambitions. Almiron’s form, found: Atlanta United’s most-famous export has five goals this season including four in his last four, and he’s made the extended absence of Allan Saint-Maximin an afterthought.

Everton at Newcastle: Opposition Analysis | Regaining Momentum (Royal Blue Mersey)

Unlike at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, or against Manchester United, Frank may fancy his chances in a game of few clear-cut opportunities, as the Magpies lack the efficient finishing qualities possessed by the likes of Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo. Technically gifted, the 24-year old is an intelligent all-rounder who has energy, positional defensive attributes and a range of passing in his game. Everton improved in solidity as the campaign wore on and have demonstrated improved cohesion this season. Miguel Almiron is not normally one of the standout players for Newcastle, but has started this season in fine form. It is unlikely that Lampard will set up anything like he did that night back in February but what his approach will be is tough to assess. A midfield trio of Guimaraes, Joe Willock and Joelinton is hard-working and physical (and talented, in Bruno’s case) and average around 30% success rate in pressuring opponents. Jordan Pickford - notwithstanding his error last time out, which gifted a penalty to Harry Kane - has been outstanding and the defence, whilst allowing a high volume of shots has been conceding relatively few dangerous chances. Of concern, however is how relatively low-yield Everton’s attack has been: the team has scored just eight league goals from an Expected Goals (xG) total of 10.4. Howe’s team has begun the season solidly, though they are finding it tough to register wins. Talk (mostly tongue in cheek) of the Blues’ defence being statistically the best in the Premier League seems wide of the mark after the team shipped a combined four goals within six days. He’s proven his doubters wrong so far, as he approaches his first year at the helm, guiding the relegation-threatened team to an impressive eleventh-placed finish last campaign. Let’s take a look at the opposition in more detail.
