Fifa U17 Women's World Cup: Dennerby – 'India cannot be top team ... (Scroll.in)

India coach Thomas Dennerby emphasised that his players need to play football regularly to grow.

We were defending very, very well and now we know that they have some specialities like the distance shooting and they can also play from the wings and challenge our full backs. Second half, there wasn’t so much that they put us under pressure and I think we were holding the game but not dominating it. We request you to support our award-winning journalism by making a financial contribution towards the Scroll Ground Reporting Fund. That is the key, that is absolutely the most important thing to understand. Hopefully I can sit down with the technical committee and do some planning. But, of course we can see that with experience the girls are performing better and better. I know that these girls are ready to play senior level football and that will happen a lot also. I also hope that these young girls can be quickly signed by good clubs in the Indian Women’s League. But we need to take care of them at an early age and let them play football at good academies. However, he emphasised once again that his players need to play football regularly to grow. “For me, when I will talk with the girls tonight, I will tell them honestly that they have the talent to be in the national team players and play good tournaments at U17, U19 levels. “They need to come to a good environment where they do training sessions every single day.

Four minutes from close, substitute Lara scored the fourth goal and she found the mark again well into the add-on time. This time Ana Flavia, who plays for Sao Paulo FC, caught the Indian defence on the wrong foot with her lovely footwork and passed the ball from the right for Aline to finish. While Grazy made a desperate attempt to stop Neha, the Indian striker took a hurried shot that made Brazilian goalkeeper Leilane's job easier than she expected. While they indeed enjoyed the unforgettable night and made their presence felt too at times, they often looked overwhelmed by the complete dominance of the Brazilians, who were far ahead in skills. The mood perhaps was no different among the Indian footballers in the middle. The Brazilians led the proceedings 2-0 at half-time.

All 18 field players have now logged minutes for the USA in India and goalkeeper Abigail Gundry is the only player yet to see action. As the Moroccan defense brought pressure, the forward from Michigan was composed on the ball, cutting back with a nifty move before finding Kohler in the middle of the six-yard box and sending in a well-placed cross on the ground. Smith got just inside of her defender and slide to get her left heel on the ball and rolled the ball into the goal for her first career international goal. The USA’s convincing victory also came with the benefit of some rest for a number players who have played key roles thus far in India. Smith put an exclamation point on things in the 81st minute, scoring from almost the exact same spot as her first goal. In the 68th minute, Emeri Adames made a blazing run down the left wing before sending a cross in for Smith who battled with her defender to knock the ball into the net on the slide. The breakthrough came in the 24th minute as forward Melina Rebimbas played Kohler from the right edge of the box and the Northern California native one-timed a bouncing shot just inside the right post. While the Atlas Lionesses deployed their bunker tactics, and the USA didn’t fire its first shot until the 22nd minute, the young U.S. The match kicked off in a driving rain, but that served to cool down the humid India night just a bit and Morocco proved tough to break in the game’s early going. FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup done, ISL and Hockey World Cup ... (Sportstar)

Odisha looks set to host three major sporting tournaments after the FIFA U-17 World Cup (in the state) ended on October 17.

We have an additional challenge of doing it in Rourkela as a second venue, both for the Hockey World Cup and the Pro League matches later on. Odisha alone attracted over 33,700 fans for the matches – which is 88 per cent of the cumulative turnout at the previous edition of the tournament, in all matches. “We wanted to change the entire seating for the FIFA upgrade, the whole sitting plan. So, there was a lot of clogging up the shipping lanes, so it delayed in coming (to India). “During COVID, for example, some of this grass (pitches) was to be imported from the USA. There were some challenges because of COVID to get everything in place, but somehow it has all come out very nicely,” Vineel Krishna, the Sports Secretary of Odisha told Sportstar.

It’s not a secret, to have an elite level team at the top, you need a strong foundation first. But in reality, the effectiveness of the moves, the coordination, the skill to dissect a defence with a through ball or the precision to put the ball in the net is a result of years of hard work. That is the key, that is absolutely the most important thing to understand. To a layman, Brazil’s marauding attacking moves from the flanks and centre of the pitch may come across as a result of India’s inability to contain the opposition. While USA, Brazil and Morocco came to the tournament with experienced players playing regularly for clubs and academies, India presented a squad that was only assembled in February this year. But we need to take care of them at an early age and let them play football at good academies. “They (players) need to come to a good environment where they do training sessions every single day. Essentially, the best practice should have been to pick them from clubs and academies that impart high-quality training and provide regular football. It has been repeated quite often that India were unlucky due to the pandemic as the original squad assembled became ineligible as the tournament was pushed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In one half, the victorious Brazilian side stormed onto the field to celebrate their qualification to the quarter-finals of FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup 2022.

Girls should be motivated and given the freedom to come out of their homes and play the beautiful game. But, his side just did not get enough time to prepare themselves for the intensity of a World Cup. When the tournament started, everyone had their eyes and expectations set on Lynda to lead the way for India. This happened in all the games where a certain move could’ve changed the whole picture of the game, but India chose to execute a different move. India did a lot of things right at the tournament, but the girls looked under confident on most occasions. They were just not confident enough to take on defenders and test the keeper when they had the ball and ended up taking easy shots which didn’t trouble anyone. The girls couldn’t match up to their level in terms of height, speed and technical ability. In a situation where a short pass would have done the job, they chose to play a long ball and gave away the possession. The girls possessed an ultimate asset in the form of their never-say-die attitude. Results just didn’t go India’s way, which wasn’t unexpected at all keeping in mind the footballing culture and quality of their counterparts in Group A. It was the first time that a women’s team from India featured at a World Cup. The young blue tigresses were on the losing end of a 5-0 demolition to South American giants, Brazil.
