Lil Baby works best when you let him establish a vibe and just zone out to his pain-wracked, Auto-Tune-scrambled voice for an hour at a time. Lil Baby has a comfort zone, and that comfort zone can be perfectly effective at album-length. Coming off of the gargantuan success of his 2020 album My Turn, the young Atlanta rap star seemed like he could go anywhere.

Lil Baby's It's Only Me Is Mired in Mediocrity: Album Review (Consequence)

Following up the biggest album of your career is tough sledding for any artist. But for rappers? It's something only Houdini might pull off with ease.

Defying expectations rather than meeting them in the middle is paramount for a guy who prides himself on his pen game and ear for beats. Lil Baby improved from one album to the next and is more technically proficient here than on his last joint. The album starts promising enough with “Real Spill,” a track built around Baby chronicling how different life is for him at this juncture. “Real Spill” sets the tempo; Baby is hellbent on inspiring the people he grew up with and those coming after him. It’s Only Me, out Friday, October 14th, is the result of all that pressure, success, and newfound lifestyle for the young ATLien. Following up the biggest album of your career is tough sledding for any artist.

Every Song Ranked on Lil Baby's 'It's Only Me' Album: Critic's Picks (Billboard)

Lil Baby just released his new project, 'It's Only Me,' and Billboard is ranking each song on the album. Check it out!

It’s the perfect song to throw on in the whip for a nighttime cruise. Fame has afforded Lil Baby a taste of the good life, warm weather, and the disbelief that his life has taken a complete 180. One thing for certain is that Lil Baby is a man of integrity. Lil Baby spits one of his clearest verses over one of the entire project’s hardest tracks. It’s clear from the beginning that Lil Baby is in a much better place financially and spiritually. The song’s opening prog-rock-inspired piano loops gives Lil Baby the space to combust on the hard track like a climax. Over some breezy snare cracks, he acknowledges his incarcerated homies and recognizes that he’s a chosen one that’s changing the narrative. It gives Lil Baby one of his more sincere, softer moments on the entire set. Lil Baby enlists ATL Jacob and Ayo Slim to help him deliver a message to the ones that doubted him. Lil Baby is also co-producing the new BET+ unscripted series, The Impact Atlanta, and is featured in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II “Squad Up’ commercial. It’s one of the few times on the album that Lil Baby’s pitch isn’t altered. His smash single with rapper Gunna, “Drip Too Hard,” was recently certified Diamond with sales of over 10 million copies.

First Impressions of Lil Baby's 'It's Only Me' (Complex)

Lil Baby is back with a lengthy project with lots to dissect. Here are our first impressions of 'It's Only Me,' from best song to biggest skip and more.

Yes, the album is a little long and could use some trimming, but there are some great songs on this thing and Baby is writing from a fresh new perspective. EST Gee has been on a ridiculous run as well, and his verse on “Back and Forth” is a strong honorable mention. Eric: It’s so great to hear Young Thug on “Never Hating.” With Thug, it’s the little flourishes that make his verses so special, like the part where he chirps “whoooowoo!” at the end. I think Lil Baby is at his best on this album when he is reflective and vulnerable in his storytelling. The smooth verse he delivers on “Never Hating” makes you realize how large of a space his absence leaves in rap. Jessica: This is an ongoing issue but, had this project just been six to eight songs shorter, I’d have a different perspective on the album as a whole. Jessica: I’m not a fan of “Heyy.” When I heard it, I was shocked that it was the track Lil Baby was teasing ahead of the album. Long albums have been great for business for Lil Baby (his 26-song My Turn deluxe has been on the charts since it dropped) but it leads to some repetitiveness and fatigue on the back half of It’s Only Me. His life is full of paranoias and contradictions, and they’re spilling out into his songs in a fascinating way. Jordan: Ironically, I think “Heyy,” one of the singles, is the biggest skip on the album. But on It’s Only Me, Lil Baby is rapping about his life right now, in an honest and compelling way. Baby thrives when he dives into his backstory and gives a snapshot of what his life looks like now, and this track does exactly that.

Lil Baby Has a One-Trap Mind With Bloated, Unambitious 'It's Only ... (Variety)

After having the most consumed album of 2020, Lil Baby has followed that smash with a new record that repeats the same basic template for 23 songs.

Here’s an exercise: to get a clear sense of the bloated laziness of the record, play the first couple seconds of these tracks in order: “Stand On It,” “Not Finished,” “Everything,” “Top Priority,” and “Danger.” The accompanying album art to “It’s Only Me” is a Mount Rushmore of sorts, shrouded in a hazy sepia storm, each head bearing Lil Baby’s face. Or on “Pop Out,” the abrupt beat-switch to a menacing sound, both in production and in Nardo Wick’s strong feature, injecting a sharp energy that’s absent from most of the record. The lead single, “Heyy,” one of the few tracks with an immediately recognizable chorus, is built around a deeply lazy hook, with flat production that’s antithetical to Baby’s greatest strength. Of course, there is no requirement to tread in the direction of solemn, future-classic material, but “It’s Only Me” provides nothing interesting or particularly catchy as a record of grinding bangers either. “Russian Roulette,” the album’s new final song, comes closest to striking a reflective tone and offering anything close to a vivid pull, but by then the record is over.

The Best New Music This Week: Lil Baby, $NOT, Stormzy, and More (Complex)

This week, Lil Baby is back with his highly-anticipated album, It's Only Me, which features a standout collaboration between him and Young Thug, entitled, ...

“Lay Up N’ Chill” is a must-add to those late-night playlists. “Lay Up N’ Chill” is a slow-burning record that finds Pink Sweat$ pleading to get close and personal with a special someone. The best way to describe the track is that it is simply a vibe. “Bye Bye” is somewhat of a sad record, but it’s nice to hear Juice’s voice again. At the start of the first verse he sets the record straight on who he is, spitting, “The fake do a good job blending in with the real these days, but I still tell the difference/Realness get recognition, I recognized that from a distance.” “One Up” is one of four singles from Central Cee’s EP, No More Links and is bringing a bigger spotlight back to the UK drill scene. “Hide and Seek” is a solid record from Stormzy that captures the transition from the summer to fall season.

First Stream: New Music From Lil Baby, Blink-182, The 1975 and More (Billboard)

This week, Lil Baby takes his turn again, Blink-182 is back and edgier than ever, and The 1975 has a concise mission statement.

At 75 minutes, Return of the Dream Canteen (recorded during the Unlimited Love sessions) is both a deluge of what the Chilis do best — opening track “Tippa My Tongue” gives Anthony Kiedis free range to spit his game — and a project that’s more satisfying than a B-sides collection, especially when it comes to blissed-out cuts like the Eddie Van Halen tribute “Eddie.” decided to team up with Jack Antonoff for Being Funny in a Foreign Language — with the seeming intent of making an album about love — should entice anyone who’s even a casual fan of the UK group. That tension between personality and product has been fascinating to witness as Lil Baby’s profile has exploded since 2020’s My Turn, and makes up the heart of It’s Only Me, which arrives as a blockbuster (with guest spots from Future, Young Thug, Jeremih and Pooh Shiesty, among others) but is defined by Baby’s attention to detail and searing approach to storytelling instead of any lunges toward catchiness.
