As Alicent put Viserys to bed, Viserys answered the question Rhaenyra had asked earlier: if he truly believed in Aegon the Conqueror’s dream. During dinner, the king gave an emotional and moving speech about how much he loved them all and how much he wanted everyone to get along, which they did at that moment. An enraged Vaemond told the king and everyone in the hall that he would never allow it. Let’s have a reflection on what we saw, with a summary and explanation of the most recent instalment, entitled The Lord of the Tides, as well as what is expected for next week. It was Corlys’ wish that his grandson, Prince Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) be the heir to House Velaryon. They knew it would be a difficult battle, as King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) was essentially allowing Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) to rule.

In a nutshell, it means that the temporary peace between Alicent and Rhaenyra is broken. As the king lay dying, he and his wife were essentially having two different conversations. Clearly, at this point, he thinks he's talking to Rhaenyra again, and even though Alicent doesn't understand his talk of the Song of Ice and Fire, she latches on to the name Aegon when Visersy' murmurs it. The first couple of times we see Viserys in episode 8 he's lying in bed, struggling to tell the difference between his daughter Rhaenyra and his wife Alicent. The king is talking about Aegon the Conqueror, who first dreamed of the prophecy, but Alicent thinks he means their firstborn son. The problem?

It's an unfortunate miscommunication that followed Rhaenyra and Alicent's brief reconciliation with each other, as well as Alicent's acknowledgement of Rhaenyra's entitlement to the crown. Vaemond, Daemon, Aemond, and the rhyming pattern ruining Lucerys were at the center of the action in the dramatic eighth episode of 'House of the Dragon'.

It’s only when Aemond catches his nephew, Lucerys, laughing at him, that he turns his attention elsewhere and stands to give a speech of his own, delivering some of the best shade we’ve seen in Dragon to date. While in the beginning of the show, Daemon was painted as the bad guy, he is emerging as a fan favorite, thanks to his propensity for leaning against walls, his ever-changing hairstyle, and his obvious love for his niece-turned-wife, Rhaenyra. Clearly, having possession of the largest dragon in Westeros has been good to him and his ego. At dinner later that night, Aemond can’t keep his eyes off his fellow long-haired friend, foreshadowing a possible coming to blows between Aemond and Daemon in the future. Admittedly, Vaemond has good reason to think the Crown will take his side, as long as “the Crown” remains in the hands of Alicent and her father, Otto, while Viserys lays in bed in a milk of the poppy haze. It is when he puts aside years of conflict between him and his older brother Viserys to help the ailing King up to the Iron Throne, that Daemon seemingly completes his transition into a fully reformed man. He clearly has a bit of a complex when it comes to his authority in Driftmark and in the Velaryon family. Throughout the petitions for the Lord of Driftmark, Aemond stands behind his family with a smirk plastered on his face, and when Daemon slices Vaemond’s head in half, Aemond’s smile only grows larger, clearly intrigued by his uncle. With his brother possibly out of the picture, and the boy set to inherit Driftmark clearly illegitimate, Vaemond makes a move to become the head of a house, a position he has likely been eyeing for quite a while. Episode eight of House of the Dragon was a (mostly) quiet, yet powerful 71 minutes that prepared the viewers for the civil war to come in the final two installments of the season. The longest episode of the series, “The Lord of the Tides” threw a lot of information at us. When his brother, Corlys, is hurt in battle and Rhaenys and Baela attempt to remain positive (as one does when a loved one is ill), Vaemond quickly makes sure no one is hoping for the best.
