'House of the Dragon' Episode 7 Recap: Ruling Westeros? Child's ... (esquire.com)

The first truly great episode of HBO's prequel was also its grimmest.

House of the Dragon is able to barrel through these storylines mostly thanks to its shrewd pick of actors. The final twist – that Laenor survived the attack – provides House of the Dragon with its first, proper heart-thumping moment. Inevitably, it leads to a rupture among the adults, with Alicent demanding Lucerys’ eye is cut out too. Aemond, fed up of not being able to command a dragon, takes a midnight joyride on Vhagar (Laena’s dragon, snoozing mournfully on a beach), thereby taming the beast. While the adults like to deal with their frustrations with shady backroom deals – or, as in last week’s episode, ‘The Princess and The Queen’, by burning down an entire building – the children favour a direct approach. Which leads us to House of the Dragon’s seventh episode, ‘Driftmark’, where a child viciously slashes another child’s face and cuts his eye out.

'House of the Dragon' Episode 7: Recap & Ending, Explained: Is ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

The 7th episode of "House of the Dragon," titled "Driftmark," gives us a glimpse of the conflict that was going to engulf Kings Landing sooner than later.

Firstly, she loved him, and secondly, she knew that she had to strengthen her claim to the Iron Throne. He resumed his duties and knew that he was closer to his goal than ever. It was also symbolic of the fact that a blood bath was soon going to follow. She needed somebody to protect her, and she knew that Laenor wasn’t up to the challenge. They had Vhagar by their side and they knew that the inclusion of another dragon in their team had somewhat tilted the balance in their favor. He was aware of the harsh realities and that is why the desire to live long was slowly dwindling as he didn’t want to witness whatever this conflict entailed. Rhaenyra wanted Aemon to be apologetic for the fact that he questioned the legitimacy of her sons. He went close to Vhagar, the dragon that was ridden by Laena Velaryon and was once the pride of Driftmark. The young boy was well aware of the fact that he was an illegitimate offspring of a union that nobody was ready to recognize. She had said that though Aemond would one day ride a dragon, he would have to sacrifice one of his eyes. He mounted the beast and held the reins to tilt the odds in his favor. He had told Aemond, during the funeral ceremony, that he was unwilling to marry her because they didn’t have anything in common, and a lot of times, he didn’t understand the gibberish she spoke.

HOD's latest is all about funerals, weddings with bastards, and dragons.

She demands an eye for an eye pleading with Viserys for her children but when the King forbade Ser Cristian Cole from moving, she takes it upon herself to avenge her child. Not only does he go on to dismiss the claims and demand the tongue of anyone who talks about it in the future, but he also lets down Alicent. The kids of the family continue to have a hard time dealing with grief. The King offers Daemon a chance to return home to Kings Landing to be part of the house council but to no avail. House Of The Dragon is finally boiling over with the rising tension in the Targaryen house. Helaena is lost in her own world, Aegon has nothing but women and wine on his mind, but Aemond is fully prepared to take Laena's dragon for himself.

House of the Dragon episode 7 recap: an eye for an eye (The Digital Fix)

We open with Laena (Nanna Blondell) being buried at sea, which is a rather sombre affair, or it would be if Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) could stop giggling.

Daemon then arranges with Ser Karl (Laenor’s lover) that the Velaryon prince meets an unfortunate end, and before the credits roll, Laenor is dead. When Daemon says he cannot because of Laenor – who’d just recommitted himself to Rhaenyra and her cause – Rhaenyra gives her uncle a knowing look. As the royal family sail away, Daemon and Rhaenyra watch from afar. Viserys tries to keep the peace, but Alicent grows more hysterical, and she demands The fight’s quickly broken up, but the damage is done to Alicent’s reputation, who now seems like a crazy woman. This upsets Baela and Rhaena, who had hoped to claim the beast. As Cole goes to grab the boy, Daemon jumps in, forcing Alicent to take action. [Rhaenyra and Daemon’s relationship](https://www.thedigitalfix.com/game-of-thrones/house-of-the-dragon-rhaenyra-and-daemons-relationship-explained) are weird. Viserys (Paddy Considine), bless him, tries to reconcile with Daemon, but the prince is having none of it. The Rogue Prince seems wholly uninterested in burying (or sinking?) his late wife and instead spends most of the burial-making eyes at his niece, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). The pair talk about what could have been, and the princess blames her uncle for abandoning her. Jacaerys (Leo Hart), who’s aware of his status as a bastard, seems particularly upset by this crying to his mother that he cannot mourn his father without letting slip her treasonous affair.

Overall with just three episodes remaining the series is shaping up to be a worthy successor to Game of Thrones and is a must-watch for fans of the franchise. The episode ends with a surprising twist but on that was hinted at throughout the episode with small clues left by the writers and showcases the quality of the writing on display. The series has been slowly building up the animosity between the former friends from every start, the episode starts at the funeral for Lady Laena as both sides of the Targaryen family meet, and tensions slowly start to rise.

[the royal children](https://www.polygon.com/23368925/house-of-the-dragon-kids-who-rhaenyra-alicent-daemon-jace-joffrey-aegon) that goes from bad to worse in — ahem — the blink of an eye. It’s enough to make [Viserys’ (Paddy Considine)](https://www.polygon.com/23328660/house-dragon-viserys-iron-throne-cut) plea for a return to the family’s status quo seem almost comically out of touch, a referee trying to stop World War II with a whistle. Again the episode chooses a ritual — the most elementally basic, the literally Biblical tradition of an eye for an eye — as the focus of its conflict. Through the ritualistic demand we get a glimpse of the real Alicent, a confused and frightened woman left in a permanent state of panic by her father’s abuse. Rhaenyra’s secret marriage to her [uncle Daemon (Matt Smith)](https://www.polygon.com/e/23144854) serves to inflate her reputation as a ruthless power player, and sir Laenor’s duel with his lover Qarl (Arty Froushan) provides cover for their bittersweet escape from the bloody power games of the royal court. The scene is lit and shot like something out of Neil Marshall’s [The Descent](https://www.polygon.com/hulu/2020/4/18/21224924/best-horror-movies-on-hulu), torchlight flickering over the faces of the young heirs to the Targaryen dynasty as their childish squabble rapidly turns bloody, fists and feet giving way to rocks and knives. From the somber but politically charged opening funeral scene to the darkly majestic and disturbing claiming of [the dragon Vhagar](https://www.polygon.com/e/23145224) by the young prince Aemond (Leo Ashton), “Driftmark” moves at an effortless clip. [Miguel Sapochnik](https://www.polygon.com/23331775/house-of-the-dragon-miguel-sapochnik-leaving-showrunner-alan-taylor) and writer Sara Hess pull it off with aplomb. His delight at her evident unwellness is perhaps the episode’s most sickening sight, a further deception concealed behind his somber façade and the arcane traditions of the royal court. [fake Ser Laenor’s (John Macmillan) death](https://www.polygon.com/e/23144583), is a case study in the episode’s preoccupation with social rituals as a means of concealing and revealing truth. Laena’s funeral provides her uncle with a chance to launch a veiled barb at Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) over the parentage of her sons.

How is Criston Cole, a murderer, allowed to be on the Kingsguard still? The Velaryons should hate him for ruining their son’s wedding and punching the son. Together the two of them will be a real power couple and hang onto the throne. However, in a twist, the last scene of House of The Dragon Episode 7 shows the Laenor is alive in fact. I wish they had found a criminal or something to use as the body. I like the twist of Laenor not dying. The fight really seemed to crystallize the rivalry between the two women. It also avoids the Rhanerya and Daemon go for a long walk on the beach after night. Even Alicent seems in a kind of shock from the deaths carried out in the last episode in her name. Aemond admits to calling them bastards and says he heard it from his brother, though it’s clear from his looks his mother is the one who said it. Rhanerya and her kids are also secretly morning the death of Harwin Strong.

It devotes the final five minutes of the episode to advancing the plot in leaps and bounds. And then House of the Dragon does what it seems to do a lot. With Rhaenyra and Daemon united, a quick mid-season death is the most you could hope for. She wants an eye for an eye, and when that is denied, draws the knife herself. “The Kingsguard have never had to defend princes from princes!” wails wet blanket Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) as the fallout from the nocturnal enucleation begins. The only ones that matter are the cocky eldest Targaryen Aegon (Ty Tennant), creepy middle Targaryen Aemond (Leo Ashton) and Rhaenyra and Laenor’s ill-defined Velaryon blob Jacaerys (Leo Hart). [House of the Dragon](/topic/house-of-the-dragon), the Targaryen and Velaryon broods have gone from mere babes (or glints in the eye) to rambunctious children. In the red corner, we have the blonde bombshells: Aegon, Aemond and Daeron, repping for the Hightower/Targaryen match-up. [Game of Thrones](/topic/game-of-thrones)). [Paddy Considine](/topic/paddy-considine)) says to his brother, Daemon ( [Matt Smith](/topic/matt-smith)). At the heart of this episode is the question of patrimony, put succinctly by Steve Toussaint’s Lord Corlys. In the blue corner are the brown-haired bastards: Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey; sons of Rhaenyra and Laenor, though looking an awful lot like the late Harwin Strong.

Game of Thrones [seasons 1-8](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Game-Thrones-Seasons-1-8-Complete/dp/B07TD6BQHR/) are available on DVD and Blu-ray. It’s just a shame both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon have had to defend themselves over these apparently deliberate choices. [Vulture](https://www.vulture.com/2016/08/tv-dramas-are-literally-too-dark.html) posted an op-ed about shows that are too dark — comparing Mr Robot’s dim lighting to the jolly Jane the Virgin. [rewrote the history](https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a41497786/house-of-the-dragon-laenor-death/) of George RR Martin’s Fire & Blood with its shock finale, it could have been missed by some. Is it any coincidence that both 'The Long Night' and 'Driftmark' were directed by the Emmy-winning Miguel Sapochnik? Then again, at least this dark and rainy aesthetic was a consistent part of Gotham City. As this gives Euphoria its unique look, at least it felt like a purposeful decision where you could still see what’s going on. 'The Long Night' goes down in history as arguably the biggest Game of Thrones episode. Elsewhere, the key moment where Aemond Targaryen claimed Vhagar and took flight above Driftmark had us squinting into the darkness. Despite fan complaints, it was a decision that was backed by episode cinematographer Fabian Wagner, who told Sadly, 'Driftmark' just committed the ultimate Game of Thrones sin.
