The stars of Peacock's new Vampire Academy talk Lissa and Rose, diverse casting in the fantasy genre, character storylines, relationships and how the show ...
For it to be so normal to watch a fantasy show or any show that you love and see all kinds of people that look completely different, that sound completely different. It’s great to see a character you love overcome their adversity, and see characters supporting each other through trauma. As the goes on, you see Lissa say, “I can’t afford to not be political. When you watch any type of fantasy show you get lost in the world and attached to these characters. And it’s really cute, the fans are really really excited. I got a letter from this beautiful girl on Twitter like, “It’s so cool to see a Black girl be sassy, powerful, and valued.” We know exactly how they feel and that makes us feel good. I have to see what’s going on.” I think it’ll be really great for people to watch that and see a little bit of themselves in that, especially young people who may find politics annoying. It is thrilling and enrapturing in its rumination on relationships and the way trauma and grief attempts to isolate us — all while serving some of the most exquisite fight choreography around. In fact, almost the entire cast is played by people of color. In case you missed the YA novel and 2014 movie adaptation craze, here’s the low-down on “Vampire Academy”: A conventionally evil group of vampires known as the Strigoi are hunting down their elitist, magic-wielding Moroi vampire counterparts. Did one with Keiron (Moore), came out feeling really really good and I was like “I might actually do this!” This character I love and have loved since I was fourteen. For their part Strigoi are what you expect of vampires; immortal, sunlight-burning blood freaks with no humanity and an immutable obsession with all-black outfits.
With the premiere of Peacock's 'Vampire Academy,' school is officially back in session at St. Vladimir's.
I mentally boycotted the movie as a fan of the books, so I never saw it. “So much of Rose and Lissa’s friendship — what they experienced growing up, the things they saw, the trauma that happened to them, the losses they suffered — was told as part of their backstory,” Plec says. “With complete respect to the filmmakers who made the movie, I took great umbrage with the company that decided to market it like Mean Girls with vampires. It’s a cool way to tell the story.” They let us celebrate casting from all over the world, letting these actors be their true, authentic selves, rather than just casting based on what it says the character looks like in the books.” “So you get all this visual candy, plus the whole world comes together in one dominion.

Another vampire teen drama based on a book series of the same name and directed by Julie Plec? Lissa and Rose’s close bond, along with their forbidden romances with Christian and Dimitri respectively, fly in the face of vampire society’s strictures, and their struggle to maintain their self-determination will become a catalyst for rebellion. The trailer also teases a more intimate scene between Rose and her instructor Dimitri, Lissa sitting at a grave, and some kind of ceremony. Vladimir’s Academy, an institution hell-bent on binding them into the roles their society has decreed for them: Lissa as the next monarch whose role will be to maintain the power structures that already exist, and Rose as servant and guardian with no will of her own. The trailer also shows how Rose and Lissa start to develop a psychic link. The first four episodes are currently scheduled to arrive on the day of the premiere. She’s a veteran of horror as well, having appeared in Children of the Corn and Bloody Hell. The series is set to have ten episodes in its first season. Between this and the 2014 film of the same name, fans will have to wait a bit longer for a worthy adaptation of Richelle Mead’s book series. Many of the show’s sets are clearly artificial, Hogwarts-esque imitations of the real thing. As its first major foray into fantasy, Vampire Academy shows the seams of the fledgling streamer’s abilities. Nieves fares a bit better, balancing Lissa’s unassuming sweetness and subtle regality in a manner befitting the strange position into which her character has been thrown. Its stream of new characters and vampire species and royal families can be difficult for non-book fans to parse, so watching this show with subtitles comes highly recommended. Unfortunately, the latest adaptation of Richelle Mead’s beloved YA books struggles to reward the audience effort it takes to understand this chaotic, complex world. This show hasn’t come close to the paranormal melodrama that made Vampire Diaries such a hit, but at least its creative team has the right track record. Since the queen (played by Pik Sen Lim) has already named Lissa’s older brother Andre (Jason Diaz) as her successor, leaving the girls to dream of traveling the world together once they graduate from St. the mastermind behind the aughts vampire phenomenon that was Opening Shot: A Breaking Dawn: Part 2 credits-style montage rapidly dumps all the information you need to understand the Vampire Academy world, which includes three kinds of vampires and ancient, competing royal bloodlines. And they both have almost a jaded view of this society." "There's this small element of rebellion within Lissa that she explores more and more," Nieves says, referencing Lissa's friendship with a dhampir. With the first four episodes of Vampire Academy out now, fans can watch as Lissa struggles to figure out her place without her family. Vampire Academy is a story Nieves admits she wasn't familiar with when she first auditioned (for both Lissa and Rose, by the way). "I'll be honest, I was kind of nervous about it," Nieves tells EW, noting that she and Stringer only had one chemistry read before they were cast. The new series, based on Richelle Mead's popular book series, follows Rose and Lissa in the aftermath of a car crash that kills Lissa's family.

You will see things that are familiar to you, but you will not necessarily see them in the order that you're expecting. But then being able to expand it because we were able to shoot abroad, we shot in Spain, we got to have this beautiful expansive world they talk about in the books, but we got to make the visual imagery just gonzo, because we got to go shoot in Europe. It works you 12/15/16 hour days and how great if this could be the kind of business where we could both take everything we can from artists like ourselves who are willing to give as much as they can, but still maybe get them home for dinner every now and then to like kiss their kids goodnight. Probably most of the things that you see at some point or another in the book series you will end up seeing in this series as well. So we really just dove in, wanting to be as respectful of the source material as possible while still adapting a series that was written a good almost 20 years ago into today. Those are the stories that I like to tell in this particular genre. So it was just always in the back of my head as I carried on with my life and found different ways to tell stories about vampires from different books. You've got to have someone to walk the earth with if you're going to be walking the earth forever. Some people really respond to this sort of seductiveness, the idea that you can be that bold, magnificent, sexy, dangerous creature. In 2007/8 when I read the books for the first time, it wasn't a show I think you could have done very easily for television. Julie: I did tweet in 2015 that the world would be a perfect place if I could do the Vampire Academy for television. Even as she continued to expand the TVD universe with The Originals and Legacies, she was still holding out hope to dip her feet into this other vampire universe.

Plec, the creator of The Vampire Diaries, and Marguerite MacIntyre, an actor in The Vampire Diaries as well as a staff writer on the spinoffs, serve as co-showrunners. The Vampire Academy TV show is based on a six-book series of the same name, of which there was also a film adaptation in 2014. Lissa ultimately becomes queen, but it happens much later — in the final installment of the six-book series. After kidnapping Lissa, he is imprisoned and makes his daughter, Natalie (who does not appear in the Peacock series), turn into a Strigoi to help him escape. Even before Vampire Academy premiered on Peacock, it was clear that one major romance from the books would look different on screen. Here’s how everything goes down in the first novel of the series, on which Season 1 seems to be based. However, Mead acknowledged that you might find some differences between the Vampire Academy book and the TV adaptation. Spoilers ahead for the Vampire Academy books and TV series, Episodes 1-4.

"The minute you go to streaming and they give you extra dollars you can do exciting things – so there's a lot more action than [The Vampire Diaries]," she later added. "This looks very different to [The Vampire Diaries] – in a Spanish castle, the opulence dialled up. The world of Academy is far larger in scope. On surface level, Vampire Academy and Vampire Diaries are actually not connected at all. The authorship of Vampire Diaries novels is surprisingly complicated, owned by publishing company Alloy Entertainment and changing writers several times. Its legacy on US network The CW continued for more than a decade, and remains a fan favourite to this day of its tale of two brothers who find themselves falling for the same, human woman, implanting themselves in her tight-knit friendship group as it continued.

The feature film lays out the vampire hierarchy as quickly as possible, and to watch the movie all you really need to know is a Moroi is a vampire and a Dhampir is a guardian. And the script has some truly laughable lines, such as this gem that’s meant to be romantic: “You’re a unicorn. The CGI leaves a lot to be desired, and while the actors are good, they’re not great. The story is meant to focus on teens in high school, and yet you wouldn’t know it considering that Peacock’s “Vampire Academy” pulls from the likes of Amazon’s recent “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot and Plec’s own “Vampire Diaries” world, emphasizing the sex, foul language, and in-depth political discussions like this is “Succession.” The 2014 film understood the dark humor of the high school world, giving us catty teen shenanigans and a prom sequence. This new adaptation of “Vampire Academy” follows the same trajectory as the book and is more of a reboot than continuation. We’ve certainly come a long way from the hedonism of ’80s vamps like “The Lost Boys.” The process of adapting anything is arduous, but sometimes the need to pare things down for an audience to digest it can be the best solution. Of the eight episodes available to press for review, at least half contain lengthy expositional passages for the characters to deliver about Moroi and Dhampir history and tradition. A failed Indiegogo campaign to finance a sequel went nowhere and the series stagnated until Peacock developed it for TV. So it’s no surprise that, in the wake of The CW’s long-running vampire series “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals,” and “Legacies,” that creator Julie Plec would want to turn to another YA version of vampire novels: Richelle Mead’s “ The novels, and show, follow Rose Hathaway (Sisi Stringer), a Dhampir attending the prestigious St.
In the Peacock series 'Vampire Academy,' there's more than one type of vampire. The antagonists of the series are known as Strigoi, but who are they?
In the world of Vampire Academy, there is only one way to transform a Strigoi from their state: to stab a Strigoi with a silver stake enchanted with Earth, Air, Water, Fire and Spirit through the heart. In Vampire Academy, Strigoi are "the bad vampires." The class system present in both the Vampire Academy show and the books presents an interesting twist to a classic vampire narrative. Strigoi also have less "humanity" and are possessed with an animalistic instinct to hunt and feed. In mythology, strigoi are troubled spirits rose from the grave, could turn into animals, could turn invisible, and gained vitality from the blood of their victims. There are the dhampirs (half-vampire, half-humans) who protect the Moroi (the ruling class of vampires).
Vampires, magic, forbidden romance, unlikely friendship, and endless shipping potential abound in Vampire Academy.
Why not begin our story where we can take advantage of some of these great twists and turns?" Co-creator Marguerite MacIntyre added that viewers can expect to ...
The series made several tweaks to the relationship between Rose and Dmitri (Kieran Moore), her guardian love interest, including changing their ages "because that was a little something that we might not do now," MacIntyre told J-14. "No one told us that we needed to have uniform accents or any kind of cultural uniformity," Plec said in an interview with TVLine. "It's in this beautiful, epic setting because we were able to shoot it in Spain," MacIntyre told TVLine. "So much of Rose and Lissa's friendship—what they experienced growing up, the things they saw, the trauma that happened to them, the losses they suffered—was told as part of their backstory," Plec explained to TVLine. Vladimir's Academy is set deep in the woods of Montana in the books, the showrunners decided to move the supernatural school to a more international, lush location. But what broadcast television builds in a storyteller is the challenge of not having all the time in the world, not having all the money in the world, not having enough help, not having enough resources, and not having enough time to shoot. It’s funny, I never saw the movie, specifically because I was such a fan of the books, and the first trailer I saw for the movie made it seem like it was a broad comedy. The idea of coming up in that kind of structure with six acts, it gets so ingrained in you, that you can feel when a story is right and you can feel when it’s not. I think that that’s okay, and I think it’s a good thing. The foursome at the heart of the show is really cool and really fun. You talked about the importance of this female friendship, but there is also the romance at the center of this. On a personal level, how do you balance all of the stories you want to tell with burnout and not overworking yourself to the point of breaking? How does it affect the material that you can explore with this show and what you can say, when you’re working on streaming? Having looked at it from the point of view of an actor for so many years, and as a writer, and ultimately as a director and filmmaker, if not in this moment, in the future, she has that whole big picture approach to being a good leader. I get to have this partner who is so intelligent and so talented, and who also has this gift for understanding the big picture. And now, as they’re entering adulthood for the first time and new responsibilities are coming their way, it is only now that they’re taking off their rose-colored glasses and realizing that things aren’t as fair as they could be.” In the opening of the show, it says, “The spark of revolution can come from anywhere.” We are watching, literally, the birth of the match that’s going to light the flame. PLEC: As a matter of fact, even when we were developing it, in the early stages and doing the first couple scripts, we kept getting the note, “These girls should have a much stronger point of view about the society that they live in.” We kept pushing back and saying, “No, that’s the point.

Vampire Academy's premiere does a lot of world-building, especially regarding the Moroi, Dhampir and Strigoi. How do the supernatural beings differ?
The Strigoi are defined as vampires who are "immortal, killed by the sun. As disclosed thus far, Moroi can become Strigoi by killing the people upon which they feed, something Jesse Zeklos comes incredibly close to doing in "Benchmark." In the opening, Rose -- being perfectly in character -- describes the Moroi as the "ones who make the rules." The show notes that Dhampirs are "originally half human, half Moroi." One rule that the first episodes start to unpack is procreation protocols that are "established to maintain royal bloodlines." The show describes the Moroi as vampires who are "mortal, sensitive to the Sun and do not feed to the death."
