The underdogs have won outright a solid amount in the first week and the market is considered not nearly as tight as later in the season. [Baker Mayfield](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3052587/baker-mayfield) with a chance for revenge against the team that drafted him No. [Derek Carr](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/16757/derek-carr) (Devante Adams, [Darren Waller](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/2576925/darren-waller) and [Hunter Renfrow](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3135321/hunter-renfrow)) who could finish with 100-plus receptions. It functions similarly to a parlay in that it requires multiple legs and all must win in order to cash the ticket. So, if the market is not tight, then the actual value of adjusting a point spread six points is not nearly as valuable as it is later in the season. The market is considered too tight -- due to all the data points. Following that news, Caesars Sportsbook took a very respected bet on the [Philadelphia Eagles](/nfl/team/_/name/phi/philadelphia-eagles) to win the NFC East and Philly promptly surpassed Dallas as the division favorite. [Dallas Cowboys](/nfl/team/_/name/dal/dallas-cowboys)' futures also moved, after the team announced left tackle [Tyron Smith](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/13978/tyron-smith) will be out indefinitely with a torn left hamstring. Since the extra-point distance moved back in 2015, only 4.3% of games have been decided by exactly four points and 4.1% by five points. Obviously this type of volume and fluctuation cannot occur throughout the season with just a handful of days between games. The odds have been posted for several months and drawn a solid amount of professional money -- well before the recreational bettors arrived this weekend. Both the sides and totals have moved based on information, usually in the form of injuries, and also wagers by respected bettors.

Alex Highsmith has two sacks, including a strip-sack of Burrow just now, with the ball landing in Cam Heyward's hands for Pittsburgh's second takeaway. •20m ago What other intriguing games are on the schedule for Week 1? in February. •17m ago The Bears are trying to get a run game going to no avail, and Fields hasn't been moving outside the pocket much. At the end of the first quarter, the Bears and 49ers have combined for 91 yards — the Bears have only 21. The Steelers are up to three takeaways in just over one quarter of play against the Bengals. In the first quarter, each player had one target and no catches. The first touchdown in this game comes when Mac Jones is strip-sacked. •4m ago Which makes the early lack of run blocking a bit concerning.

I’m not starting a GoFundMe for Barkley, but it’s not easy being a running back embarking on a contract year after spending the first four seasons of your career frequently injured and often misused by some, uh, less-than-innovative offensive coaches. Much was made last year of the team’s rededication to the running game that turned the season around, but having Brown raises the team’s ceiling significantly. I don’t want to overreact to one Week 1 win over the Lions, but seeing him fit in so seamlessly was a really encouraging sign of what’s to come.
AFC South teams played the New York Giants, Washington Commanders and each other — and still emerged with zero wins. The Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers ...
Rookie Christian Watson, the second-round pick the Packers chose in April, sprinted behind the defense in the first quarter, only for Rodgers’s perfect pass — and a sure touchdown — to fall through his hands. Rodgers had less success in moving on from Davante Adams, who in his Raiders debut caught 10 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Still, Jackson stands to benefit from the principle and backbone he has brought to negotiations. In his first game sans Hill, Mahomes competed 30 of 39 passes for 360 yards and five touchdowns as the Chiefs pasted the host Arizona Cardinals, scoring a league-high 44 points. Joe Burrow erased a 14-point deficit when he darted a touchdown pass to Ja’Marr Chase on the final play from scrimmage in regulation, only for Minkah Fitzpatrick to block the PAT. Josh Allen dispatched any worry that he would have difficulty adjusting without Daboll, the offensive coordinator who became the Giants’ coach (and won his debut with a comeback at Tennessee). Lance is clearly a great talent and gets lauded by teammates for his maturity, but he is not in an environment suited for development. But the 49ers are expected to compete for the Super Bowl, and they just lost to one of the league’s expected bottom dwellers as Lance played poorly. The Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers played in a bog. The Cowboys emphasized decreasing penalties, and in their opener they committed 10. The product remains undefeated, and this is what to know. It could get worse: Jones was not available to speak with reporters because of a back injury, the Patriots said.

What the hell was that? When it comes to the first week of the 2022 NFL season we really got it all. A 20-20 draw, sad Bill Belichick, game-deciding referee ...
If the play was ruled correctly it would have resulted in a loss of down, the Browns being pushed back 10 yards, and a 10 second runoff. I don’t know how protections around the league are going to account for Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa AND players like Derwin James in the secondary who can blitz you out of your boots. In order to stop the clock with a spike the quarterback has to: This is special because it really takes skill to field an atrocious high snap and manage to rotate the ball into the absolutely worst position possible for a right footed kicker. This came with 1:13 left on the clock, the Browns were out of timeouts. Joe Burrow looked like a shadow of himself, the Bengals’ line couldn’t block to save their life, and everything was falling apart — but somehow, some way, they managed to put together an overtime drive that gave them a potential win on the back of a 29-yard field goal from one of the league’s most automatic clutch kickers. Instead the foot was taken all the way off the pedal, and instead the Vikings aimed to coast in for the W, rather than shut the door. Teams will bracket him, effectively double him, and force Kirk Cousins to find more options in the passing game — and I just don’t know if this team has the firepower past JJ in the passing game. It gave off a really familiar feeling in the 3rd quarter that they were leaving this door far too open, for far too long. A 20-20 draw, sad Bill Belichick, game-deciding referee decisions, a laces-in field goal that decided a game, and a sloppy Soldier Field that turned a battle in the trenches to a literal battle in the trenches, like it was something out of World War I. The Packers looked like absolute ass, but they looked like ass in Week 1 of 2021 too — remember, that’s when they were blown out 38-3 by the Saints in a game where Jameis Winston threw five touchdowns and looked absolutely indestructible. There are a lot of games which deserve a deeper dive this week, but none that had the stakes of

The Texans felt confident about Davis Mills and the rest of their offense and their defense did overachieve vs. The Bears also had to be pleased about their new-look defense under Matt Eberflus. The Saints had to be pleased with Jameis Winston coming back strong from his knee injury to bring the more aggressive passing game to life with Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry. They also had to be thrilled about rookie Cade York being their new centerpiece on special teams. Although his big mistakes and special teams cost them, the biggest concerns should be about an offensive line that was supposed to be much improved. The Steelers didn't look great offensively with Mitchell Trubisky, but they did just enough the passing game to steal the Bengals game to reward the takeaway-amassing defense. The 49ers were shorthanded around Trey Lance in the slop of Chicago and couldn't find their usual footing in the running and passing games. The Ravens didn't have their running game working with Lamar Jackson and without J.K. The Chargers showed off their new-look defense well against the Raiders, with Khalil Mack on the revenge attack, even without new shutdown corner J.C. The Bills showed how fully loaded they are offensively around MVP favorite Josh Allen and defensively around newcomer Von Miller in dominating the Rams after getting out of their own giveaway ways.

The Patriots’ offensive assistant coach wore a hoodie on the sidelines at Sunday’s game in Miami where temps on the field hit over 100 degrees. Things got worse from there as he finished with 4 INTs and a lost fumble in Cincinnati’s OT loss at home. The worst job of trying to catch a sure TD pass from a future Hall of Fame QB: Christian Watson. The second worst first throw of the season: Tua Tagovailoa. Worst first throw of the season: Joe Burrow. The worst job of dressing for the weather: Joe Judge.
Justin Fields put in work, even if his numbers don't show it. The Packers, Patriots and 49ers have much less to be happy about.
Daboll’s team, facing one of the softest schedules in the game, might just be bold enough to sneak into a Wild Card spot. On his first pass of the 2022 NFL season, Aaron Rodgers uncorked a rainbow to a streaking Christian Watson downfield. This year, he’ll have to be even better to elevate a receiving corps that was missing Allen Lazard, and looked enormously low-rent in the process. The Giants are a Rorschach test when it comes to running back value. The one that started his Washington debut with touchdown passes on his first two drives and threw a game-winning touchdown to rookie Jahan Dotson with under two minutes to play? Or is it the one who threw interceptions on back to back plays to allow the Jacksonville Jaguars to take a fourth quarter lead and necessitate those heroics? Here he is, showcasing a connection with his first year wideout and putting the ball in a spot where Dotson will either get it or draw a pass interference penalty: After a blown challenge, goal line stand and blown Steelers possession, Cincy had the chance to win the game with an extra point. The Bears were further buoyed by a Niner team prone to mistakes on both sides of the ball. Five came within five yards of the line of scrimmage. Burrow, back from the burst appendix that kept him out for the bulk of the preseason, was the axis around which this game wobbled. The only team to appear in last season’s conference championship games and escape Week 1 with a win was the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 49ers weren't the only expected title contender to lay an egg in Week 1. The Packers, Rams, Bengals, Cowboys, and Colts all stunk up the place as well.
San Francisco 49ers (0-1): The 49ers were sloppy, undisciplined, and overall underwhelming in a surprising loss to the Bears. Denver Broncos (0-0): How will the Seattle faithful welcome Russ back to his former home? Las Vegas Raiders (0-1): The Raiders had zero sacks and zero takeaways Sunday vs. Cincinnati Bengals (0-1): It was a disappointing opener for the defending AFC champions. Washington Commanders (1-0): The Commanders looked a lot more competent than I expected. Tennessee Titans (0-1): The Titans are no strangers to surprise losses early in the season. Chicago Bears (1-0): The Bears’ defense stymied the 49ers in a soggy game at Soldier Field. New England Patriots (0-1): I don’t know why Bill Belichick was so optimistic after the Patriots’ Week 1 loss to the Dolphins. A get-right game against the Seahawks is a must in Week 2. Houston Texans (0-0-1): Curious coaching by Lovie Smith cost the Texans a Week 1 win. Atlanta Falcons (0-1): Things were looking good for the Falcons until the fourth quarter hit, then the Saints reeled off 17 points in a row to steal a Week 1 win. Seattle Seahawks (0-0): The Seahawks appear to have hit on rookies Charles Cross, Boye Mafe, Abraham Lucas, Coby Bryant, and Tariq Woolen.
Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season is almost in the books and several teams made statements in their games, for good and bad.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5) - The Buccaneers' defense held the Cowboys to three points in a 19-3 win. San Francisco 49ers (10) - We're willing to give San Francisco a mulligan in the season opener. Buffalo Bills (2) - This team knocked off the defending champions in Los Angeles in Week 1 and looked really good in doing so. Philadelphia Eagles (9) - The Eagles edged the Lions, 38-35. Houston Texans (31) - The Texans tied the Colts in Week 1. Indianapolis Colts (8) - This team is supposed to roll to the division title. Green Bay Packers (6) - Maybe losing your top wide receiver in the offseason is not a recipe for success? Tennessee Titans (19) - We thought we might have been down too much on the Titans before they lost to the Giants in Week 1. A tie with the Texans in Week 1 is not the way to do that. Cleveland Browns (25) - We didn't think Cleveland would beat Carolina in Week 1, but they found a way to get a 26-24 win. Carolina Panthers (23) - The Panthers came very close to winning their season opener against the Browns in a 26-24 loss. Dallas Cowboys (11) - Dallas looked awful in Week 1 and now has Dak Prescott's injury looming over the team.
Then, we have the kicking. Both kickers missed potential game winning field goals, and by the end of the game, Lovie Smith decided to punt on fourth down ...

“He’s probably going to be the No. On the losing end, Josh McDaniels and the Raiders showed signs of life but dropped a 24-19 decision to the Chargers. Todd Bowles and the Buccaneers took care of the Cowboys. Wild Wentz did not disappoint in his Washington debut, a thrilling 28-22 rally over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The consensus is that Wentz will be good and bad game to game, quarter to quarter and snap to snap. Only when Bullock’s kick sailed wide right and the Giants’ 21-20 win was officially in the books did he joyfully rise up again. Jones then shoveled a pass to running back Saquon Barkley, who powered in for a two-point conversion to give the Giants a 21-20 lead. It's both a declaration and a reminder — and it also foretold what would happen in his Eagles debut.— Zach Berman (@ZBerm) After the Eagles’ 38-35 win over the Detroit Lions in Sunday’s season opener, it’s hard to argue. Brown’s locker stall back in South Philadelphia, serving equal parts declaration and reminder: “ALWAYS OPEN.” It’s more often found outside a 24/7 diner, but the spirit is applicable for a No. They won’t often play a team with a dazed, jittery quarterback that is missing arguably its best offensive player (the 49ers were without tight end George Kittle). Check in with The Athletic to recap all of Sunday's action and where things stand heading into Week 2.

Hate to see it on the first play, but it’s part of it—there’s going to be drops throughout the season.” Brissett wasn’t perfect Sunday, and the Browns are going to have to coach around him to a degree, I believe. My best guess is, at this point, is he needs to instill confidence in his group that they are close, and that it is just one thing here, and another there, that kept them on the wrong side of the scoreboard Sunday. Whenever you get an opportunity, you cherish those opportunities.” And then he was asked if Sunday was a career highlight for him, to which he said, “Playing in the NFL is a highlight everytime and I think that’s why I’m so emotional. “He’s one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, so to hear that from him definitely is a little confidence-booster.” And the accompanying decision to get the ball back to Barkley on a shovel pass was effectively doubling down on a guy who’d been through a lot to get there. And for Austin and Sony to close that out for us, for our O-line and tight ends, receivers, to block like that, it was a very complete win.” “You want to be the one to make the play. And that’s how we try to play is we have the rush and coverage working together. And I just felt he fit in and he deserved to know that we really appreciated him, we really wanted him and we were happy to have him on our team. Barkley was fine in the first half, but it was really his first carry of the second half that got his day going—“With [OL coach] Bobby [Johnson], we had a very good feeling about that play throughout the week in practice. “So that’s what we had talked about, that exact play against that look in that situation, and it’s nice to hit it the way you talk about it like that.
Four new head coaches started their careers with a win, and several star players made impressive comebacks. Meanwhile, the 49ers, Bengals, and Patriots all left ...
The Buffalo Bills decided to release O.J. Mack finished the day with three sacks and six total tackles. Instead, that role would be filled by the tandem of Matt Patricia and Joe Judge. While the Steelers may have lost defensive linchpin T.J. Sean Payton is no longer the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Quarterback Joe Burrow turned the ball over five times, with four interceptions and a fumble. "Would've loved to have the bragging rights against those guys," Mayfield said after the game. For a moment, it looked as though Mayfield had gotten the best of the Browns. Much was made of Baker Mayfield's debut with the Carolina Panthers, given that they would be hosting his former team, the Cleveland Browns, to start the season. It's only Week 1, but the vibes are good for the Giants right now. The Giants converted, going up 21-20. The Dolphins were clinical and dominant against the Patriots, largely coasting to victory.

Check out The Arizona Republic's picks and predictions for each game on the Week 2 NFL schedule, beginning with the Chargers vs. Chiefs game Thursday.
The Thursday Night Football game might be the game of the week in the NFL, but this could definitely have an argument for that title. Two explosive offenses meet in the final game of the Week 2 schedule. The Raiders lost their Week 1 game to the Chargers, but at least looked respectable in it. The Falcons did lose in Week 1, but they turned some heads in the close loss to the Saints. It could give Denver fits in Week 2, but we still like the Broncos to win … 1 seed in the playoffs. The Lions narrowly lost to the Eagles in Week 1. Both teams impressed in Week 1, but the Chiefs really impressed in a San Francisco should bounce back in Week 2 against the Seahawks. The Colts are technically 0-0-1 after tying the Texans in Week 1, but that feels like a loss to us. We think these two teams will both be 1-1 after Week 2, although we wouldn't be surprised to see the Giants escape with another win. We like their chances to narrowly beat the Commanders in Week 2.

NFL franchise succession plans are taking center stage as valuations soar, families feud, and owners age. What's next for the Chicago Bears?
There’s a big difference between the financial status of Walton, one of the richest people in the world when he bought the Broncos, and the Halas/McCaskey family, who bought the Bears in 1920 for $100. [legal battle](https://www.nytimes.com/1987/08/02/business/chicago-bears-unhappy-heirs-and-a-stock-dispute.html) between the McCaskey and Halas families. (The 1981 Halas reorganization also occurred just a few years before Congress enacted a generation-skipping transfer tax, which would have further burdened the family in his move to shift Bears ownership directly to his grandchildren). As happy as the NFL is to add Walmart heir Rob Walton to its ownership ranks in Denver, the league prefers teams stay in the family when an owner dies. The longer a family holds an NFL team—and there are three already in their 10th decade—the harder it is to satisfy both those desires. Atlanta and Denver were sold after their respective owners died, with the heirs in both cases fighting over whether to keep the team in the family. “The more you require one guy with a very small interest to control the family’s biggest asset, and force everyone else to be blocked out, the more tension you are going to have.” “The owners own the league, and it’s for the owners to decide what the rules are,” Marc Ganis, co-founder of Sportscorp and an advisor to the NFL, said. “If they choose to adjust the rules to make it easier for their heirs to keep the teams as generations change, that is entirely and completely their prerogative. On the other hand, the NFL wants family-controlled businesses that are protected from financial uncertainty and family in-fighting, which means it wants concentration of equity and voting shares. The average NFL franchise is now worth $4.14 billion, but the league still believes in each franchise as a family business. Through a series of interlocking family and individual trusts, Halas divided his 49.35% of the team into equal 3.8% stakes for his 13 grandchildren.

Russell Wilson's Broncos debut on his oold homefield was spoiled by Geno Smith and the Seahawks, who prevailed on Monday night, 17-16.
In the final minute, Denver had yet another opportunity to drive down the field and take the lead. Replacing [Russell Wilson](https://www.nfl.com/players/russell-wilson/)is a tall task, but Smith certainly got off to a good start, and earned the adoration of Seahawks fans everywhere with his Monday night showing. To summarize, Hackett froze, and decided his team had a better chance of victory with a kick that once stood as the NFL record for longest made, than it did by putting the ball in the hands of a future Hall of Famer. It began with a series in which Smith completed his first four passes and capped the drive by evading the rush to toss a 38-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open [Will Dissly](https://www.nfl.com/players/will-dissly/). Oh, and about those fumbles: Denver found itself in goal-to-go situations on three possessions in the second half. [Geno Smith](https://www.nfl.com/players/geno-smith/)was absolutely dialed in on Monday night, completing 17 of 18 first-half passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns.

"It was a hostile environment, it always has been. The Broncos defense pitched a shutout in the second half. "That's what makes me really frustrated for him.'' "It didn't bother me,'' Wilson said. Lock was one of the three players the Broncos had sent to the Seahawks in the March blockbuster. Nine NFL playoff teams from last season lost in Week 2. That left the door for some playoff upstarts for 2022 to make their case for this season.
The Packers' Week 1 loss to the Vikings was reminiscent of last year's loss to the Saints. Justin Jefferson (184 yards) and A.J. The Cardinals and Raiders are among those playoff teams from last year hoping to avoid the 0-2 start. The new-look Broncos will make their home debut with Russell Wilson against Houston, which played Indianapolis to a tie. The Bengals should bounce back after a disaster Week 1 in which Joe Burrow threw four interceptions. It can't just be Cooper Kupp, even against the Falcons, who showed improvement with Marcus Mariota and a young roster. Lamar Jackson and Tua Tagovailoa were efficient in the opener, and they did that without the support of a trusty running game. The Giants have the opportunity to be the surprise 2-0 team of the early season under Brian Daboll. The Lions showed fight after digging a huge hole against the Eagles, and this is a must-win game of sorts for Dan Campbell in the early season. Each week, SN will pick the NFL games straight up and against the spread. While the Packers will look to avoid a 0-2 start against rival Chicago on Sunday Night Football; Minnesota can assert early control of the NFC North at Philadelphia. Now, they meet in Week 2 in what should be one of the best games of the week.
