The funeral for the queen — who came to the throne aged just 25 in 1952 — will be a public holiday in the form of a Day of National Mourning. From the Scottish capital, the coffin will be flown to London on Tuesday to lie in state for four full days in Westminster Hall, the oldest building in parliament. On Sunday, the queen’s coffin will be taken by road from Balmoral to Edinburgh, where it will rest in the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The speaker of the House of Commons and selected senior MPs swore allegiance to the new king on Saturday and Charles met Truss again, plus the cabinet and the heads of the opposition parties. British Prime Minister Liz Truss — only appointed by the late monarch on Tuesday — offered the nation’s support to Charles in parliament on Friday as she acknowledged the “awesome responsibility” he bore. “I am deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty, which have now passed to me,” Charles said in a speech before swearing an oath.

Part of the complication is that Princess Anne dated Andrew Parker Bowles in 1970, but the problem was that he was a Catholic, so technically, the Queen would not approve their marriage. This infidelity led to complications in the marriages with Camilla divorcing Bowles in 1995 and Charles divorcing Diana in 1996, a year before she was killed in a car crash. There is a trite saying: “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown” This may be true of the Queen as she tried to balance crown and family; it appears the latter suffered. The British taxpayer paid out large sums in compensation to former slave owners, though none was handed to the people who had been enslaved. Elizabeth II to Charles III: The sun continues setting on England, By ... (Premium Times)

There have been mixed reactions following the 8 September passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Some mourn her death, while others snigger at her.

Part of the complication is that Princess Anne dated Andrew Parker Bowles in 1970, but the problem was that he was a Catholic, so technically the Queen would not approve their marriage. It told of her judgment of character because under the Royal Marriages Act 1772, she had to consent to the marriages of her children and lineage. Accession of King Charles III has led to renewed calls in Caribbean nations to remove the monarch as head of state.

Togo and Gabon became the latest members this year, despite never having been under British rule. “The advancement of the decades has taught us that the time has come for St Kitts and Nevis to review its monarchical system of government and to begin the dialogue to advance to a new status,” Shawn Richards, the deputy prime minister, said. In the Bahamas, following a visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prime Minister Phillip Davis said he hopes that during the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of independence, “there is a lively discussion and debate about our future: about who we are and what we want to be.” The decision of Barbados to ditch the queen as head of state in November 2021 was seen as a boost for the republican cause, and Belize has said it wants to follow suit. In Canada, republicans are in a minority, and on Saturday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau affirmed the country’s loyalty to the new king. The accession of King Charles III to the British throne has renewed calls from politicians and activists in the Caribbean to remove him as their head of state.
