Manchester City and the prolific Erling Haaland face Aston Villa at Villa Park in their latest Premier League match.

— Subscribers can stream via either the SkyGo app or the Sky Sports website. Douglas Luiz came off the bench to briefly pull Villa level at Arsenal and remains at Villa Park despite the Gunners' deadline day interest in him. We know we can hurt this team, and I'm really looking forward to the game," Steven Gerrard said at his pre-match news conference. When Philippe Coutinho put Villa 2-0 up at the Etihad Stadium on the final day of last season, it looked like Pep Guardiola's side were about to surrender their title to Liverpool. Erling Haaland's hat-tricks against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest mean he has nine goals in his first five Premier League games — a competition record. They're both on the bench. The answer today is neither. Manuel Akanji, who signed from Borussia Dortmund this week, is absent due to the birth of his baby son. 10 mins from kickoff: We won't get to see City's latest arrival today. Even the most laid-back goalkeeper in the Premier League has to tune in a bit. Haaland drops in and acts as a massive wall in a wall pass with Silva.

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard jokingly pleaded with Pep Guardiola to rest Erling Haaland when his men lock horns with champions Manchester City.

You need to be diligent with this individual, which is easier said than done because that's the level of player you are dealing with and he's a top player. The challenge is to go and prove that [wrong]." [Guardiola](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/pep-guardiola) splashed out £51million to win the goalscoring lottery as Norway sensation Haaland, 22, continues to pay that outlay back with interest. But if you focus too much on one player in this situation you can neglect the other world-class talents they have and that's what you are dealing with here." [City](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-city-fc) opted to shuffle the pack this summer and [Haaland](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/erling-haaland) was the marquee signing. He said: "He's very different and a physical specimen.

Gerrard said: "From a personal point of view, I very much back the club's decision and stance on that. I'll do my job to the best I can do, I'll step forward, I'll take the responsibility in the best way I can. What we did say is that we can't lose the player in the final moments of the window. The ball comes back to De Bruyne on the overlap, he hits the cross in first time, looping the ball over Martinez to a lurking Haaland on the back post. Adding to a tough week for former England midfielders, Scott Parker was fired as manager of Bournemouth on Tuesday. Haaland and De Bruyne are connecting brilliantly out there, with the Belgian popping up all over: on the right wing, on the left, in the box. Villa hit City on the counter. He takes a touch with his right foot, and then pulls back across the box with his left... Haaland knocks the ball onto De Bruyne in the Villa box. Sometimes you've got to put more legs in the team, you've got to have people in your team who can run forward with speed. It's a big draw, but there's still tonnes of work to do. I'm really proud of the players today.

Aston Villa vs Manchester City, live! Score, how to watch, stream link (NBC Sports)

Manchester City brings its red-hot attack into Villa Park to meet under fire Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa at 12:30pm ET Saturday.

City had all of the game’s big chances but Villa only let one go over its line and Bailey buried his 3/4 chance (It was more than a 1/2 chance but certainly not a promise). Everyone understands we were in a tough situation but he just wanted us to bring the best version of ourselves on the pitch and we did that today.” The hosts have looked vulnerable against most teams but Tyrone Mings played well against Arsenal and Ollie Watkins is proving a relentless attacker. Sometimes you’ve got to take a little bit of technical, the nice bits of your team away, to put in some real blood and thunder. But we were just not precise enough in the crosses, we missed a few situations and that’s why we could not score. We were not precise in our final third touches and our simple things, especially in the first half. “A lot of credit to [Steven] Gerrard because going into a big important game he didn’t let anyone feel pressure and that was important for the team. City had 73 percent of the ball and took 13 of the game’s 16 shots but Villa stayed tight. “Listen I’ve had to tweak a few things and look at myself behind the scenes. There were a lot fewer of the latter on Saturday, as Emiliano Martinez and Tyrone Mings kept the defending unit as compact as possible and ready to counter attack. City had all four of the game’s “big chances” but only scored once. Villa shows well: The goal came out of nothing, and so, in a sense, did the performance.

Aston Villa vs Man City live updates (Manchester Evening News)

Man City travel to Villa Park looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Haaland does superbly to control the ball inside the box and flick it into the path of De Bruyne. The Belgian has to snatch at his poked finish and it flies just past the far post. The Blues were starting to completely dominate but they passed up a few chances to double their lead. He would have been offside but the goalkeeper wasn't to know. Riyad Mahrez drags a right-footed shot wide when he really should be hitting the target. Steven Gerrard has criticised referee Simon Hooper for blowing his whistle early rather than allowing play to go on and then consulting the VAR. "The beauty about this goal is the delivery. He continued but at the end he could not continue. We will see, I didn't speak with the doctors." We were not precise in our final third touches and our simple things, especially in the first half. [Pep Guardiola](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/pep-guardiola)'s side will be looking to continue their impressive start to the season, having won four and drawn one of their opening five games. City's opponents, Villa, have not enjoyed an ideal start to the campaign.

Manchester City's goal to open the scoring against Aston Villa, arguably, involved the best midfielder in the world passing to the best striker in the world. It must actually feel a little dirty for Guardiola to be in charge of a team now that can score these types of goals. "We praised the players after the first half for out of possession stuff but said we need to be more aggressive on the regain and believe in ourselves more. It was direct, to the point, ruthless, and showed a different edge to Pep Guardiola's side that will send alarm bells ringing for opposition managers. Jamie Carragher, on co-commentary, said: "It was all about that man for the goal, De Bruyne. We were not precise in our final-third touches and our simple things, especially in the first half. We had chances to score a second when the game was in our hands but we didn't. "I need to lead this team - I knew this job was huge and I know our run of form hasn't been good enough. De Bruyne delivered a sumptuous cross from the right that flew over Martinez's reach and dropped perfectly for the 22-year-old to side-foot home at the far post. Listen to the fans' reaction, it doesn't matter if I'm proud but that they are. City looked the likeliest to score next, though, as Haaland was twice denied by Martinez in the space of four minutes. Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard speaking to Sky Sports: "Very proud - the players have come together today.

Erling Haaland gave Manchester City the lead early in the second half at Aston Villa but Leon Bailey hit back for Steven Gerrard's side.

Even the most laid-back goalkeeper in the Premier League has to tune in a bit. Watkins stands up Stones and the City centre-back slides in to make a vital challenge, deflecting the ball behind. The England international was stripped of Villa's captaincy and dropped at the start of the season. Watkins gives a return pass to the midfielder but Ramsey's touch is heavy and Ederson is out to knock the ball away. Haaland drops in and acts as a massive wall in a wall pass with Silva. Villa have really grown into this game, with the early chance that fell to Walker still the best City have enjoyed. Walker tells the ref and gets a new one. 71st minute: Villa can't get a read on De Bruyne at the moment. Ramsey drives at the right-hand side of the City defence and Bailey crashes home a first-time finish left footed. That chance came after he popped up off the left, much to the bemusement of the Villa defence. Coutinho has a history of scoring against City and sent a 25-yard strike flying home via the underside of the crossbar. One of the consequences of Walker’s internal positioning was it opened up space on the right for De Bruyne to deliver his magnificent assist.
