Newcastle: Expert issues Wilson claim after £58m confirmed news (Football Insider)

Football Insider has been told by Noel Whelan that Alexander Isak's arrival will help Callum Wilson and Chris Wood 'work harder and push more' at Newcastle.

[Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/30778/12680527/alexander-isak-newcastle-close-to-agreeing-club-record-58m-deal-with-real-sociedad-for-striker) updated later that day to reveal the Magpies will pay a club-record £58million for the striker – who scored six league goals for Real Sociedad last term. It also gives Newcastle that extra rotation option. “They’re buying all the right players at the moment, and you’ve just got to commend the people behind the scenes for working hard to get their man after the links all the way back in January.”

Newcastle notebook amid reason for Lucas Paqueta snub, Howe ... (ChronicleLive)

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is in a good place after adding his fourth summer signing to the roster but steered clear of another star from Lyon.

Although, it has to be said that transfer discussions have been much more cordial for Howe than the former Liverpool boss. United's squad was already oversubscribed before Isak's arrival but there are four more players than the rota has room for ahead of the deadline for the 25-man squad. And then the sporting director, along with head scout Steve Nickson, jetted off to get the deal for Isak done. The signing came swiftly on the back of Yasir Al-Rumayyan's visit to Tyneside for the 3-3 draw. And while Newcastle were well aware of his friendship with Bruno Guimaraes it was ironically the Toon star's presence that meant they sat back on the chance to sign his old Lyon team-mate. Combined with a decision to give Sean Longstaff a new deal, an imminent extension for Jonjo Shelvey once he's played three matches and Joe Willock's energy and flair, Newcastle felt that money needed to be spent in other areas.

[Alexander Isak](https://www.themag.co.uk/2022/08/real-sociedad-release-alexander-isak-best-moments-video-well-worth-a-watch-newcastle-united/) will be on the bench I fee, providing all paperwork / clearances have been done in time. Same story with Chris Wood, got the winner at Tranmere and was one of Newcastle’s better performers, hoping he can use that goal as a launchpad for more goal threat. He will have been preparing this past week with Chris Wood as the main forward and Joelinton and Bruno G are another two automatic choices and as for who plays in the midfield with them, I think Joe Willock will continue, the only NUFC player to have started all four matches so far this season. Matt Targett returned on Wednesday night and whilst he was at fault for the goal and maybe not at his best generally, I think that 45 minutes and training this week will have got him back into something like full fitness. So starting against Wolves and Burn unlucky to be on the bench.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Newcastle United Preview: Probable... (The Hard Tackle)

Newcastle United will look to extend their unbeaten start to the new season when they travel to the Black Country to face wounded Wolves at Molineux on ...

That is why the Hard Tackle backs the visitors to come out on top with a narrow 1-0 victory in what could be a tightly-fought contest at Molineux on Saturday afternoon. Nick Pope will continue to operate between the sticks for the visitors after a string of stellar displays, with second-choice Martin Dubravka linked with a move away to Manchester United. The 25-year-old did that against the reigning English champions, and also made several defensive contributions, which is very unlike him, delivering almost a flawless performance in the process. The Frenchman stole the headlines at St James’s Park last Sunday with a sensational display juiced with individual brilliance, grabbing two assists in the process. The mid-block will look to suffocate Wolves’ midfield playmakers with their intense press, with the latter also known for his late surges into the box. The new signing has been registered in time to feature on Sunday, but Chris Wood will be the target man up top, starting against Wolves. Because of this, the injury-prone striker is now set to miss two to three weeks. The Portuguese coach will set his team up in a 4-3-3 system in front of goalkeeper Jose Sa. Wolves boss Bruno Lage practically has a clean bill of health, with Chiquinho the only confirmed absentee due to a long-term injury. The West Midlands outfit controlled the first half at Tottenham last weekend but were unable to convert their possession into a goal as they fell to a 1-0 defeat. Ahead of their latest meeting with Wolves, The Hard Tackle takes a closer look at both teams. Wolverhampton Wanderers face Newcastle United at Molineux on Sunday, searching for their first Premier League victory of the season.

Wolves v Newcastle: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Can Eddie Howe's side move up to fourth with victory at Molineux? Join Daniel Harris.

His cross is a decent one too, but Neto, arriving on the scene just before Pope, has to flicks quickly before the keeper blocks, and sends a fair effort onto the roof of the net. On the face of things, that’s a problem, but looking at their squad, it’s easy to feel optimistic for them: Pedro Neto is still feeling his way back, Gonçalo Guedes is settling, Nathan Collins is promising and Matheus Nunes is a potential gamechanger. It feels wrong to call a draw a statement performance, but it’s no less right for that – and that was before they added Alexander Isaak into the mix. Oh, and Lage still hopes to get in a couple more players, also noting that Guedes has just found a home – mazal tov, old mate – and Nunes has a bag of clothes. Moutinho collects a loose ball just outside his own box and pretty central, leaping in a glorious inside-out pass that swerves out to Guedes on the right. He’s got the legs on Burn, and Wolves need to feed him whenever they can. 10 min Neto is enjoying himself now, dashing down the left and standing up a cross this time … but he can’t shovel it out from under his feet and get it on target, shooting a couple of yards wide. 16 min Wolves get the corner away and one pass, swept out to Guedes by Neves, turns the play. But mistiming his jump slightly, he gets under a ball he needs to be over, half-heading, half-shouldering a poor effort over the top from eight yards. He has a look, then lays back to Neves, in space 20 yards out, and when the ball arrives, he takes a touch then lashes a gloriously pure drive through Willock’s legs – he’ll not want to see that one again – that fizzes past Pope and into the bottom left. He might want to get tighter after the break, because standing off is allowing his man to the space to get moving, and one-on-one, he’s struggling.

Eddie Howe's team are unbeaten but head to Molineux to face a more attack-minded Wolves team.

No player has had more shots from outside the box in the Premier League this season than Neves’ seven, contributing to Wolves’ total of 24, a league-high. A defensive header lands at the feet of Longstaff, who looks to tee up Saint-Maximin, but it's a poor final ball that leaves the Frenchman with too much to do. Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Newcastle United A win for them today would lift them into fourth ahead of Tottenham’s game later on. Saint-Maximin stunner snatches late draw for Newcastle to deny ... (The Guardian)

Allan Saint-Maximin's 90th minute strike rescued a 1-1 draw for Newcastle to deny Wolves in the Premier League.

“The first one [Schär’s tackle] I think if the VAR tells him to go and look, maybe he makes a better decision.” “In the moment, the referee sees nothing but then the VAR talks to him and he changes his mind,” Lage said. Pedro Neto cut a frustrated figure at times at his teammates’ decision-making, and at the two VAR decisions that went against Wolves. With a recharged squad, Lage can expect to be judged in the coming weeks, especially if Wolves complete their move for the Austrian striker Sasa Kalajdzic from VfB Stuttgart by this week’s transfer deadline. This left Wolves ruing their failure to convert more than one of their few but clearcut chances after Rúben Neves had given them the lead late in the first half with a superb goal of his own. Saint-Maximin, after his first goal since January, ran clear only for José Sá to save brilliantly and then the Wolves goalkeeper was beaten as Neves tussled with substitute Elliot Anderson and the ball struck the crossbar.

NATHAN SALT AT MONLINEUX Wolves are still waiting their first three points of the season as a late goal from Allen Saint-Maximin saw a share of the spoils ...

In the end a draw, but Isak’s main takeaway? Wolves, incensed, then believed, with eight minutes left, they’d sealed their first win of the season when Jimenez tapped in after a three-on-one break. Neto had fouled Ryan Fraser to start the break. ‘When that ball was popped up in the air, he is so unpredictable you don’t know what is going to happen. Two minutes after the break, fans still filtering into the South Bank, Fabian Schar was late catching Neto’s shin. Everyone outside of Saint-Maximin seemed to freeze as the ball fell onto his right foot. It was a miss that, even with Neves scoring minutes later, summed up Wolves’ struggles. Much is expected of Alexander Isak, the £60million club record signing that penned a six-year deal from Real Sociedad last week. Flush on the volley. Playing next to the Frenchman is going to be a hell of a lot of fun. It was building to a crescendo and boy did Saint-Maximin deliver the showstopper with, unquestionably, a goal of the season contender. Fair play, what a finish.’
