Episode 19 of Alchemy of Souls starts this extended episode out on the lake in the past, with Bu-Yeon trying to find the ice stone.
The Queen, unfortunately, has not returned to her own body and is forced to dwell within the burnt body of Shaman Choi for now. Seeing Jang-Uk ready to sacrifice everything is a nice touch, as are the growing ties between Mu-Deok and Jang-Uk who actually look set to get married! I mean by this point her plot is basically done so we’ll have to wait and see what the scriptwriters do with her going forward. It’ a bittersweet reveal, and all that’s left of Jang Gang are his belongings, which are returned to the King. In the wake of this, both Mu-Deok and Jang-Uk have lost their power but neither seem to mind. He’s still in pain during the night but Mu-Deok goes some way to try and help. Outside, Jang-Uk decides to go through with his sacrifice, despite the Crown Prince and Mu-Deok’s objections. With the king and the royal family in attendance (minus the Crown Prince but we’ll get to that) they bring forward Shaman Choi… She knows it has the power to bring back the souls of the dead, so she pleaded with him to use it and bring back her daughter. Park-Jin wants her brought to the Training Center but Dang-Gu is not so sure. And of course this coincides nicely with our journey thus far, with most of our characters stuck inside the forcefield and the confirmation properly that Mu-Deok is actually Bu-Yeon. Jin-Mu is there too and watches alongside Woo-Tak as the girl uses her senses to find it.
Naturally, this means that there's a bit of jealously, proven by the fact that Jin Mu steals the ice stone from Bu-yeon on the boat, and seemingly makes no ...
The real Queen is worried that the Cheonbugwan mage could have shifted souls to exit the capital, unable to be recognised, but it’s made clear that part of these worries are just a front for her own concerns that she will have to permanently exist in Shaman Choi’s body. Next, Mu-deok tries on a wedding dress on behalf of an unnamed bride, before Jang Uk enters for the two to perform a ritual together. With that being said, the heir has more important things on his mind, especially when afforded the chance to head to Cheonbugwan’s secret room for a meeting with Jin Mu. “I am responsible for all the mistakes related to Songrim, Jinyowon, and Cheonbugwan,” the Gwanju admits, explaining that he will become petrified where he is to make up for all that he has done wrong. Demonic in her demeanour, Shaman Choi vows to get rid of the ice stone, but warns that once she does, everyone inside it will die. Antagonising the Cheonbugwan mage further over him being the by-product of an affair that disallowed him the chance to be properly acknowledged by the Jin family, Choi soon finds herself stood up to, and her past life mocked. Throwing what is said to be the ashes of Gwigu up in the air, Park Jin flusters Shaman Choi, who immediately panics. Yet all that occurs is an argument, with Shaman Choi angered by the assistant Gwanju’s explanations on the order of the world, and defamation. Bringing up the visit of Jang Gang that saw him claim the ice stone, Park Jin effectively forces Ho-gyeong into an answer, which comes after a flashback showing how the gwanju used sorcery to protect Bu-yeon is played. As such, Mu-deok is firmly against the idea that would see her pupil lose everything, despite it being a way to counteract the Queen’s haste in taking the relic for herself. Showing a bit of humanity, the assistant Gwanju expresses his wish to have the Crown Prince saved before the fake Queen does anything, confident that she can wait given that everyone is too concerned with being on edge. Then, after a quick succession of scenes demonstrating that the body Naksu inherited is Bu-yeon’s, we return to the present.

This breaks the last straw for shaman Choi who then tries to take away the powers of the ice stone and kill everyone inside the barrier. He then tries to kill the queen who is in shaman Choi’s body but is unable to go against his daughter which makes him give up. In Gaema village, Jin Cho-yeon and Park Dang-gu have come to search for the real queen but they are shocked to find Jin Woo-tak there. While pointing the sword at Jang Uk she remembers the words of Jin Bu-yeon and gives up on getting her powers back. At the training centre, Park Jin reveals that master Seo Gyeong had used the ice stone to save his lover but she chose to destroy it instead of using it. Jin Woo-tak is suspicious that Jang Kang must be her father as he used the ice stone to save her but doesn’t resent her.

The assistant Gwanju wants to strike a mutual defense agreement, declaring that he will remove Jang Uk, the true owner of the King's Star, in exchange for his life being spared. First, it turns out to be a grateful rejection of the master-pupil relationship. With the royal hearing, the Crown Prince is shown to the King's Star engraving. With that being said, the former assassin softens when it's revealed that part of this scheme is to assist Seo Yul. The King believes it would be unfair to hold Jang Uk accountable since he stated Uk was not his son. Woo-tak is unable to defend himself, launching a battle of will between the three parties. Showing a bit of humanity, the assistant Gwanju expresses his desire to have the Crown Prince saved before the fake Queen does anything. The members of the group within the barrier speculate that Jang Uk and Mu-deok have died, and the Crown Prince is concerned that everyone else will too. Before we return to the end of the last episode, Songrim's leader is equipped to stand his ground. As he watches the true Queen suffer, the bitter Woo-tak once again condemns Jang Gang for what he did, blaming him for everything that he did. Then, after a quick succession of scenes demonstrating that Bu-yeon's body is returned, we return to the past. Later on, we learn that Bu-yeon's powers came not only from her mother, but also from her father, who was a "descendant of the fallen Choi family."
Ahead of the Alchemy of Souls part 1 finale later today, a 10-episode season 2 has just been reported to release in December 2022.
Part 1 first aired on June 18, and ends with episode 20 on the 28th. I’m sure I’m missing some relevant cultural context, but I find this series, through the first eight available episodes, thoroughly enjoyable, a needed escape. Part 2 will be aired in the second half of the year. “Reminiscent of the k-drama Crash Landing on You, in that it’s a love story with charming and very competent actors. “There are so many changes and variations in our narrative, so I thought I wanted to put a human story in it. I didn’t have time to do fun with the tiki-taka.” It was more difficult than I thought to put the narrative and relationship story in 20 parts, so I made the decision early on.” – Park Joon-hwa, via “[Alchemy of Souls] is divided into Part 1 and Part 2 to be broadcast.
