Pre-Match Briefing: Chelsea vs Leicester (Chelsea FC)

The Blues are back in town for our second home league game of the season, and here club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton focus on ...

One of the illustrious pair has contested each of the last five finals and in 2019 both were involved, the Citizens scooping the pot after a penalty shootout. Group E is an auspicious one: the path to both our wins in Europe’s elite competition began with that letter in the group stage. The first transfer window of the Boehly/Clearlake era at Stamford Bridge will close at 11pm on Thursday, with squad trading next allowed in four months’ time. With 10 changes to the line-up (Barnes retaining his place), they were masters of possession but inexpert on xG, the Europa League side progressing after a penalty shootout. That overhaul instantly inspired the Blues to a second-place finish. At home to Southampton last weekend the Foxes started with fluid possession, but created no chances beyond the James Maddison set-play that opened the scoring – a sixth goal in seven games for the high-performing midfielder, who is a doubt for Saturday. That squad would occupy our lowest ever rung on the league ladder: 18th in Division Two. Any weakening in defence is a blow to the Blues, who have conceded exactly twice as many goals (34) over the second half of the Bavarian’s 60 league games in charge as the first 30 (17). A change of rules allows Premier League coaches to make five in-game substitutions this season and Thomas Tuchel has acted accordingly, using 13 of a possible 15. For the fourth time in 12 Foxes' visits the final score was 1-1, though the Blues have actually won two and drawn the other of our past three league meetings with Brendan Rodgers’ side. Brendan Rodgers, a successful youth team manager at Cobham, is a brooding presence on the sidelines as Leicester await their first three points of the season. Kova’s reintroduction could be at the expense of Ruben Loftus-Cheek or Conor Gallagher.

Havertz dropped, James choice - Three changes Thomas Tuchel ... (Football.London)

Chelsea welcome Leicester City to Stamford Bridge for their fourth Premier League match of the season.

With Tuchel appreciating Sterling's qualities in the centre of a front three, perhaps it is time to provide a more natural winger an opportunity to get engaged in the match where Havertz has struggled. Sterling has perhaps looked the most threatening and provides the ability to beat a player that Chelsea have lacked in recent times, but all three players appeared unable to get into the game against Leeds. The former Wigan loanee has proved to be one of Chelsea's chief attacking threats, and while the Blues are yet to land Fofana, the options of Trevoh Chalobah and Cesar Azpilicueta remain to be used within a back three. This has nothing to do with pressing, running fewer kilometres, nothing to do with the style of Leeds. Full credit to Tuchel, utilising Reece James and Ruben Loftus-Cheek on the right of a back three and at wing-back worked perfectly against Spurs. The German coach was defensive of his side's performance in defence to Leeds but some issues are impossible to ignore, particularly because the 48-year-old did not appear to give the Elland Road side's performance a great deal of credit.

Chelsea's Predicted XI Vs Leicester City | Premier League (Sports Illustrated)

Here is the Chelsea starting XI that we believe will take to the field against the Foxes at Stamford Bridge.

His ability to beat the press and squeeze out of tight spaces on the ball is something very few players can do and for this reason, he has to come straight back into the starting XI. He has to start every game for Chelsea and it is not up for debate. Despite his shakiness under pressure, he keeps the game ticking when in possession which is crucial for the team. In a team that played one of the worst performances under Thomas Tuchel last Sunday, he was arguably the only one that could keep his head held high. - so he remains between the sticks in the hope he can erase that error last weekend from his mind. I would have considered Chalobah in this position but having not played a minute so far this season, it feels like quite a big risk to put him in. Had a really nice goal ruled out for offside last weekend and has shown that direct quality that has been missing from this Chelsea team for too long. Would Tuchel rather start Christian Pulisic or Kai Havertz did not have a good game last weekend and Broja has shown in a couple of cameo appearances off the bench what he can offer, so give the German forward a rest and start Broja so he can show Chelsea fans why there are talks that the Albanian is ready to sign a new deal with the club. He plays like he's still 25 and isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Cucurella can play in a back three and with how he's started the season with his new team, he deserves a chance to show what he can do in a centre back role. This wasn't an easy choice.

Kai Havertz dropped, Ben Chilwell return – Predicted Chelsea XI for ... (Football.London)

Chelsea will be determined to return to winning ways on Saturday afternoon but they face a tough test against Leicester City and the Blues are without some ...

Loftus-Cheek settled into the midfield well in the second period of last weekend's defeat and may have done enough to secure his place. Please, just for the fun and joy of this sport, do it. Perhaps this offers the Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz their last chance to find a goal before the season's schedule picks up and rotation becomes common place. Conor Gallagher and Jorginho flattered to deceive against Leeds, and while the latter is likely to keep his place, the former could well drop out of the side. The Foxes are unlikely to bring the same pressing intensity as Leeds but even with With Jamie Vardy in the opposition side, Trevoh Chalobah should come in for his first minutes of the season which then leaves the question of Cesar Azpilicueta or Marc Cucurella taking up the other spot. The Albania international hasn't had a pre-season so will not be fully up to speed but deserves a chance to step in for Kai Havertz. I would continue with Edouard Mendy despite his mistake against Leeds last weekend – and the only guarantee in the backline is Thiago Silva. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who really impressed in the right wing-back role against Tottenham recently, is an option to come in and replace Gallagher. Thomas Tuchel's side were outclassed at Elland Road and the Chelsea head coach understandably cut a frustrated figure after the match. Chelsea, though, will have to get back to winning ways without N'Golo Kante, who will be out for four weeks, as Tuchel confirmed on Friday. Tuchel is looking for an instant response from his Chelsea side after a disjointed performance in Yorkshire.

We simulated Chelsea vs Leicester City to get a score prediction ... (Football.London)

Chelsea host Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, so we simulated the clash to try and predict the score.

A frustrating afternoon for Chelsea as defensive errors kept the visitors in the game, but Kai Havertz eventually found the winning goal with eight minutes to go. Chelsea continued to push for another goal as they looked to reclaim the lead, and they did so on 70 minutes, with Mason Mount scoring in spectacular fashion. With a sight of goal, the forward curled a brilliant effort into the far corner, securing all three points for Tuchel's side. Leicester found the equaliser just minutes later though, with a lapse in concentration from Thiago Silva gifting the Foxes a goal. To complete this simulation, we used FIFA 22 and updated the squads with the latest transfers. The red card for Koulibaly means that he will be missing from the Blues' clash with Leicester City this weekend, leaving Tuchel with limited defensive options.

Chelsea vs Leicester City predicted XI: Personnel changes in 3-5-2? (The Pride of London)

Chelsea hosts Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday, here is who we think Thomas Tuchel will name to his starting XI.

To say that James is not a centerback is an understatement, but many fans seem to be smitten by the idea. He’s 22-years-old, and as a centerback, he still has up to three years before he reaches his prime. The “Reece James as a centerback” experiment should be coming to a close soon. To suggest that the No. Recall that Kepa Arrizabalaga started the FA Cup final in the 2020/21 season and conceded a long shot to Youri Tielemans. Tuchel now needs to show that he has at least learnt some lessons from that disappointing outing and take a full three points at home this weekend.

In between, they got hammered by Premier League champions Arsenal (wait, they don’t give out the trophy after three games?!). Leicester squeaked out a first win of the season midweek in the League Cup, needing penalties to advance past the team third from the bottom (89th of 92) in the English Football League pyramid. Fortunately, everyone (including Mateo Kovačić) should be available for at least some bench duty other than N’Golo Kanté — though he’s obviously a big loss. Future Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has been ruled out until the end of his Foxes career, which should be this weekend. The footballing diarrhea that we witnessed last weekend will have hopefully exited our system for good and with appropriately violent force — sorry, been dealing with a bit of gastroenteritis (I think?) here today — and now we can get on the steady road to recovery. No, we definitely cannot afford any form of rest, as the schedule picks up in frequency now.

With Leicester's defence weakened and fragile this season - they have conceded eight goals, more than any other club in the league - this is the perfect opportunity to open his account at Stamford Bridge. Four games to brush their poor start under the carpet and can regroup properly before their trip to Crystal Palace in October. The hosts started the season brightly with a 1-0 revenge win at Goodison Park against Everton after last season's defeat but have not made positive steps after that. Tuchel have won two of their last three league matches against Leicester after a six-match winless run against the visitors. Thomas Tuchel is aiming for his first win at Stamford Bridge this season against a Leicester side who have made a slow start to the season.

Today is his chance to show this and usually we can always rely on him to perform. Last year he came into the side as somewhat of an underdog, the challenger trying to break into the side because nobody knew too much of what he could offer. Leicester have already conceded the most in the Premier League so far with eight goals, only being kept off the bottom by their single point on the opening weekend against Brentford. Thomas Tuchel needs a quick response from his players following last Sunday's horror show at Elland Road, whilst Brendan Rodgers needs to lift the ever souring mood at the King Power amid a challenging summer.
