Andrew Tate Has Finally Been Banned From TikTok (The Cut)

Andrew Tate has been banned from social-media apps TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, the companies announced this week. In 2017, he was banned from Twitter ...

[partially motivated](https://www.indy100.com/celebrities/andrew-tate-most-controversial-moments-2657868947) by his assumption that police there are less likely to pursue sexual-assault allegations. [a video surfaced](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/19501369/what-happened-when-andrew-tate-was-on-big-brother/) of him hitting a woman with a belt. A spokesperson for TikTok told the Post, “Our investigation into this content is ongoing, and we continue to remove violative accounts and videos that promote misogyny and other hateful behavior.” Tate has been banned from [Facebook and Instagram](https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/viral/andrew-tate-facebook-instagram-ban-meta-rcna43998) for violating Meta’s [policy on “dangerous individuals and organizations.”](https://transparency.fb.com/en-gb/policies/community-standards/dangerous-individuals-organizations/) [Hope Not Hate](https://hopenothate.org.uk/2022/08/19/act-andrew-tate/) and [White Ribbon](https://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/national/uk-today/20609399.andrew-tate-big-brother-white-ribbon-calls-tiktok-remove-kickboxer-platform/) have called for his social accounts to be banned, and influencers shared [infographics arguing his removal](https://www.instagram.com/p/ChA8mOSpiKF/) and [guides for how teachers can talk to their students about Tate](http://instagram.com/p/ChK9vZUseYy/). He runs [Hustler’s University](https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/aug/20/andrew-tate-money-making-scheme-for-fans-of-extreme-misogynist-closes), which is described as “an online money-focused community providing education and coaching to over 100,000 students” on its website. Tate has been [banned from Twitter since 2017](https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/twitter-andrew-tate-raped-verify-kickboxer-b1996239.html), after he tweeted, in response to sexual-assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, “If you put yourself in a position to be raped, you must [bear] some responsibility.” Yet banning Tate might not be enough to stop his influence; the Post points out that many of his videos have been posted by fan accounts. [women are the property of men](https://www.tiktok.com/@bffspod/video/7119994052824599851?amp%3Bis_from_webapp=v1&%3Bq=bffs%20pod%20andrew%20tate&%3Bt=1661188702236&is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1&item_id=7119994052824599851). Videos of Tate’s [most controversial statements](https://www.insider.com/andrew-tate-tiktok-hustlers-university-misogyny-women-comments-mens-rights-2022-8) — including going into detail about acting violently against women, comparing them to property or animals, and supporting rape — have been watched on TikTok 11.6 billion times; before he was banned, he had 4.7 million followers on Instagram. Andrew Tate — known by his fans as “the king of toxic masculinity” — [has finally been banned](https://www.npr.org/2022/08/20/1118624860/andrew-tate-facebook-instagram-banned) from [TikTok](https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/08/21/andrew-tate-tiktok-instagram/) for violating [its policy](https://www.tiktok.com/community-guidelines?lang=en#38) barring “content that attacks, threatens, incites violence against, or otherwise dehumanizes an individual or a group,” the company told the Washington Post. (The two later said his actions had been consensual.) These days, Tate, 35, is best known as an incel self-help guru behind a shocking amount of blatantly misogynistic content, which he [encourages his army of angry male subscribers to share widely online](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/aug/06/andrew-tate-violent-misogynistic-world-of-tiktok-new-star). You won’t be surprised to learn that his hatred is not reserved solely for women; there are plenty of videos in which Tate makes racist, homophobic, transphobic, fatphobic, and classist remarks.

Despite TikTok's ban, Andrew Tate content is all over the platform (INSIDER)

The influencer Andrew Tate's TikTok account was banned on Friday, but many fan pages sharing his content are still online as of Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the most popular Tate clips on the platform have been uploaded by fan channels like "tateprof" (86,000 followers) and "atate_clips_" (106,000 followers), both of which as of Monday afternoon remain on the platform after Tate's ban. "That's why we are still calling for the removal of all Andrew Tate content." Alexander Reid Ross, a Portland State University instructor who has researched far-right groups, previously told Insider that Tate's rapid rise may have inspired other fringe figures who want to get in on the "Tate phenomenon" and grow their audiences. A number of organizations, including women's rights and anti-extremism groups, had in recent weeks called on TikTok to take action against Tate's content. A search for "andrewtate" on TikTok brought up at least 20 fan accounts with over 10,000 followers each dedicated to spreading Tate videos. But the ban didn't address the primary source of Tate-related content on the platform — the network of popular Tate fanpages spreading his clips and garnering millions of views that helped catapult him into ubiquity this year.

Young men's dating woes attract them to online misogynists, who then convert them to authoritarianism.

It can be intoxicating for young men trying to navigate the confusing and scary world that is often full of rejection. Beyond arguing that women shouldn't be allowed to drive or work outside of the home, Tate has [bragged about beating a woman with a machete](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/aug/06/andrew-tate-violent-misogynistic-world-of-tiktok-new-star) and [praised Donald Trump for sexually assaulting women](https://www.marieclaire.com.au/andrew-tate-tiktok-dangerous). Doubly so when the message they're getting is that the solution isn't to do hard, personal work to make yourself a better catch, but instead to become angry and aggrieved at women for wanting a better deal for themselves. Until his social media ban, [Tate was operating something called Hustler University](https://news.yahoo.com/andrew-tate-closed-hustlers-university-065921685.html), which promised, for $49 a month, to turn his audience into rich playboys, as he presents himself to be. But once in the door, the young male audiences aren't just hit with sexist content, but drawn into a larger world of far-right bigotry and, in many cases, anti-democratic sentiment. Until the grown-ups got involved and shut it all down, Tate was a cash cow for TikTok, [garnering over 12 billion views](https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/viral/internet-cant-stop-talking-andrew-tate-tiktok-rcna42744) for his videos peddling misogyny so vitriolic that one almost has to wonder if he's joking. He's been linked with a number of far-right American and British influencers, and not just because he loves Trump. One way for men to respond to this, which many do, is to embrace a more egalitarian worldview and become the partners women desire. For adults who don't have teenage sons, the 35-year-old kickboxer-turned-TikTok star was largely unknown, but as anyone in the high school and college age set could tell you, online he was an overnight sensation.

"This ban is the hard reset I needed to tell the truth, for that I’m thankful. Teachers like me know today's boys are easy targets for Andrew Tate (New Statesman)

Tate's validation is too alluring to ignore when you're rejected by society and economically handicapped.

When the state fails to provide support, when adults are so absorbed in trying to live hand to mouth, when opportunities for social mobility are shattered,Tate offers a dangerous hand for them to cling on to. As a secondary school teacher, I’m worried about what this could mean for a whole generation of boys who are soaking up and normalising these abhorrent views – and what it means for the girls and women who are subject to these attitudes. Yes, parents have a responsibility for what their child has access to online, but the reality is that young people spend more time at school than they do at home.
