Home Ground Heroes: Tommy Barnett (Watford FC)

With the 2022 centenary of Watford's move to Vicarage Road approaching, writers from The Watford Treasury magazine look back at players who performed great ...

The fact that Tommy Barnett’s 88th-minute goal broke the club’s league goalscoring record seems to have gone unrecognised at the time. The dramatic goal spell unfolded in the last five minutes, with Watford netting three in three minutes as reported breathlessly by the Observer: The game was evidently relatively unenergetic until a late twist: ‘Until the last few minutes there was nothing in the match to fetch one out of the apathy the heat engendered. Just two years after Watford finished second-bottom and had to re-apply for their place in the Football League, Tommy’s league tally of 12 in his debut season helped the club reach the giddy heights of eighth; his profile was done no harm by a further five FA Cup goals. The Watford Observer felt the day’s gate of nearly 8,000 was ‘satisfactory’ considering the ‘oppressive heat and the threat of a thunderstorm’. Signed from Manchester United in the 1928 close season, Tommy Barnett made his debut at home to Gillingham that September.

FA WNL Southern Premier Division: Watford's 2022/23 Opponents ... (Watford FC)

It's an exciting time at the moment with the beginning of the new campaign now only a few days away.

Evie Gane, who dual-signed with Watford in January, has also agreed to stay on the South Coast. After being relegated from this level in 2015/16, Argyle to this day will still be scratching their heads at how they didn’t return at the first attempt. While usually better than the teams below them, they’ve not had quite enough to make that extra push towards the top end. With several departures, the next season was a real struggle, as the team lost all seven games before the pandemic intervened again. No Watford fans will be forgetting that 5-4 win at Home Park in a hurry, with both teams putting on a fantastic display. As you would expect though with their location, there hasn’t been too much turnover with the squad. Shannon Albuery and Cherelle Khassel were both prolific scorers, while Tamsin De Bunsen was very much the provider. While there’s no doubt that Lumsden will be a big miss, the U’s have managed to recruit well so far this summer in other positions. The long serving centre-back Katie Middleton, who also donned the gloves on the odd occasion, retired this summer. There have also been additions to the backline. They were awarded a licence for the newly formed FA WSL 2 and finished ninth in the inaugural 2014 season. Remarkably, the draw between the two was the only time the U’s dropped points at home all season.

The 24-year-old is yet to make a single appearance for the English side this season. | Pulse Nigeria.

The Nigerian international only played a full match once last season in a 5-1 loss to Leicester City. Kalu joined Watford in January from Bordeaux for €3.00m, but the Nigerian has struggled so far at the club. Maduka Okoye, who joined the club this summer, is yet to play a game for the Hornets, while William Troost-Ekong has only made a late substitute appearance.
