Autonomous? Nope. California moves against Tesla's 'full self ... (WRAL Tech Wire)

The California DMV has become the first US government entity to formally move against the naming of "full self-driving." Here's what's happening.

Tesla claimed in 2016 that all its new vehicles had the hardware capability for “full self-driving,” and it would soon offer complementary software for the cars to drive themselves. Waymo began referring to its robotaxis as “fully autonomous.” Waymo, which operates robotaxis in the Phoenix area, does not need a human in the driver’s seat to ensure safe operation. “Full self-driving” is [even designed to be at its best](https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1430394007465730048?lang=en) in California’s San Francisco Bay Area. It then [sold its ](https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/07/cars/uber-sells-self-driving/index.html)robotaxi business in 2020.) A German court ruled in 2020 that Tesla’s language was misleading, which the automaker appealed last year. Tesla has long qualified the limits of its systems with disclaimers. But there are strong signs in the last year that NHTSA is shifting some of its attention to driver-assist technologies. The DMV revoked Uber’s vehicles’ registrations in response, and Uber pulled its cars from San Francisco streets. The California DMV has become the first US government entity to formally move against the naming of “full self-driving.” Most people are there to fill out forms and pay fees for various bureaucratic duties that the agency undertakes. [exempted](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-exempts-self-driving-vehicles-some-crash-standards-2021-01-14/) some robotaxis from its safety standards, and [described](https://www.transportation.gov/sites/dot.gov/files/2020-02/EnsuringAmericanLeadershipAVTech4.pdf) many potential benefits of these technologies, including improved quality of life, safer roads, shorter commutes, lower energy usage and more access to jobs. But NHTSA and Congress have spent recent years swept away in the excitement and lobbying surrounding a more eye-catching technology — fully autonomous vehicles.

Tesla's "full self-driving" (FSD) may have to come to a full stop because the California DMV isn't a fan of the feature's misleading marketing.

Tesla will give the NHTSA access to FSD Beta (Teslarati)

Tesla will give the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) access to FSD Beta, according to a recent tweet from Elon Musk.

With Tesla granting the NHTSA access to FSD Beta, the agency will most likely do testing of its own. In O’Dowd’s videos, the screen is hard to see and you can see some type of error message as the driver refuses to disengage. Some of the most impressive stuff is just when I’m driving down the road at 45 miles an hour and there’s a car that will turn in front of me to get into a parking lot. A father who loves his child would quickly take over and brake if the software were to refuse to stop. Elon responded to a tweet from @WholeMarsBlog who pointed out that even the NHTSA was complaining about having to participate in the safety score process that all of Tesla’s FSD Beta testers have to do. Just some of the predictions it’s got and the capabilities to understand when things are getting in their path.
