Real Madrid have a chance to do a European double tonight when they lock horns against Europa League champions from the 2022/23 season Eintracht Frankfurt.

He had dribbles which were not aided by the lack of runners in the team. After a relatively quiet first half, Benzema imposed himself in the second period and even got a goal of his own. Bar that, he did get an assist and rattled the crossbar in the second half. We use cookies on our website to give you the most relevant experience by remembering your preferences and repeat visits. Casemiro was the best performer on the night. Unlike the Champions League final, he was relatively undisturbed, only coming in to keep out a handful of attempts from the reigning Europa League winners. His movements off the ball helped to create some goalscoring opportunities for Los Merengues, and defensively he was decent. Kroos had one of his best performances of the year. Inspired by David Alaba and Karim Benzema, Madrid clinched the first trophy of the new season in a 2-0 victory. After the half-hour mark, his positioning improved, and the chances awarded to the Germans naturally decreased. Toni Kroos and Luka Modric complete the Bermuda Triangle in the middle of the park. Thibaut Courtois starts in goal for Los Blancos, while David Alaba and Eder Militao guard him as the centre-backs.

Super Cup victory over Eintracht Frankfurt shows that Real Madrid ... (Eurosport.com)

Carlo Ancelotti sent out the team that won the Champions League, and once again they came back with the trophy. It's a simple game when you're this good.

A reminder that this is all being made up as we go along; a reiteration of contempt for the poor suckers who actually try to watch this stuff. Though "feud" doesn't quite do it justice: this was a clash of personalities, of styles, and of generations. And this particular tradition, of the hosts playing the opening game, has been an important part of the World Cup since… Indeed, FIFA boasted that "Given the compact nature of Qatar, event organisers were able to assign, for the first time ever, group stage games to a stadium and kick-off time for each matchday after the final draw, optimising the match schedule for the benefit and comfort of spectators, teams, media and the global audience". The schedule for Qatar 2022 was set in July 2020 and the confirmed in April of this year, following the draw for the group stages. This is a club, after, that is selling off the future to pay for the past; that is returning over and over to its players and asking them to renegotiate their contracts; and that certainly seems to be conducting an unpleasant propaganda war with any player not willing to fall in line. But a failure here would be a failure of this regime. The idea of Barcelona is such a strong and persistent one that it overrides common sense. Even before we get onto the particular ethical quandaries surrounding Qatar, a trip to a World Cup is, by all sensible rules of holiday-making, a silly thing to do with your time and money. We have a vacancy that might be of interest…" A closer contest for Frankfurt, and a narrative-laden festival of Mourinhology for Madrid. Just Antonio Rudiger, one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and Aurelien Tchouameni, one of the most coveted young midfielders in the world.

Benzema’s goal came in the 65th minute, after a pass from Vinicius which he side-footed past Trapp and there was no way back for a willing, but ultimately, toothless Eintracht. The Eintracht keeper will have been frustrated when David Alaba tapped home from the resulting corner after headers from Benzema and Casemiro had left the Eintracht defense all at sea. The Frenchman netted his side’s second goal of the match to lift his total number of goals for Real Madrid to 324, taking him past Raul Gonzalez to become the second highest scorer in the club’s history behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

Real Madrid defeat Eintracht Frankfurt to win fifth UEFA Super Cup (Guardian)

Goals from David Alaba and Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt and a fifth UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

We want to pick up where we left off last season,” Alaba told RTL. The match also highlighted the growing gap between the Champions League and Europa League competitions, with Madrid being the ninth Champions League team to win the competition in the past 10 years. I believe it can help us achieve better results and winning helps motivate the players.” The clash, in Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium, was the first time these two sides had met in a European decider since 1960, when Madrid dismantled Frankfurt 7-3 through four goals to Ferenc Puskas and three to Alfredo di Stefano in the European Cup final. Frankfurt fought hard in the closing stages but Madrid was able to dominate the game to win their fifth Super Cup from eight attempts. After the goal, Madrid stepped it up a gear and should have gone 2-0 up, with Benzema uncharacteristically dragging the ball wide with the goal begging in the 41st minute.

Taiwan yesterday outlasted the Dominican Republic 9-5 in a rain-soaked slugfest in Tainan to take home the bronze medal in the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup. Taiwan, who won the previous edition of the tournament in 2019, were eliminated from gold medal contention on Friday with a loss to the US, and needed a comeback win over South Korea a day later to reach yesterday’s third-place playoff. The US and Venezuela were playing for gold in a game that started at 7:45pm. The US were leading 7-2 at the bottom of the fifth inning as of press time last night. Australia’s Donna Lobban said she and her Scottish husband Greg Lobban would not be signing “divorce papers” after she beat him in mixed doubles squash competition at the Commonwealth Games on Friday. Donna Lobban and her partner, Cameron Pilley, came back from a game down to win 9-11, 11-8, 11-8 and reach the semi-finals in Birmingham, England. The defending champion, 35, said she was braced for her husband’s reaction. He retired Willi Castro on what the scoreboard called a 40mph curveball, but Detroit’s Jonathan Schoop hit the next pitch for Erik ten Hag’s first competitive game as manager tomorrow should herald a fresh start for Manchester Untied, but familiar failings behind the scenes have made the Dutchman’s difficult job an almost impossible one. Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp produced a fine save to stop the next Vinícius Júnior effort in the 37th, but Madrid scored from the resultant corner when Benzema and Casemiro combined to give Alaba an easy finish. Benzema went close shortly afterward as Madrid ended the first half in the ascendancy, and Vinícius Júnior tested Trapp again early in the second. Alaba prodded the opener home from close range in the 37th minute when Casemiro cushioned Benzema's header back after a corner.

The ball was played from the centre circle to Éder Militão, who stopped it and left it for David Alaba to try to pick out one of the several runners in the right-hand side of the opposition half. It was only going to be a matter of time for the Frenchman to overtake the Spaniard and become the outright second top goalscorer in Real Madrid history. While it was Casemiro who won the MVP in this game, Courtois was decisive once more and it seems like he is ready for another stellar campaign. Remember in the friendly against Juventus when Real Madrid worked a really nice routine from the opening kick-off, which ended in a goal on 10 seconds from Benzema that was ruled out for an offside along the way? After goals from David Alaba and Karim Benzema saw Los Blancos defeat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup, it’s time for the first three answers and three questions piece of 2022/23. This is where we answer three of the pre-match doubts we had about Real Madrid and then pose three new questions resulting from the game. Once the starting XI was confirmed, thoughts turned to Antonio Rüdiger and Aurélien Tchouaméni and the matter of if and when they’d get off the bench.

Real Madrid began the 2022-23 in the same vein as they ended the previous one - by winning a European trophy. The UEFA Super Cup is often deemed as a ...

It was a typical performance from Casemiro. He was a defensive monster against the ball and frequently ventured forwards in the final third. His defensive acumen was on display, as Kroos made 9 recoveries in the game right in front of the defence. This final was no different, the French international had a goal but arguably could have had a brace for himself and was instrumental for Madrid in the final third of the pitch. In attack they managed to play a quick exchanges between the midfield and attack to exploit the space between Madrid’s lines. Japanese international, Daichi Kamada, managed to swoop in between the lines and attack the space between the midfield and defensive lines of Madrid to get the shots off. In the final third, the left bias of Benzema and Madrid’s attack in general was clearly visible. Karim Benzema has been the epitome of standout performers in games in the last few seasons, even when he’s not on the scoresheet. Their pressing was methodical and they were selective in jumping up to apply pressure managing to force Madrid towards the touchline and then engaging them. The Uruguayan was explosive as ever with his ball carries and was Madrid’s only route to create any danger from in the opening half hour. They guarded the central areas of the pitch really well, with their wingback and central midfielders showing good understanding to protect the space in behind them. They had lost one of their biggest threats in Filip Kostic coming into the game, so they had to compensate in some areas. They looked threatening on the transitions and managed to dominate territory over their opponent.
