Premier League returns: See the Nigerian players ready for action (Soccernet.ng)

Some Nigerian players - featured, yet-to-be featured and uninterested in featuring for the Super Eagles will be involved in Premier League action.

While he’s been given some playing time in the past, he will be looking to get more this time. Frank Onyeka had an average season last year and will hope to play more regularly this term and show his Danish manager what he’s made of. Wilfred Ndidi is expected to be back from his injury lay-off at the end of last season. Aribo scored a world beater last week and was the toast of the Saints fans as he skipped past Villarreal players with aplomb. In Dominic Solanke, Bournemouth have a player hungry to prove he can play at the highest level. Tosin has in the past rejected Super Eagles’ overtures and will hope to have a good season this time to earn his much-desired Three Lions shirt. Scott Parker is also marking his return to the Premier League as a manager just after one season out. He has shown glimpses of what he can offer the team during preseason. They will, however, try to get their season on to a flying start by defeating Patrick Vieira’s Palace who have shown steel and quality at home in the past. With senior players in the team and one of the most talented players in the squad, Wesley Fofana wanting out, Brendan Rodgers will work to get his team in the right state as they host the Bees. This time, he’s with the Cherries and will hope to see the brand of football he saw his team play in the Championship. He will be facing a possibly exciting Liverpool attack and is expected to be tested to the maximum.

Newcastle tried and failed to sign the player in January but finally got their man, and he should prove a notable upgrade within Eddie Howe’s defence. The 22-year-old is seen as one of the best talents to come out of South America in recent years – the forward was wanted by a number of clubs in Europe, including Barcelona – and although City Football Group has numerous options to send him on loan, Pep Guardiola wanted him to be part of his squad immediately. Tall and dominant in the air yet comfortable bringing the ball from defence, in the words of Howe, “he’s a presence”. JB Newcastle’s recruitment has instead targeted players who are taking a step up in heading to the Premier League and can share the journey to the top. He is left-footed and is the ideal man to play on the left side of a back three in Steve Cooper’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, all of which may well have been discussed when Niakhaté travelled to Greece in order to meet Cooper to discuss the project at the City Ground and how he would fit in before making the move to Nottingham. WU The 21-year-old is clever off the ball and can spot a gap in the defence in order to find valuable space in dangerous positions.

10 Players To Watch Out For In 2022-23 Premier League Season (The Sportsman)

He's had quite a pre-season with his new side, scoring seven goals in five matches and that has whet the appetite for his new supporters. Arsenal.

Wherever he is come September, he will certainly be an asset to either one of the two sides. With a new season here, and the fitness of star striker Patrick Bamford still in doubt, Gelhardt has a great opportunity to show Jesse Marsch why he deserves more minutes and can cement himself as the club’s number nine for years to come. With his keen eye for a pass, skill with the ball at his feet, there is certainly more to come from him this campaign and he will be pushing for more starts. The Brazilian midfielder was the star signing of Newcastle United’s first transfer window under their wealthy owners and went on to shine in his first few months in English football, scoring five goals and registering one assist. Given regular game time in either position will give him the platform to really make an impact at this level and right now, the Emirates Stadium seems like the right place for him to do just that. Despite Espanyol ultimately getting relegated to the Segunda Division, Roca boasted some of the best midfield stats in the top flight as he was tenacious in the middle of the field.

Premier League: 10 things to look out for on the opening weekend (The Guardian)

Arsenal look to avoid another opening-day stinker, Everton look toothless and will Jürgen Klopp start Darwin Núñez?

This has been a difficult summer for Leicester. Kasper Schmeichel has left, the futures of Wesley Fofana and James Maddison are up in the air, and the Foxes are the only Premier League club yet to sign a player. A club close to qualifying for the Champions League in 2020 and 2021 found last season did not go entirely to plan, with Brendan Rodgers’ side finishing eighth, six points off a Europa League place. A lot of it is centred around the incisiveness of Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio on the counter, and while West Ham looked short of creativity during pre-season that is likely to be less of a problem against City. After all, David Moyes will not be making plans for his team to dominate possession. The Portuguese’s decision to go awol was surely premeditated as a latest ploy in the push to leave a club there is supposedly adoration for. Erik ten Hag’s first Manchester United XI for a Premier League game is not expected to include Cristiano Ronaldo due to the wantaway striker’s lack of match-fitness. After hosting Aston Villa, Bournemouth next travel to Manchester City before facing Arsenal at home and Liverpool at Anfield. A point at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday may be necessary to avoid the ominous prospect of losing their first four league games and seeing their survival hopes potentially begin to wash away along the south coast by the end of August. Villa fans will be expecting greater things than last season’s 14th place, and if Steven Gerrard’s players are intent on making large strides up the table, picking up three points in games like this should be a must in their hunt for a first top-half finish since promotion in 2019. Conte’s system is based on getting the best out of his front men, and Kane intends to embrace the expectations. When he was denied his wish, he laboured, scoring only one league goal before the middle of December. He rediscovered his groove under Conte, who joined at the start of November, to finish with 17 in the competition and he carries momentum into the opening game against Southampton, having had a proper pre-season this time. Instead the 30-year-old has made it crystal clear he intends to be playing the first-team football that will all but guarantee him a place on England’s World Cup bound flight to Doha in November. Accordingly the consensus is that Howe will start Pope ahead of Dubravka on Saturday. That, in turn, is set to upset the Slovakia goalkeeper and his agent, who has reiterated that his client is too good to be anyone’s understudy. If pre-season is a time for optimism, it has been particularly pronounced at Tottenham. First Antonio Conte committed to the project, then the club made quick and targeted signings. The goalscorer is gone, the England international is out injured for the next six weeks and Rondón is suspended. The Uruguay forward started on the bench when Liverpool beat City in the Community Shield last weekend, but he appeared to be on the same wavelength as his new teammates after coming on in the second half.

The Reds have thrown financial caution to the wind to become one of the summer’s big spenders in a bid to retain their Premier League status going into next season. Preparation in terms of transfers for the new season has been ad hoc, with The Cherries waiting until August to pay a fee for anyone. After a massive overhaul in 2018 and a host of loans in Fulham's 2020 premiership season backfired, Silva will hope a mixture of the old and the new can keep his side out of the bottom three. The Cottagers and The Cherries have both been regulars in the Premier League in recent years, with Fulham known as a “yo-yo” club from the way they constantly go up and down between the divisions. Having had time to blood his team through a year in the Championship and having brought in defensive reinforcements, he will be hoping he can finally make Fulham’s status as a first division team stick. Fulham and Bournemouth are back in the big time after securing the automatic promotion spots in the Championship last season.

Premier League predictions: Mirror Football pick champions, top four ... (Mirror.co.uk)

The new Premier League season is upon us, and we asked our wide team of writers, reporters and editors just what they think will happen at home and abroad.

It will be City in a canter and I suspect they might break that Champions League jinx for good measure. Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United will all be stronger, but still short of winning the title. Manchester City won the Premier League title last season, but to finish with just one trophy the campaign was seen as somewhat of a disappointment. The Dutchman needed the chance to completely remould a squad that slumped to United's worst-ever finish in the Premier League era last year; the three new recruits United have currently sourced will not cut it. I do fancy them to win a trophy though and they should retain their Champions League berth. The top four race looks tight with Arsenal much-improved and Manchester United entering a new era. Tottenham look strong under Antonio Conte but I struggle to see them keeping pace with City and Liverpool for a whole season. Manchester City look formidable - the only question mark is how their squad copes after returning from the World Cup. But with the depth they have available, it’s hard to see it being a major issue. While 99 goals last season was ridiculous, Haaland will lift Pep Guardiola's side to a new level and that's why they'll win the Premier League and Champions League. I've backed Manchester City to win another domestic treble. Manchester City have won four of the last five Premier League trophies and their dominance is showing no signs of waning. As far as the cups go, Arsenal are surely due an FA Cup after missing out for two whole seasons.

Premier League predictions 2022-23: Tottenham to rule London but ... (Evening Standard)

The Premier League is back and starting a week earlier than usual due to the mid-season disruption caused by the inaugural World Cup in Qatar.

DK: Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brentford, Fulham. Spurs are well-placed to push on and Chelsea still boast impressive squad depth, despite being in transition. MO: Liverpool, City, Tottenham, Arsenal. I’d be pretty confident on the top three. DK: A multi-team title race. I do think Arsenal will have a better chance of disrupting it than Manchester United. Chelsea could sneak into the top four. It’s possible but they’ll have enough to stay up. Will Brentford suffer second-season syndrome? NK: A visit to the City Ground. It will be raucous after 23 years away from the top-flight. Perhaps it is wishful thinking but a mid-season World Cup could shake up the established order in the second half of the campaign and create a three-or four-team title race. The signing of the season will be... SC: City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal. The top two are a cut above the rest, but the battle for third and fourth will be close. There doesn’t appear to be much to separate a chasing pack that includes the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, while another new era begins under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. Fulham and Bournemouth have both made swift returns to the top-flight, while Nottingham Forest are back at this level for the first time in 23 long years.

It is also worth betting on an Erling Haaland debut goal at 1.75 odds. Over 2.5 goals have been set at 1.74 odds and the safer over 1.5 goals option is available at 1.21 odds. Safer options include over 1.5 goals at 1.28 odds and over 0.5 goals for Leeds at 1.26 odds and for Wolves at 1.35 odds. This fixture traditionally produces goals, 18 of the 22 games they’ve played since Southampton returned to the top flight in 2012 have ended with both teams scoring which is why GG in this game makes sense at 1.80 odds or try the over 2.5 goals market at 1.58 odds. Both matches between these two teams ended in 2-1 wins for Leicester City which is an indication to bet on goals in this one, with GG at 1.71 odds. Betting on goals could also be a good idea here, four of the last five games between them have ended in a 2-1 scoreline for either side which is why over 2.5 goals at 1.97 is worth a punt or you could take the safer option of over 1.5 at 1.31 odds. Chelsea to score the first goal at 1.50 odds looks a decent option or you can bet on the away team to have more corner kicks than Everton at 1.34 odds. Newly-promoted Bournemouth will host Aston Villa on Saturday and betting on the away team is the way to go as they are valued at 2.10 odds for a win while the double chance option on Aston Villa is available for 1.27 odds. Over 2.5 goals at 1.49 odds is a decent option as well but for the brave punters; you can try the first half over 1.5 goals option at 2.13 odds and Mohamed Salah to score at any time in this game is valued at 1.90 odds which is more than likely because the Egyptian has scored in five consecutive opening day fixtures. Safer bets like Newcastle win or draw & under 4.5 at 1.26 odds or a simple over 1.5 goals market at 1.31 odds. It is safer to stake on goals with both teams to score valued at 1.78 odds which is possible because eight of the last 10 games between these two have ended with both teams scoring. Other good bets include over 2.5 goals at 1.94 odds and the much safer over 1.5 goals market at 1.29 odds.

Picking out five players with the low FLP ownership and the potential to score big on the opening Gameweek.

A repeat of that would be music to the ears of the 1.2% of FPL players who have him in their squads. That was the third time in that sequence they have conceded three and Solanke could be just the man to profit. Prior to the injury, he amassed 101 points in the 2020/21 campaign, averaging 4.4 points per match over his 23 outings. Last season was pretty much a write-off for the forward who made just nine appearances as he struggled with a series of injuries. But for all the hours of deliberation, Gameweek 1 is about not losing ground early on. With Mohamed Salah in close to 60% of squads, Trent Alexander-Arnold in just over 58% and Erling Haaland in around 47%, the big-hitters have already been earmarked.

Premier League 2022/23 predictions: Champions, top four ... (The Independent)

Manchester City defend the title, while Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest are back in the top flight.

Is Joelinton going to win player of the year? AP: Kevin De Bruyne. He’s been the best player in one of the best Premier League teams of all time, and it feels like he’s still not quite getting enough credit for that – somehow. More seriously, how teams like Brentford or Wolves look to potentially switch systems and still progress, and also how Steve Cooper – an England youth World Cup-winning manager, long touted as a top coach – fares in the top flight. MC: Kevin De Bruyne. Recovered from the signs of age, injury and fatigue to decide the title race last season. I’d be curious as to the future of Ralph Hassenhuttl, for example, and it’s for that reason I’m going for Southampton, Everton and Bournemouth. KJ: Jesse Lingard. Much like his loan move to West Ham triggered a reaction, consistent minutes under Steve Cooper will see the ex-Man Utd playmaker as Forest’s focal point, both on the pitch and the terraces. KM: Kevin de Bruyne or Thiago Alcantara. One of the two midfield schemers will be the difference between tired draws and vital wins during a relentless season. Out of all the promoted teams, Bournemouth feel less well-equipped to cope with the jump up. A first full season of Antonio Conte should guarantee at least fourth for Tottenham. The last spot is harder to nail down. Chelsea’s mini-rebuild has left a lot of questions but you expect that in the end, Thomas Tuchel will have enough answers. JB: Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal. The signings of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus are smart buys that can help Mikel Arteta’s side take the next step. Karl Matchett: Liverpool. The attack is now a slightly smaller group, but all of a more even (read: higher) level of quality.

Premier League table: Our full 2022/23 prediction revealed (GiveMeSport)

20. Bournemouth · 19. Southampton · 18. Fulham · 17. Brentford · 16. Leeds United · 15. Nottingham Forest · 14. Everton · 13. Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In the interest of transparency, I’m actually an Arsenal fan, so it pains me to say that the Gunners will once again finish shy of the Champions League places. Rather, I see Mikel Arteta going from strength to strength and Gabriel Jesus living up to expectations. So why am I predicting them to improve this season? However, for as long as there’s a slight chance that I’ve pulled off a minor miracle and people will start asking me for the lottery numbers, it’s going to be fascinating to watch yet another year of the world’s best league. The reality of the situation is that the ‘big six’ is so strong that it’s very easy to miss out and I’m not actually predicting Arsenal to have a bad season. There is, after all, a world in which Palace could go down this season. But all isn’t as it seems. You heard it here first. The 2022/23 Premier League season has officially arrived! Look, I’m a fan of Bruno Lage and think he has a lot of potential to be a great Premier League coach for years to come, but my nose tells me that there’s a tough, tough season on the horizon at Molineux. One of my more rebellious shouts, it must be said, because everybody seems to have the Toffees locked in for a place in the Championship, but I’m here to tell you that they’re going to surprise people in 2022/23. I really, really, really wanted to predict Fulham to stay up because the fact that the Cottagers seem to be playing switcheroo with Norwich City every season is a worrying sign of the cavity forming between the Championship and Premier League.

2022/23 English Premier League kicks off Friday (Premium Times)

Man City and Liverpool look miles ahead of every other team while Spurs could be the surprise package.

A top-four finish in seven years is the goal, but they could also get closer to the top tour if the ball bounces their way throughout the season. Bournemouth appear to be certain candidates because they have not significantly strengthened their promotion-winning squad, whereas Forest have brought in 13 new players. West Ham United manager David Moyes signed Italy international Gianluca Scamacca to relieve Michail Antonio’s goal-scoring burden and kept the wanted Declan Rice. Tottenham added Fraser Forster, Djed Spence, Clement Lenglet, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, and Richarlison to their squad, thus are looking the most likely to challenge the top two. The Community Shield showed neither team will deviate from how they were tactically set up in previous seasons, and while Liverpool appeared ready for the new season, City showed some rawness. The English Premier League, the best ( or most monetised) league in the world, kicks off its 2022/23 season on Friday, August 5, 2022, with various permutations, expectations, and fears.
